8 Apr, 2015
Text: TNN & Agencies

The Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) has developed the electronically upgraded desi version of the original Swedish 155mm Bofors howitzer, and the guns are currently at the trial stage.

The artillery gun has been christened 'Dhanush'. We take a look at some interesting facts about it:

Long-forgotten designs
8 Apr, 2015
The long-forgotten designs obtained under transfer of technology (ToT) provisions in the infamous Rs 1,437-crore Bofors contract in 1986 for 410 howitzers have been used to develop the new guns.

Army wants 414 such guns
8 Apr, 2015
The Army wants 414 such guns. They have been upgraded to 45-calibre from the original 39-calibre to give the new howitzer a 38-km range compared to the 30-km of the original Bofors gun.

The OFB has already been given an over Rs 1,260 crore order to make 114 howitzers.

20-25% better
8 Apr, 2015
Both the Army and OFB, in fact, are 'quite excited' about Dhanush, which they claim performs '20-25% better' than the original Bofors gun in virtually all parameters like range, accuracy, consistency, low and high angle of fire and shoot-and-scoot ability.

Around 80% indigenous now
8 Apr, 2015
'Dhanush is around 80% indigenous now. It costs just about Rs 14 crore apiece. Only its APU (auxiliary power unit), electronic dial sights and a few other small items are imported.,' an official has told TOI.

Began work a few years ago
8 Apr, 2015
The Army-OFB team began work a few years ago on the original designs.

There was a slight setback to the project when the barrel of a Dhanush prototype burst during firing trials at Pokhran in August 2013. But officials contend it was the use of 'old ammunition with air bubbles' that led to the accident.

Nothing in there to excited .We knows it will work and will be a success.Swedish technology is already is in their hand .

Great to see these guns in action. Artillery modernisation has been one sector fallen behind for dacades. Now MOD has rectifying the issue with huge modernisation plans. Impact of which will be huge for our armed forces.
More indigenious , better it is.

Indian army needs more than 4000+ artillery pieces and more than 3000 would be 155 mm towed artillery guns:woot:, i'am personified to hear that, but danush has a lot of room to improve......maybe different types of shells......like this one

can dhanush fire these????:-)

It cost 2.2 MILLION $ for 1 GUN ?

WTF !!! its a Rip Off.

I bet the private players can make the gun for less than 1 million $ per gun.

lolss....
Govt clears proposal to acquire 814 artillery guns for Rs 15,570 crore - The Times of India

that is 814 artillery guns for 2511 mn >>>> 3 mn for 1 gun so how its rip off

Are you saying its NOT a Rip off ?

M 777 Ultra Light Guns are available for 4.48 million $ per Gun. This is made up of Titanium and Carbon fibres and weighs only 3,400 kg and can easily be air lifted to any location and quickly set up.

Bofors weight 11,500 kg and cannot be air lifted and deployed fast and cost 3.2 million $ as per your own estimate.

For 3 million $ we should be able to buy self propelled artillery Guns.

How can Indian ordinance factory produce Guns which cost as much as those manufactures in the US or Europe ? it should be at least 3 times cheaper !!!!

Sweden brought Archer Artillery system for 4.16 million $ per Gun. ANd they are self propelled !!!!

It is carried by a Volvo A30D 6×6 articulated all-terrain hauler vehicle. The vehicle cabin and engine compartment are fully armoured and the cab is fitted with bullet and fragmentation-proof windows. The cabin seats up to four personnel. The vehicle carries 21 155mm projectiles in the fully automatic magazine, and with Excalibur it can fire upto 60 km.
