Diamer Bhasha Dam: New developments made

MIRPUR - Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has received pre-qualification bids from as many as five joint ventures of foreign and local firms through international competitive bidding for construction of main dam and appurtenant structures of Diamer Bhasha Dam Project.

“The pre-qualification bids would be evaluated in accordance with the bid documents and the relevant procurement rules of the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) and the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC),” a spokesman of Wapda said Wednesday.

Diamer Bhasha Dam is a multipurpose project aiming at water storage, flood mitigation and power generation. The project will be constructed across River Indus about 40-kilometer downstream of Chillas town.

The 272-meter high Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) Dam will have a gross water storage capacity of 8.1 million acre feet (MAF). The project will generate 4,500 megawatt of electricity with annual energy generation of more than 18 billion units of low-cost and environment friendly electricity.

With construction of Diamer Basha Dam Project, the life of Tarbela Dam will enhance to another 35 years. It will also have a positive impact on the annual energy generation of the projects in the downstream areas, the spokesman said.

It is estimated that the annual energy generation of the existing hydel power stations including Tarbela, Ghazi Barotha, Jinnah and Chashma will increase by about 2.5 billion per annum, while annual energy generation of the future hydropower projects including Dasu, Pattan and Thakot will also surge by another 7.5 billion units, he added

So it is going to generate the highest amount of electricity per single dam i.e; 4,500 megawatt, current highest is Tarbela dam with 3500 MW. I think after it's completion, things would be better as current demand is 19,000 MW and current supply is 16,000 MW. Hope we could do some thing about electricity theft, breakage and line losses in the meanwhile.

Pakistan doesn’t really have problem with electricity generation at this time and more capacity is being constantly added, there has been an extraordinary increase in the last 5 years or so. Pakistan’s problem is that your electricity companies that run the distribution end are bankrupt and in an ever increasing cycle of massive debt . It ( the dam) will probably help in 10 years if it does get completed but Pakistan’s power issues are elsewhere, not at the generating end.

Actually a lot of smaller check dams can get constructed this way at the local end, many such dams have been constructed in India. However the fact that your agricultural lands are held in a feudal system makes it of little interest to the common men to get involved in.

I think even IK lacks such leadership skills or moving into the PM house have has started to have a toll on him. There is a Masjid called Masjid-e-Shab Bhar and it was constructed by the volunteers in a single night. But you need a leader..Can IK pull such a stuff, I doubt.

On the second thought, why the poor always sacrifice...why not use these corrupt to both fund and construct the dam. Arrest them, get the money out and tell them work as labourers on the dam if they want to avoid public capital punishments.

Bhasha dam is in remote area. In Pakistan labour tend to make small part of overall cost. Locals there who are willing to work should be given jobs. This also tend to be one of the reasons they give up lands. Increased prosperity and economic development because of dam.

We are not in 60’s when Pakistan shipped of Mirpuris to UK after Mangla dam.

Your badly mistaken. Feudalism in it's normative sense has disappeared from most of Pakistan. To begin with most of the region in North Pakistan that might benefit from 'check' dams has fragmented farms in hilly country and was never feudal hold even the past. Instead it was small freeholders and yeoman country. Only in the south of Pakistan - lower Punjab and Sindh does the feudals take over.

Instead it was small freeholders and yeoman country. Only in the south of Pakistan - lower Punjab and Sindh does the feudals take over.

Fragmented farms in hilly districts also are likely to have few volunteers. Check dams there can be built with government intervention. Your large agricultural holdings and the most fertile lands are in Sindh and Punjab. There the problem I pointed out remains.
