Business should never be nationalised. I believe there are some areas of society where the state should have a presence; for example defence, health, education - it is the responsbility of the state to take a front foot in these areas.

I also think the state should be present in energy, public transport, communications, banking, manufacture of pharmacueticals, farming, construction. All the things that are required for the basic survival of the state. There should be state owned companies which have a presence to provide services at lower cost than the market to ensure people aren't burdened with the essentials.

For example the state should run at cost price buses and trains, but if someone wants to use a rickshaw, taxi or private coach - the state doesn't need a footprint there.

The state should be farming staple crops, dairy, meat, fruit, vegetables and providing them at the cheapest possible rates to market. However this should not be 100% of market demand, just enough to ensure the price rigging done by major land owners and mill owners cannot happen.

At the same time, the state should not be exporting any produce, rather it should facilitate local farmers to export their produce and help them make more money that way. Any product bought to local market should be sold by local vendors hired by the state.

We should be providing energy (once the debt is paid off) at little over cost price. Cheaper energy costs will put more more money into the hands of the every day consumers. However the price should be high enough to cover maintenance and improvement of the energy infrastructure network too.

The state should be making social housing so that property is affordable to the common man. These houses should be small simple units for families, not villas and gated private estates for the rich and wealthy. The state should not be a real estate mogul.

The state should be producing medication under license so that the consumer can get cheap drugs. The state should also be facilitating research in collaboration with the private sector so that new drugs can be provided on the market at a reasonable cost.

The state should have no business manufacturing or controling the prices of anything that is not an essential item.

I hope you can see the distinction i personally make where the state should and shouldn't be involved.
