This article wasn't written by a real Bengali from West Bengal, some Bangladeshi (not Bengali, mind it) has just quoted two lines from a Bengali writer, purposely out of context, and went on a verbal diarrohea to claim that since unskilled Bangladeshis have flooded the foreign countries in millions, working as taxi drivers and in local curry shops; they are now representing Bengalis in foreign countries, not the highly skilled and intelligent real Bengalis from West Bengal working with large corporates in foreign countries! What a shame.....!

From my perspective as an expat, this is broadly accurate. Based on looking this in an international perspective, since we're much more ethnically homogeneous than India, Bangladeshis are much more upfront and proud of being both Bangladeshi and Bengali. When it comes to Indian Bengalis, they just seem to be lumped with all Indian people in general. The only time they really stand out is during Bengali New Year. And yet, we still outshine them in this regard.

বাঙালিকে মানুষ করছে বাংলাদেশের বাঙালিরা

এই লেখাটি উসকে দিয়েছে কলকাতা থেকে প্রকাশিত পাক্ষিক দেশ পত্রিকার একটা লেখা। ২ সেপ্টেম্বর ওই পত্রিকায় সুমিত মিত্র লিখেছেন, ‘বাঙালি মানেই দশটা-পাঁচটার চাকরি।’ সুমিত মিত্র বলছেন, বাঙালি বলতে পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন দেশে এখন বাংলাদেশের মানুষকে বোঝায়। তাঁর ভাষায়, ‘পৃথিবীর সব প্রান্তে, বিশেষ করে উন্নত দেশসমূহে, “বাঙালি” পরিচয়টির অর্থ বাংলাদেশের মানুষ।’ সুমিত মিত্র বলছেন, পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বাঙালিরা চাকরি খোঁজে, অক্সফোর্ড বা কেমব্রিজকেই তার জীবনের গন্তব্য মনে করে, কিন্তু দেশে হোক, কিংবা বিদেশে হোক, কঠোর শারীরিক পরিশ্রমের কাজ করে না, ফলে তাদের হাতে ব্যবসা করার পুঁজি আসে না, ফলে পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন প্রান্তে বাংলাদেশ থেকে যাওয়া মানুষদের এখন দেখা যাচ্ছে বড় বড় ব্যবসাপ্রতিষ্ঠান চালাচ্ছে, আবার রাস্তায় হয়তো ফেরিওয়ালার কাজও করছে—কিন্তু পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বাঙালিদের সেখানে খুঁজে পাওয়া যায় না। সুমিত মিত্র লিখেছেন, ‘শুধু ইতালি নয়, ফ্রান্স, স্পেনসহ ইউরোপের প্রায় সব দেশেই চীনা-জাপানি বাদ দিয়ে সবচেয়ে পরিচিত এশীয় মুখটি হচ্ছে বাংলাদেশের।’
ব্রিটেনে বাংলাদেশের মানুষেরা মোটামুটিভাবে পাল্টা উপনিবেশ কায়েম করেছেন। সুমিত মিত্র থেকে হুবহু উদ্ধৃতি দিই—‘সাবেকি পূর্ববঙ্গের ডায়াস্পোরা অবশ্য প্রাচীন। ঊনবিংশ শতকের পালতোলা জাহাজের লঙ্গর হয়ে সিলেটের মানুষ লন্ডনে বসবাস শুরু করেন। কিন্তু বাংলাদেশের জন্মের পর বিলেতে বাঙালি ও বাংলাদেশি সমার্থক। তার কারণ, শুধু ব্রিটেনে পাঁচ লক্ষ বাঙালির বসবাস করাই নয়। আসল কারণ, আর্থসামাজিক মাপকাঠিতে তাদের উপরে উঠে আসা। ১৯৭৮ সালে জাতিদাঙ্গার ফলে লন্ডনে অভিবাসী যে-বাংলাদেশি যুবকটি নিহত হন, তাঁর নামে পরবর্তীকালে তৈরি হয় একটি পার্ক—আফতাব আলী পার্ক। ব্রিক লেনে তিন-চার দশক ধরে যাঁরা শুধু বাংলাদেশি ভোজনালয় বানিয়ে সন্তুষ্ট ছিলেন, তাঁরাই এখন বানিয়েছেন অনেক নতুন ব্যবসা। ট্যাক্সি, মর্টগেজ ও সম্পত্তি-কারবার। তাঁদের সন্তান, বিশেষ করে মেয়েরা, এখন শ্বেতাঙ্গদের সঙ্গে পাল্লা দিচ্ছে স্কুল-কলেজ ও বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের পরীক্ষায়। রাজনীতিতেও বাংলাদেশিরা এক অগ্রগামী সম্প্রদায়। এই বছর নির্বাচনে ক্যামডেন টাউন থেকে সাংসদ হয়েছেন টিউলিপ সিদ্দিক। তিনি বাংলাদেশের প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার ভ্রাতুষ্পুত্রী। ব্রিটিশ হাউস অব লর্ডসের সদস্যা ব্যারনেস উদ্দীন হচ্ছেন প্রথম মুসলিম মহিলা, যিনি সম্প্রদায়ের পবিত্র ধর্মগ্রন্থে হস্তস্থাপন করে শপথ নিয়েছিলেন।’
সুমিতের এই লেখায় সামান্য ভুল আছে, টিউলিপ সিদ্দিক আমাদের প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার ভ্রাতুষ্পুত্রী নন, ভগ্নির পুত্রী, সহজ বাংলায় ভাগনি, টিউলিপ সিদ্দিক বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের দৌহিত্রী, তিনি শেখ রেহানার মেয়ে। আর শুধু টিউলিপ রেজওয়ানা সিদ্দিক নন, আরও দুজন বাংলাদেশি বংশোদ্ভূত নারী ব্রিটিশ পার্লামেন্টের নির্বাচিত সাংসদ—রুশনারা আলী ও রুপা আশা হক।
তবে সুমিত মিত্রের এই পর্যবেক্ষণ—বিদেশে বাঙালি বলতে এখন বাংলাদেশিদেরই বোঝায়—একেবারেই সত্য। তবে একটা ‘কিন্তু’ আছে। ভারতের বাঙালিরা হয়তো পথেঘাটে ব্যবসায় তেমন করে নেই, কিন্তু বিশাল ভারতের অন্য সব প্রদেশের মানুষকে কিন্তু বিদেশে খুব দেখা যায়, তাঁরা বড় বড় ব্যবসাও চালান। অবশ্য সুমিত মিত্র পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বাঙালিদের কথাই বিশেষভাবে বলেছেন—যেমনটা তিনি বলছেন, ‘পশ্চিমবঙ্গবাসী বাঙালিরা দুর্গাপূজার সময় লন্ডনে ও অন্যান্য শহরে আসর মাতালেও তাঁদের জাতিগত পরিচয় নিষ্প্রভ।’ এ জন্য সুমিত দায়ী করছেন পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বাঙালিদের শুধু ডেস্ক-সমন্বিত চাকরি খোঁজার প্রবণতাকে, কায়িক শ্রম ও ব্যবসায় অনীহাকে।
গত মাসে আমার সুযোগ হয়েছিল লন্ডনে যাওয়ার। সেখানে ‘সংহতি’ নামে একটা সাহিত্য-সংস্কৃতি সংগঠন গড়ে তুলেছেন বাংলাদেশের বাঙালিরা, তাঁরা আয়োজন করেছিলেন ২৫ বছর পূর্তি উৎসব। শুধু কবিতা নিয়ে, শুধু সাহিত্য নিয়ে মেতে থেকে একটা সংগঠন ২৫ বছর পার করে দিল, টিমটিম করে নয়, উজ্জ্বলভাবে, দেখে-শুনে-জেনে মুগ্ধই হয়েছি। তাঁরা এখন প্রতিবছর কবিতা উৎসব আয়োজন করেন লন্ডনে, সেখানে বাংলাদেশ থেকে যান কবি নির্মলেন্দু গু্ণের মতো কবিরা—বাহ্। আর দেশ পত্রিকায় সুমিত মিত্র যে-রকমটা বলেছেন, আমার নিজেরও পর্যবেক্ষণ সে-রকমটাই। বিদেশে বাঙালি বলতে এখন বাংলাদেশিদেরই বোঝায়। তাঁরা সেখানে নিয়ে গেছেন শহীদ মিনার, আমার ভাইয়ের রক্ত রাঙানো একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারি, এবং পয়লা বৈশাখ। লন্ডনের রাস্তায়, দোকানে যে বাংলায় লেখা সাইনবোর্ড দেখা যায়, তা ওই বায়ান্নর পথ বেয়ে চলা প্রবাসী বাংলাদেশিদের কল্যাণে। ব্রিটেনের জাতীয় খাবার যে এখন ‘কারি’, সেই উপহারটি দিয়েছে বাংলাদেশ থেকে যাওয়া মানুষেরাই।
২০ বছর আগে আমি প্রথম গিয়েছিলাম যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে আর যুক্তরাজ্যে। নিউইয়র্কে তখন দেখেছিলাম বাংলাদেশি ট্যাক্সিচালকেরা একটা তিন বেডরুমের বাসায় হয়তো পাঁচজন থাকেন, সবাই মিলে পালা করে রান্না করেন, কাউকে কাউকে কার্পেটে ঘুমোতে হয়। আজকে যখন নিউইয়র্কে যাই, দেখতে পাই, সেই বাংলাদেশিরা সবাই নিজের নিজের বাড়িতে থাকেন, ছেলেমেয়েরা পড়ছে আমেরিকার সবচেয়ে ভালো শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠানে, তাঁদের ব্যবসা বিস্তৃত হয়েছে, ২০ বছর আগে যাঁকে দেখেছি হোটেলের চাকরি করতে, এখন তিনি নিজেই তিনটা হোটেলের মালিক। তাঁর বাড়িকে বাড়ি বলা উচিত হবে না, বলতে হবে ম্যানশন।
আমার একজন প্রিয় লেখক আবু রায়হান, ‘বসতপাড়ের নিউইয়র্ক’ নামের কলাম লিখতেন সাপ্তাহিক যায়যায়দিনে, এখনো ট্যাক্সি চালান, কবিতা লেখেন, গান লেখেন, তাঁর লেখা গানের অ্যালবামের প্রকাশনা উৎসব হবে ঢাকায়। কুড়িগ্রামের প্রত্যন্ত চর এলাকার মানুষ, ডিভি-ওয়ান নিয়ে আমেরিকায় গিয়েছিলেন, তারপর একে একে নিয়ে গেছেন সব ভাইবোনকে। এ বছর ফেব্রুয়ারিতে তাঁর নিউইয়র্কের বাসায় গিয়ে উঠেছিলাম। দেখি, আবু রায়হান তাঁর ৬০ বছর বয়সী বড় ভাইকে নিয়ে গেছেন। বড় ভাই তখন এসেছেন মাস খানেক হলো। তিনি একটা সেভেন-ইলেভেন দোকানে চাকরিও নিয়েছেন। আমি বলি, ভাই, আপনি একা একা কাজে যান কেমন করে? তিনি বলেন, মেট্রো ধরে মানে পাতালরেল ধরে যান। আমি বলি, টিকিট কাটেন কীভাবে? তিনি তাঁর টিকিট কাটার যে বর্ণনা দেন, তাতে থাকে রংপুরের ভাষার সৌন্দর্য আর সারল্য, ‘আরে গিয়া বলি, গুড নাইট, টিকিট প্লিজ, অরা কাটি দেয়।’ আমি হাসি, ‘ভাই ভাই, প্রথমে দেখা হলে বলবেন গুড ইভিনিং... কিন্তু আবু রায়হানের ছেলে ক্লাসের ফার্স্টবয়, এখন সে কোন জায়গায় ভর্তি হবে সেই মধুর সমস্যায় আছে, নামীদামি কলেজ তাকে নিতে আগ্রহী।
নিউইয়র্ক প্রায় দখল করে ফেলেছে বাংলাদেশিরা। নিউইয়র্কের আরেকটা ঘটনা বলি। বছর দু-এক আগে নিউইয়র্কে গেছি, সেবার নিউইয়র্কে মুক্তধারার বইমেলা হচ্ছিল, কবি নির্মলেন্দু গু্ণ প্রধান অতিথি। আমাদের বন্ধু, সাবেক সহকর্মী মঞ্জুরুল ইসলামের গাড়িতে করে ঘুরছি। একটা নদীর ধারে গাড়ি পার্ক করে রেখে ছবি তুলছি, গাড়িতে ফিরে এসে দেখি ১২০ ডলারের জরিমানার কাগজ। গাড়ি ভুল জায়গায় পার্ক করা হয়েছে। সেখান থেকে গাড়িতে উঠে আমরা আরেকটা দোকানের সামনে গেলাম, মঞ্জু পার্কিং খুঁজছেন, এমন সময় এক ট্রাফিক পুলিশ এগিয়ে এল আমাদের গাড়ির দিকে, আবার কী ভুল হলো রে বাবা, আবার কি জরিমানা গুনতে হবে—এই শঙ্কার মধ্যে ওই নারী পুলিশ আমার জানালায় টোকা দিল, কাচ নামালাম, তখন নিউইয়র্কের পুলিশ পরিষ্কার বাংলায় বলল, ‘স্যার, কবে এসেছেন ঢাকা থেকে?’ নিউইয়র্কে নাকি এখন কয়েক হাজার বাঙালি ট্রাফিক পুলিশ আছে!
এবার লন্ডনে নামছি টিউব স্টেশনে, এস্কেলেটর বেয়ে, আমরা যাব বিবিসি অফিসে, সেখানে অপেক্ষা করছেন মোয়াজ্জেম হোসেন, মাসুদ হাসান খানেরা, সেদিন আবার টিউবে ধর্মঘট শুরু হবে, খুব ভিড়, তো ওই ভিড়ের মধ্যেই লাল ক্যাপ লাল রঙের ইউনিফর্ম পরা এক নারী সবার হাতে পত্রিকা বিলি করছেন, আমার হাতে একটা দিয়ে বললেন, ‘সালাম আলায়কুম স্যার, কবে এসেছেন?’
আর লন্ডনের শহীদ আফতাব আলী পার্ক? ওখানেই শুরু হলো সংহতির ২৫ বছর পূর্তির উৎসবটা, সেখান থেকে শোভাযাত্রা করে আমরা গেলাম টয়েনবি হলে। তারপর সারা দিন ধরে চলল বাংলা গান, কবিতা, নৃত্য, আলোচনা। ঢাকা থেকে সঙ্গী হিসেবে পেয়েছিলাম শোয়াইব জিবরানকে, তিনি কবি ও অধ্যাপক। ভীষণ মজার মানুষ। লন্ডনে পেলাম কত সুহৃদ সাহিত্যিককে—সংহতির নেতৃবর্গ—কবি ফারুক আহমেদ রনি, কবি ইকবাল হোসেন বুলবুল, কবি মাসুক ইবনে আনিস, নাট্যকার কবি আবু তাহের, কবি তুহিন চৌধুরী, গল্পকার ময়নূর রহমান বাবুল—কতজনের নাম বলব! কবি ও ছড়াকার দিলু নাসের এখনো ভুলতে পারেন না ঢাকার কবিতা-মাতাল দিনগুলোকে।
শামীম আজাদ আপা চলে এলেন, তাঁর নিজের কবিতার অনুষ্ঠান আছে অন্যত্র, ইংরেজ কবিদের সঙ্গে, তার এক ফাঁকে চলে এলেন সংহতির অনুষ্ঠানে, যেমন এলেন আবদুল গাফ্ফার চৌধুরী, সালেহা চৌধুরী, কিংবা মূলধারার কবি স্টিফেন ওয়াটস। এনটিভির বুলবুল হাসান তো ধরেই নিয়ে চলে গেলেন তঁার বাসায়, সায়মা আহমেদ আর মেয়ে রামিরাকে নিয়ে পাতানো তঁার ফ্ল্যাটে। কিংবা লন্ডনের মিউজিয়ামে ঘুরব, সঙ্গী হলেন তাহমিনা আমীর কিংবা একটুখানি দেখা করার জন্য উড়ে এলেন মিজ আয়ারল্যান্ড মাকসুদা আখতার প্রিয়তী। বুলবুল হাসান, প্রথম আলোর প্রতিনিধি তবারুকুল ইসলাম কিংবা লেখক উজ্জ্বল দাশ—এঁদের সঙ্গে লন্ডনের পথে পথে ঘুরতে ঘুরতে মনে হলো, লন্ডন বেশ উন্নত হয়ে গেছে, বেশ আধুনিক স্থাপত্যরীতির ভবন দেখা যাচ্ছে, এটা হয়েছে অলিম্পিক উপলক্ষে।
পূর্ব লন্ডনের গুরুত্ব বেড়েছে, টাওয়ার হ্যামলেটস হয়ে উঠেছে এখানকার ম্যানহাটান, আর তার পেছনে আছে বাংলাদেশিদের অবদান। সেই সব ভবন দেখিয়ে একজন বললেন, ওই সব জায়গায় বাংলাদেশিরা কাজ করে খুব কম। ইন্ডিয়ান পাওয়া যাবে প্রচুর। কাজেই সুমিত মিত্রের পর্যবেক্ষণ হয়তো ঠিকই, কলকাতার বাঙালিরা চাকরি খোঁজে, অক্সফোর্ড বা কেমব্রিজকেই তার জীবনের গন্তব্য মনে করে, কিন্তু বাংলাদেশের বাঙালিরা রাস্তায় কাজ আরম্ভ করে এখন বড় বড় ভবনের মালিকই হতে শুরু করেছেন।
রবীন্দ্রনাথ তাঁর বঙ্গমাতা কবিতায় দুঃখ করেছিলেন, বাংলা মাতা তাঁর সন্তানকে চিরশিশু করে রেখেছেন, তারা কিছুতেই বিদেশে যাবে না, তিনি বাংলা মাকে বলেছেন, ওদের ছেড়ে দাও, সারা পৃথিবী ঘুরে বেড়াক, নিজের জায়গা করে নিক। বলেছেন, ‘সাত কোটি সন্তানেরে, হে মুগ্ধ জননী, রেখেছ বাঙালি করে, মানুষ করনি।’ লন্ডনে কিংবা নিউইয়র্কে, স্টকহোমে কিংবা জেনেভায়—বাঙালিকে দেখা যাবে—তারা সগৌরবে মাথা উঁচু করে আছে—ওই বাঙালি গেছে বাংলাদেশ থেকে। বাঙালি মানুষ নয়, এই অপবাদ ঘোচাচ্ছে বেশির ভাগ ক্ষেত্রে বাংলাদেশ থেকে যাওয়া মানুষেরা।

Nothing to do if you dont understand our idelogy. There is no us and them. We dont differentiate between Bengalis in religious, ethnic or racial lines. Yeah in the past more specifically Hindu Bengalis had renaissance under British, we East Bengalis were behind but that time all Bengal was same. After we got independence, quickly we surpassed West Bengalis. And now synonymous of Bengali is Bangladeshi. Because we have our own ethnic army, ethnic sporting teams, ethnic people all around the world.

Maybe you and a few others like you don't differentiate us on the basis of religion and i appreciate it from the core of my heart but the same can't be said about the majority of the BD population.We too,don't discriminate people on the basis of religion.That's the reason why Bidrohi Kabi is still revered in Bengal just like Kabiguru.The same goes with Sayyed Mustafa Shiraj and countless others like him.
But the majority of the BD population still discriminates people based on religion and the Hindus are systematically being persecuted in BD.Heck,most of the BD members in this forum even call us "Malauns" which is quite a derogatory term as far as we are concerned.They mock our tradition,our culture and most importantly our religion even though it's us who are still following the culture,tradition and the religion of our ancestors.
Heck,yesterday some random BD guy tried to glorify Bakhtiyer Khalji downplaying his brutality against the Buddhist monks of Nalanda and Oidontopuri Bihar and even eulogized him as a national hero of BD conveniently ignoring the fact that he was a Central asian barbarian who forcefully invaded Bengal and converted many of our forefathers at the tip of his sword!!
