What's new

Direct freight shipping to UK soon

Previously only low draft and small 1800 TEU feeder liners could berth at CTG to feed containers to S'pore or Colombo for trans-shipment to larger (8000-12000 TEU) Super Panamax mother vessels. Those 1800 TEU feeder liners now go directly to EU ports (and now, UK) bypassing s'pore and colombo, saving three to five days and all trans-shipment fees.

Soon 2806 TEU mid-sized container liners like below will join them.

When Bay Terminal (CTG) and Matarbari deep(er) sea ports come online, they will be able to host actual Super Panamax class mother vessels and shipping container will become much faster, relieving the logjam now.
For the time being, it is OK to use these smaller 1800 TEU ships although I believe this type of vessel will be used as feeder vessels in the future to serve Matarbari.

For now, it is cheaper than sending goods to Colombo or Singapore. But, note that five/ six such small ships equal one large mother vessel (8,000 - 12,000). Operating costs are too high for any 5 smaller vessels than it is for one large mother vessel.

So, Matarbari is very much needed. BD has to compete with Vietnamese goods and Vietnam has a few deep sea ports. So, BD needs its own deep sea port in lieu of the current arrangements with shipments made directly from the Chittagong port.

HR Shipping Bangladesh (Karnaphuli Group) operates half a dozen smaller feeder vessels to Colombo. Because of Colombo Backlog, these smaller Bangladeshi-owned feeder ships are going directly to EU ports now. This news is from last year, the direct to EU/UK service is new. Part of the reason is that Hapag Lloyd was not booking Bangladeshi containers from Colombo and S'pore due to backlogs and logjams at those two locations.

Bangladesh’s container ship operator HR Lines Limited, a subsidiary of shipowner Karnaphuli Group, will expand its connectivity with regional transhipment hubs with the procurement of up to six boxships, each having a capacity of around 1,550TEU, in the coming months.

With the acquisition of more ships to its fleet in 2021, HR Lines will expand services between Chattogram and the region’s transhipment hubs.

Since June last year, HR Lines’ two container vessels, Sahare and Sarera, with a capacity of 1,550TEU each, have been operating on the Chattogram–Singapore-Port Klang-Chattogram route.

“Four of the [latest] vessels are expected to join the fleet within the next five months. At least two ships, MV Hr Hera and MV Hr Rhea, of 1,454TEU each, will be deployed on our Chattogram-Colombo Express (CCE) Service from the first week of April this year,” said Hamdan Hossain Chowdhury, director of HR Lines.

These two ships will operate a fixed day, weekly service, Hamdan told Container News.

“Two more ships each with a capacity of 1,550TEU will be added to our fleet in August 2021 and these will also be deployed on the CCE trade, upgrading it to a twice weekly service,” the HR Lines director added.

All vessels operated by HR Lines are owned by the parent Karnaphuli Group and are registered under the Bangladesh Flag. HR Lines, as a Bangladesh company as well as a Bangladesh flag vessel operator, commenced its operations in mid-2020.

Hamdan said the container line has finalised its agency appointments in Colombo. Clarion Shipping Private Limited, a company of Hayleys PLC group, will be acting as its cargo booking agents and Eastern Maritime Limited will be its husbanding agents.

"With the launching of CCE, we expect to move 240,000TEU between Bangladesh and our three major transhipment hubs of Singapore, Port Klang and Colombo in 2021, our first full year of operation,” said Raimah Chowdhury, managing director at HR Lines.

A Bangladeshi container feeder service - HR Lines, will make its debut voyage from Chittagong port on 22 June, connecting to Singapore and Port Klang, opening another avenue for shippers to feeder cargo to mainline vessels.

The Bangladesh Express Service operates with two 1,500 teu vessels and will depart Chittagong every Monday.

In the absence of a deepsea port, ferrying goods to and from Bangladesh is dependent on low-draught feeder vessels. Currently, some 84 container vessels from 22 foreign carriers move cargo for the $90bn export-import trade to and from Colombo, Singapore and Port Klang.

HR Lines’ new feeder service, operated by HR Lines, will be the only flag-carrier container feeder service owned by a local private sector conglomerate, using sister ships Sarera and Sahare, which used to operate Pacific International Lines’ Singapore-Chittagong services.

In Chittagong, the last locally owned feeder service, operated by HRC Shipping, stopped sailing in 2010, leaving the business to foreign companies.

The Sahare has been acquired from PIL, which over the past couple of months has been forced to sell owned-vessels, return chartered ships and seek the help of the Singapore government to repair its battered balance sheet. It is now registered in Bangladesh, and all vessels markings as well as classification and call signs have all been changed accordingly.

The vessels will enjoy priority berthing at Chittagong and are entitled to carry up to 50% export-import cargo under the Bangladesh Flag Vessel (Protection) Act, 2019.

HR Lines director Hamdan Hossain Chowdhury told The Loadstar that as Bangladeshi-flagged vessels, the priority berthing meant no berthing delays and reliable mother vessel connections in Singapore and Port Klang.

“Hence schedule integrity makes this service a premium one,” he added.

Fellow director Raimah Chowdhury said that, as a flag-carrier employing Bangladeshi crew, the company would help save the country millions of dollars in foreign exchange.

She said: “We are expecting healthy loadings on all our voyages, south and northbound. Our ambition is to grow our fleet and network in the near future.”

Shippers have welcomed the new feeder service as its priority berthing will help them get containers delivered much earlier, while other vessels face congestion in Chittagong port.

Sahed Hossain, an apparel exporter, said: “That’s good news for us. The fixed day service will ensure timely reaching of our cargo to catch the mother vessel.”

As Bangladesh’s premier gateway, Chittagong, handled 3.08m teu last year.

Sorry, please read many of his previous posts in other threads. He bullied me all the time for no reasons. I speak my mind and say what I believe is good for the country. But, he does not respect my opinion and losing a debate he starts abusing me, calling me an Indian or what.

I want to teach that English imposter b*stard all the time to come until he apologizes for his disrespectful behavior. I will make his stay difficult. He should be taught civility. When he is civilized I have this option to return to civility.

@mb444, come with two Bangladesh flags instead of two white UK flags. Bloody son of a Namasudra fisherman!!!

Bhai shara duniya-ke civility shikhano to shombhob na.

Eto jid nia ki korben. Mup kore den are "ignore" kore den.

Apnari lubh.

i thought wtf wat slaves are these countries.
You have criticized for our people to become slave labor. But, please say something how to become masters without learning knowledges from others who are already million years ahead of us.

Japan, a poor country then, refused to accept the full time fate slavery in the 1800s. But, I have seen a documentary (real) where the factory manager turns the wall clock back by one hour so that workers work one hours additional without getting overtime payment.

The visiting govt dignitary could not just stand the smell inside a factory. He came out and vomited. People were forced to accept the harsh winter constructing dams and railways living in the makeshift shades.

I can say many thousand other things, but it would suffice to say that there is no gain without pains. But, what we do is to ask donor countries to send us dollars. We eat and do not develop our countries.

No country ever developed without its own efforts, but we want to develop easy and painless asking dollars that we say development. I do not think this is sustainable.

I can say it is for now Vietnam that is developing. Our people will remain the slaves of developed countries for the next few centuries unless FDIs are forthcoming and we produce technology products.

I believe that Colombo is to transship for the western destinations in Europe, and Singapore and Port Kelang for Japan, Korea and American ports. But, this the first time I ever heard of Port Kelang/ Malaysia being used for transshipment.

In the beginning I was not aware of the importance of the construction of Matarbari port. Now, I am fully aware of its importance not only for BD but also for Indian NE, Bhutan and Nepal.

When peace is established in the region, China or MM will also use Matarbari for their foreign trades. Although Sittwe can be a substitute, but I think MM people may not be able to operate/ handle mother vessels there, loading, unloading and transportation needed.

For another matter, please note how the GoB has changed the mindset of India by offering the Ctg. port. India was constructing berths at Sittwe for its NE uses.

Now, with the offer of Chittagong port uses to India, India will find Sittwe a distant port. Thus, the NE cargo business in the sea and land will be handled by BD. BD gets fees out of it and also a DEFENSE leverage.

We are all Bangladeshis, we can have differences of opinions but we need not fight among us.

I have to laud the impressive way BD is making economic progress, and looking after the interests of its people. BD got independence in 1971 from Pakistan, and look at BD now. They have $45 Billion in Foreign Reserves and making really good impressive economic progress.

Meanwhile just look at Pakistan - it is in state of Disaster. Foreign Reserves down to $15 Billion, economy in tatters, Law and order is in tatters, terrorism everywhere, the Begging Bowl is out, the Pakistan establishment is laying down on its knees and begging for some charity money. It is a shocking reality, and extreme embarrassment for us in Pakistan.

You will not like when I say that your military is eating up most of your money that could have been used to industrialize Pakistan and develop its infrastructures.

The biggest problem of Pakistan is that the Pakistan Army is a State within State, and has done tremendous damage to Pakistani people. Our Generals have shamelessly rented out our soldiers and people to fight Anglo-Saxon wars. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING !

Slaves have to eat too. Consider yourself lucky that you don't live in these countries and are not 'slaving' in a shirt factory. They get by on a lot less money than you do.

As you grow older you will realize how the world works (or doesn't).

Bhai Galagali korey ki lubh? "Ignore" korey den - you won't see their posts again.

Or maybe they can too. Jhogra-jhati mezaz kharap korey lubh nai. Moter omil thakbei.

you are wrong we are the slaves in the west, wat is produced by our third world, is then sent to first world country where we do the next job is picking and packing and loading trucks. so not that lucky heavy dog work.

slaves got to eat so does a dog a donkey but the human slave requires more than that. it seems you are accepting slavery. slavery can be broken but our ppl are born slaves and are sly, they thrive on others misery.

What choice do you think countries like Bangladesh have?
We need those low margin export orders to keep people employed and earn forex. Garments workers despite their low wages are better off than what they would have made in villages.
If our exporters suddenly increase the prices they quote to buyers to support much higher wages, the buyers will take their orders away. This is how global capitalism works. The way out of poverty for BD is to industrialise, export more and more while also upskilling the labour force through education and keeping Mullahs in check. Once BD starts making high end goods in large enough quantities, we can limit garments production to high end products only which can support higher wages.

You also need to be willing to fully utilise the technical assistance given to you. China, Japan, South Korea, etc. has had unrivalled determination to pull themselves out of misery and they did. Countries like BD need to do the same.
