Displaced persons from India- Bangladesh border stage a protest rally in Agartala

Hundreds of displaced persons from the India-Bangladesh border region in northeastern state of Tripura staged a rally at Agartala, the capital of Tripura to pressurise the state government to consider and implement their demands for apt rehabilitation.

The people were displaced due to the erection of barbed wire fencing along the Indo-Bangladesh border.

Subal Bhowmick, President of Simanta Bhumi Suraksha Committee (Committee for Protection of Soil in Border), said on Monday that the state government is least bothered about the problems of the displaced families.

"We are on hunger strike for past 13 days but no one from the state government has bothered to contact us. We have always run to the government but they have ignored us and tried to divert the angle of our problem by saying that it is a central (federal) government's concern." said Bhowmik.

Due to the India-Bangladesh barbed wire fencing, 8500 families lost their land, farms, ponds including places of worship like temple, mosques.heir entire belongings have gone to the other part of the barbed fence, said Bhowmik.

Further he noted that if the government continues to ignore their problems, then their agitation would take up a much unpleasant turn.

"Several people are joining in this protest in support of this for the 19th time of our demands. I strongly believe that all those who have been affected by the displacement at the border should be rehabilitated or else our agitation would take a more adverse turn," added Bhowmik.

Earlier on February 3, the protestors had launched a hunger strike to draw the attention of the state government.

The major demands of Simanta Bhumi Suraksha Committee (Committee for Protection of Soil in Border) include publication of names of the 8,500 displaced families, fencing along zero-Point to save the Indian soil, government employment for each affected family and allotment of alternative land for them.

Tripura shares 856 km long border with Bangladesh of which 675 km had been fenced to check illegal migrants, keep an eye on Indian insurgents fleeing to Bangladesh and also to keep a vigil over illegal trade and trans-border crime.

Similar fencing is also being erected all along the 4,095-km India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram.

There is no need for any sympathy for these demonstrators. In its populist political approach, the CPM encouraged and continues to encourage every kind of administrative irregularity that pleases a few individual voters and enables it to earn their favour, possibly extending to a vote during the next election. This has happened on the streets of Kolkata, on the farmlands carved out of reserved forest, riverbeds, prone to flooding, and in a few cases, on illegally occupied government land, with the government itself, under the influence of the party, winking at this action.

Once in a way there are highly-publicised clearances; these serve to preserve the party's official and coldly cynical line that the encroachments are the work of the ungovernable poor seeking a livelihood out of desperation. Not a word about the monies that have changed hands, the tacit encouragement from the party, the acquiescence of the police under the thumb of the party - nothing. Instead, the party gets an opportunity to weed out malcontents, those who flirt with other parties, those who do not pay up their periodic subscriptions on time, the lot, everyone who is not as equal as everyone else.

A close examination of the claims of these displaced people will yield surprising results. The fence is allowed within a certain distance from the actual border, not on the border itself. When it is erected yards within Indian soil, it is obvious that there will be buildings, usages and habitation. These fences are never erected without due diligence. When they uproot people, or disturb the daily lives of people, it is always accompanied by compensation from the state government concerned, except when commons land has been misused. Any cursory check will show that in most cases, compensation will have been offered, and the protestors are holding out for more, or that illegal structures, holdings or uses have been destroyed by the fence, and compensation is sought where it is not properly due.

Waste of time, moaning about them. But kudos to Kanna for trying his best to set off another flame war between Indians and Bangladeshis on this forum. A for effort. Better luck next time.

???

  • You leave your home at 10 in the morning and get to the spot, with pillows, reading material and electronic entertainment of choice.
  • You skip lunch.
  • You go home at 6 or 7, depending on what's running on TV.

What did you think? Silly boy!

 Haha i get that, but don't they eat at all? or do they consume liquid food? What about when they are out of public sight and cameras, surely you would be tempted to eat?

Anywho I was just curious, and as usual turned to wikipedia for answer . And what do you know, they even had information about hunger strikes.

Oh, the details, the logistics, is it? Wassup, planning to run one on the 'Roos? It would certainly impress them hugely, seeing as how they are probably the most obese people on the planet. But to return to your questions:

 Haha i get that, but don't they eat at all?

I'm SHOCKED at your question! out front, with everyone watching? On a hunger-strike, for Chrissake! Is nothing sacred? Must we be cynical and fllippant about everything?

or do they consume liquid food?

Technically, not allowed. I don't know what applies to a sneaky drag on a roach under cover of a convenient blanket. You could ask Wiki.

What about when they are out of public sight and cameras, surely you would be tempted to eat?

<sigh> Let's be realistic. A hunger-strike is a protest, see? An act of political symbolism. Does that mean anything to you? Symbolism? What do you think this is about? Do you want someone to get killed, or something? Think how much trouble people would get into if someone died during a hunger-strike; you want to get the local friendly policeman and the district magistrate into trouble? Hanh? What kind of anti-social thinking is that?

Anyway, what people do in the privacy of their homes is none of your business. Or my business.

Anywho I was just curious, and as usual turned to wikipedia for answer . And what do you, they even had information about hunger strikes.

Sure! Why not! This is perfectly normal, and nothing to get surreptitious about! You'd think people are starving to death or something, the way you're acting.

Roy Gourav and Joe Shearer seem to be making fun at the plight of the destitutes in Tripura. Are these people Dalit or what? But, finally they are human beings, and their complaints must be given due consideration. If common persons like these two well (or ill?) groomed Indians are unsympathetic towards them, it is no wonder that the govt people will show more disdain towards them.

The grievances must be noted by the govts and the victims must be compensated. Otherwise, it is now the Indian govt that is stealing lands from its own citizens. Is India can be called a democratic country, if all these undemocratic things are done by the govt itself? This is unthinkable in Bangladesh.

I am a dalit..whats your point?

Firstly I wasn't making fun of anything, was genuinely curious, stop being a thought police. Secondly, just like everywhere else in the world, national interest takes precedence over citizen's interest. Land was taken to construct the border fence, which was needed to stop the poor Indians migrating into Bangladesh. Lastly India has a population of 1.2 Billion, to get noticed by the government you need to make an effort, so don't you worry about these people. They are our people and we ll take care of them. Save us your theatrics.

As it happens, I am a Shudra, so stop trying to fish in troubled waters by ascribing caste motives to people's comments. This is exactly the reaction that was sought of you by Kanna, and it is amusing that you have found nothing better to do but to salivate at the sound of the bell that he rang. All these people have been taken care of, and they are asking for more, so save your tears for your Bangladeshi smugglers, who take huge sums of money from poor Bangladeshi villagers to bribe the BDR to look the other way. When the BSF stop them, there is a hue and cry; when it is pointed out that there is no fence, there is a hue and cry, and it is said that such a fence should not be built and Bangladesh will not contribute towards it; and now, finally, when a fence is built on Indian soil, your anguish knows no bounds but overflows with such drama and fake emotion!

Do you know how much ill-will these unchecked inflows are causing? Do you know how strongly people whose cities are inflicted by masses of these poor, working for food if they don't get wages, feel?

What will be your next set of demands? Like visas on arrival, will you seek passports on arrival for your nationals visiting India for 30 years or more? Feel free to ask, nobody will kick your backside for that or any other outrageous demand that you have, but keep your caste insinuations to yourself.

There demand is quite justified. The complain isn't about barbed wire but rehabilitation. You pov and your GOVs pov seems as much disgusting as it can be. Most those protesters must be from the tribal areas of NE who always gets nothing when it comes to citizen rights. Anyways it's not my concern, carry on.

And the God of morality has spoken. As if Bangladeshis never have grievances with their government. Why is this thread in the Bangladeshi section anyways? Mods could you please move this thread to a relevant section.

When you don't know the facts, don't comment.

They were offered full packages for what they've lost. However, their approach is the easy way out; where someone has lost a few square feet, or an illegally constructed temple under a tree has gone, they want employment for a certain number of members of the family in government. These are all refugee Bengalis from Bangladesh, Tripura border people from the Belonia area, no tribals, so perhaps we should ask you to pay for the rehabilitation.

I love the way you armchair pundits spin vast conspiracy theories, caste struggles, about the affected being Dalits, ethnic struggles, about the affected being tribesmen from the north-east, and the like, without even knowing where the trouble is located, or what or who the population is over there.

The leader of the agitation is a Subal Bhaumik; what does he sound like to you? Or have you slaughtered off all the Hindus and no longer remember? There are no Bhaumiks native to Tripura; they've all emigrated during one pogrom or the other.

Further, he leads the Simanta Bhumi Suraksha Samiti. Do you need to know Khasi or Nagamese to understand this?

But you aren't particularly bothered about facts, are you? Only the chance to exercise your lungs, while sitting safely at home. Keep it up.

.
WOW, five lines from me generates 18 lines from you. Good.
Now tell me something,
you mentioned that
They were offered full packages for what they've lost.
care to elaborate?

About Subal Bhaumik and Simanta Bhumi Suraksha Samiti, do they really sound Bangladeshi? Atleast according to you guys, all of the immigrants are Muslims. Still I personnaly know many khasia artists, many of 'em lost their lands here and there and its not uncommon that some intellectuals will use them as a weapon for publicity.

Before you post anymore of your sugarbuns pls do mention where the hell did I write 'bout dalits and stuffs? Your writing reminds me of some one, who asked-

"Should I pretend to be Shakespeare in a desperate attempt to achieve social recognition?"

.
So forever, Indian govt does all the implementation ignoring the ground realities. Lol.

You did not write about Dalits but it was written by EastWatch
