WHAT Dhoni has done is unlike what most leaders do. He announced he was giving up his role as a captain and would help mentoring the new captain of the Indian cricket team!
He knew he was getting old, that his famous helicopter shots, his ability to win games single handedly, and his cool captainship was getting hit by his advancing years, but instead of trying to prove that he was still the best, he decided to groom his successor! Grooming a successor is very important in the development of leadership. But like I said at the beginning, very rarely done. I have seen excellent organizations and businesses dying a quick death after a founder chairman has died. “Why didn’t your chairman groom a successor before he died?” I once asked a director of a leading company.
“Because, he wanted to show the world how good he was!” he replied sadly, “He wanted to show that nobody would be able to replace him or replicate his leadership!”
Leaders are often scared that if they teach a new person their methods and ways, the successor will do better than they did, and everybody will then forget them. In other words, most leaders do not groom a successor because they are insecure about themselves. “What if he does better than me?” is their fear.
They retire reluctantly and wait for news that the business is doing badly. They wait to hear people say that in their days, the company was so different. They don’t realize that if the present leadership is doing badly, the blame is entirely theirs! They should have developed the next line of leaders.
The second part of developing a leader, is to stay silent afterwards when the new leader makes mistakes. Let him or her make mistakes, because it is through mistakes they learn. If the new leader comes to the old leader for advice let him give the advice, otherwise refrain from making comments, and above all else, refrain from trying to come back and take up leadership again. The youth have to learn, and the only way to learn swimming is by knowing what it is to drown a bit. The only way to walk is by having fallen when we were small.
The good leader teaches, then decides not to interfere and takes pride as the person he has groomed starts doing well, and even better than himself, knowing with quiet satisfaction, it was because of his teaching that the new person is strong. Watch teachers in school, so proud when an ex-student does well in life. That is how Dhoni will feel as the next captain he trains brings glory to India! Learn to build leaders, then learn to move into the background..!

This is exactly what happens in senior management roles. The established managers never teach the new guy about the nitty gritties of the business. The new guy becomes helpless and learns everything the hard way.
This is because of the insecurities of the present leadership.
I have been victim to one such manager in a previous company I worked in.

That is the major difference between a leader and manager. Also manager will always try to act as the company is his own... and a leader will act as the product and the team is his own.

Kohli is destined to do great things, but he still has a lot to learn from Dhoni when it comes to captaining in limited overs format. I was not impressed by him the other day, while Morgan was hitting all over the park he was completely clueless as a captain, changing the field with pretty much every ball, it is like submitting to the whims and wishes of the batsmen. You should make the batsman choose his shots based on your field setting, you do not let the batsman dictate your field settings. However he is still new, I am sure he will improve.

How could he not? Any responsible senior would, Kohli is just too animated and expressive as a captain, even Nasser was blabbering about how morgan exposed him as a captain :hitwall:

However Kohli has a shrewd mind and will definitely overcome this, happens to all the new captains.

BTW what do you think of Yuvraj's innings? Do you think he could handle pace and lateral movement in England (CT 2017)?

yuvi problem is never of Technique.. but his physical body.

I don't think you understood me, let me explain, Players like Sehwag and Yuvi never relied too much on technique, what they had was otherworldly hand eye coordination and super fast reflexes, in his days Sehwag could hit cover drives without an inch of footwork, same goes for Yuvi, However with aging the reflexes get increasingly slow, Yuvraj is literally on his last legs, no matter how much he thrashes mediocre bowlers on flat pancake like pitches there will still be doubts over his selection in Champions Trophy, England is like the graveyard for the oldies, heck Players like Sachin, Dravid and Laxman could not cope with lateral swing in England with all their mastery due to their reflexes being slowed down with old age. Dravid used to get bowled more often during the last couple years of his career due to poor reflex.

However there is another side of this debate, since pitches for ODI these days are same flat phattas all over the world, there is a very little chance of us being offered with green mambas there, but even then those pitches will at least have something for the bowlers, I am not sure how much equipped Yuvi is to face the likes of Rabada, broad and Starc in non Indian wickets. I have always been his fan, in 2014 Malinga exposed and embarrassed him, I do not want that to happen again .He served India a lot, deserves to retire with dignity. If he indeed gets selected I hope to God that he proves me wrong and show the world what he is capable of, none will be happier than me.

Dhoni is still one of the fittest in the team at this age, do you think he still has the same big hitting ability? fitness issues can be rectified in a matter of months, but once your reflexes are gone they never come back
