PESHAWAR: The disgruntled MPAs of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf on Wednesday warned they would boycott the upcoming budget session of the assembly if the provincial government didn’t expose the elements behind the vilification campaign against the deputy speaker’s family over a ‘concocted’ rape case within 10 days.
Deputy speaker Imtiaz Shahid told information minister Shah Farman in the assembly’s committee room that an important government functionary was involved in the smearing campaign against him and his family.
The deputy speaker heads a 14-member pressure group in the assembly and suspected that the matter was scandalised to counter the group.
They boycotted the ongoing session of the assembly, which was requisitioned by the opposition to discuss eight-point agenda, including the law and order situation in the province.
Ask govt to expose those vilifying deputy speaker’s family
A local newspaper recently reported that a brother of the deputy speaker was allegedly involved in a woman’s rape in Kohat.
A case was registered against the suspect. Later, PTI MPA Sardar Idrees brought a privilege motion against reporters of two local newspapers and a private TV channel for releasing the news, which was referred to the relevant committee.
When Speaker Asad Qaisar was about to give the floor to the opposition to start debate on the law and order situation, focal person of the pressure group Qurban Ali Khan asked the chair to allow him to speak on a point of order.
Members of the pressure group had tied black bands around their arms as a mark of protest.
He said people gave mandate to PTI to rule the province pinning lots of hopes in Imran Khan.
“The PTI slogan “we have come out in the defence of the country, come and follow us’ gave hope to the people but now, the party’s own MPAs are being involved in factitious cases.
“If our grievances are not addressed within 10 days, then we will boycott the upcoming budget session,” warned MPA Qurban Ali Khan.
The warning stunned the entire house and the agenda was set aside.
Mr Qurban Ali said the deputy speaker and his family had been ridiculed by involving him in a fake rape case to counter the pressure group.
He said two journalists were also involved in the character assassination of the deputy speaker, who belongs to Kohat district.
“Mr Speaker! This chair has become controversial after the deputy speaker is involved in a fake case. If you can’t dispense justice to the members of this august house, then how will you protect the rights of the people in the province?”The MPA complained that the chief minister and his cabinet members showed non-seriousness and didn’t take notice of the matter.
“If such practices continue, then no one’s dignity and honour will remain safe in this province,” he said demanding independent and speedy inquiry into the case.
Later, members of the pressure group walked out of the house.
The opposition members joined them to show solidarity with the deputy speaker. Earlier, the opposition staged a walkout to protest against the government for ignoring MPAs in the appointment of Class-IV officials in their respective constituencies.
After the issuance of the pressure group’s warning, the PTI-led coalition government could struggle to get the budget for the next fiscal approved by the assembly next month.
In the 124-memebr house, the opposition’s strength is 54 against 70 members of the coalition partners.
“If the pressure group comprising 14 MPAs sticks to their guns and boycott the budget session, then the government will be in difficult position to pass the budget,” opposition MPA Raja Faisal Zaman told Dawn.
Clarifying the situation, information minister Shah Farman said medical report in the alleged rape case was negative, while witnesses and circumstantial evidence had been missing and that it seemed that mala fide intensions were behind the case.
He requested the chair to constitute a high-level committee to look into the matter.
The speaker adjourned the proceedings to calm angry MPAs and resolve the matter.
After holding consultation with the members of the pressure group for around two hours, he formed a committee up to look into the matter.
The speaker will head the committee, whose other members are Sikandar Khan Sherpao, Qalandar Khan Lodhi, Arbab Akbar Hayat, Shah Farman, Inayatullah Khan, Muzaffar Syed, Shah Mohammad, Zahid Durrani, Mufti Said Janan and Abdul Muneem.
The committee will meet on June 4.
The session was later adjourned until 3pm on Friday.
Earlier, the assembly adopted a unanimous resolution to condemn the desecration of the Sikh community’s holy book in Sindh and demanded that the government bring culprits to justice.
MPA Soran Singh tabled the resolution accusing extremist Hindus of committing the act.
