Crimea has absolutely nothing to do with it. Crimea is almost 100% pro-Russian region, historically owned by Russia. Eastern Europe is an entirely different matter. In geopolitics, what matters are practical and realistic issues, usually in terms of hard power.
And the thing is that no one can beat Russia in a ground war in Eastern Europe, and no outside power wants to fight Russia in a ground war in Eastern Europe.
Which means that you can't avoid making deals with Russia in that region of the world, otherwise it will just end up like Crimea all over again.
I'm talking about the fact that, perhaps, the EU and even NATO expect some changes in the coming decades. And the states of Eastern Europe, in the situation of cultural expansion of alien elements from other regions of the world, will need to look for a strong ally that can ensure their safety.
Who can ensure the security or even survival of Eastern Europe in the world of the future? Russia and only Russia.
