Twitter confirmed that access was gain to Twitter's employees accounts, which have access to the tools and admin rights on twitter accounts. Those accounts are then used to placed twits on different influential people's twitter pages for bitcoin scams.

Horrid show for Twitter. It is not just hacking individual's accounts, but the Twitter platform itself.
It means the platform is not secured enough, susceptible to cyber attacks and can be hacked easily.
Food for thought for everyone.

Given the whole platform itself was hacked, and given how most IT companies outsource the Run-The-Company and support functions to low cost locations like India which requires a very high level of access to perform(eg root access) and the large presence Twitter has in India, it is a fair to assume it was hacked via Twitters India location..
