While the top Pentagon brass assert their commitment to the use of diplomacy to stop the threat of a nuclear confrontation with North Korea, military rank and file are quietly taking steps to prepare for the unthinkable.

As US Secretary of Defense James Mattis and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson avow that the US is — according to Tillerson — "ready to talk anytime" to end the threat of nuclear war with the increasingly isolated People's Democratic Republic of Korea (DPRK), an uptick in mock battle drills and logistical exercises mimicking a full scale land-based war are taking place on American soil.

Recent large-scale training exercises, while referred to (if noted at all) by Pentagon spokespersons as standard Defense Department operations are increasing in size and frequency, according to the New York Times, indicating a move to readiness — albeit more quietly — not seen since the ramp-up to the 2003 US invasion of Iraq.

Pentagon remarks suggest that new expanded land-based invasion exercises are simply additional and ongoing counter-terrorism training programs, but the size and scope point to a much larger operating theater, evidenced by a drill last month at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in which a reported mix of 48 Apache helicopter gunships and Chinook cargo helicopters transferred large numbers of troops and supplies in a practice invasion while undergoing live artillery fire.

The Fort Bragg exercise was followed in less than 48 hours by a nighttime Nevada-based drill in which hundreds of 82nd Airborne Division paratroopers leapt from C-17 cargo aircraft at low altitudes in darkness, simulating a wide-ranging, land-based troop invasion.

In February, according to reports, an unnamed quantity of mainland US Army bases will see over 1,000 reserve soldiers gain experience setting up logistical depots designed to quickly move combat troops and supplies toward a battlefront, according to Nytimes.com

Adding to the expanded land-based invasion-style drills in the continental US are moves to deploy additional Special Operations forces in South Korea, ostensibly to bolster security at the high-profile 2018 Winter Olympics taking place in and around mountainous Pyeongchang county, some 80 miles from the DPRK border.

Occuring in a climate of increasingly heated rhetoric between US President Donald Trump and DPRK leader Kim Jong-un, a January 13 false incoming ballistic missile emergency warning in Hawaii comes at a time when not only military commanders, but ordinary citizens are continuously forced to consider their options in the event of a 21st century nuclear attack.

sputniknews, you bunch of traitors to world-peace...

all this does is prove that you Russians are getting more aggressive again,
this time under the banner of promoting peace.

everybody sees right through your bullshit, sputniknews, and Russians who desire the Americans to fail against North-Korea.

you're now (as a Russian nation) siding with the North-Koreans.
YES, just after 2 incidents where your government complained about anti-ICBM equipment sales from the US to Japan,
and this incident right here.

we don't take stuff like this lightly. the Americans don't, and i don't either.

So what is wrong with polishing the big stick while waiting for the diplomats to work things out ?

it's like asking someone for money with a gun in your hand... That's how the opposite side will feel...
Nothing wrong with it... if both sides are "Mature" enough... to accept such "actions"...

But given the present "personality" of both sides...well...things could... move ..quickly...

.
Even 5 star general McArthur, under even more ruthless President Truman, failed!!!! And, they were commanding the "greatest US generation ever"!!!! How will the current maggots and faggots fare??!?!

But we are not asking for money so the analogy failed.

Why do generals asks for surrenders ? After all, I am winning, no ? Your ports are so damaged that they cannot dock ships. Your most favored harbors are blockaded. Your hills I controls. Your major cities in ruin. So why should I bother to ask you to surrender ? If this is the 'old days', I could add in that your women are in our pens and your fields salted. And yet, I want your surrender.

The other extreme is diplomacy. Never mind the symbolism of a surrender. With diplomacy, at least you will avoid the terrible things that the war extreme will bring.

You are right about the polished "Big Stick", it will fit right into Donald or for that matter the average American joe.

well total surrender of "something" that is strategic to someone... is like a one way asking for money... it's the same.
It's not like I hold rocketman dearly in my heart , quite the opposite... but that's how it could be perceived by the other side...so if ppl want to solve it via diplomacy..then this approcah is wrong and will bear no result...
But if the goal is to start a conflict...well..; it's perfect...

No, it is not the same and the perception is wrong. What is North Korea losing ?

It is common sense. It is like having a lawyer standing by while you try to negotiate without involving the final resolution -- the court.

Pressure is not pressure if there is no tangible method of applying it if necessary. Diplomacy implies compromises and a compromise implies a degree of loss of what one want. Not a total loss but just a degree of it.

Whether it is to settle a lawsuit or trying to defuse an internationally tense issue, there are two reasons why I would engage in diplomacy:

- I believe in compromises achieved thru negotiations

- I am compelled into negotiations

The first reason is considered to be the nobler one. It is a moral compulsion. The US and Canada often have disputes over fishing, but neither country invokes its military might. Both countries believes that the moral compulsion should be the first reason why we enters negotiations.

The second reason is crass. I maybe compelled by a threat of violence or a drastic loss of something, but no matter, I am externally compelled. If I do not believe in the moral compulsion, I must be pressured by a physical alternative.

The second reason is what is happening here. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the world's nuclear powers have either been slowly reducing their nuclear weapons stockpiles or not increasing them. The Korean peninsula has been tense for decades so why introduce nuclear weapons into the mix ? That is the question. Reunification is the least on everyone's minds.
