Dhaka seeks more data on river flow, Delhi says no on ‘security grounds’

‘Tipaimukh leading to water aggression’
Dam in northeast India, Farakka barrage threatening Bangladesh's existence, say speakers

Calling the outcome of the dam on Barak river at Tipaimukh in Northeastern Indian state of Manipur as "water aggression", Bangladesh Krishak Sramik League's president Bangabir Abdul Kader Siddiqui on Thursday said no country has the right to change or obstruct the course of an international river.
Addressing a roundtable on 'Water Aggression and Tipaimukh Dam' at the Jatiya Press Club, Kader Siddiqui said the problem of Tipaimukh has become a national issue that threatens the existence of Bangladesh.
The seminar was organised by the Sylhet Division Development Students' Action Council. Kader Siddiqui said the government is unable to solve pressing problems because it is capable of resolving only its intra-party problems. On the Tipaimukh issue, he said people should be prepared for a mass upsurge as the big parties will never give up their interests.
Kader Siddiqui also said Army and the BDR are frequently used in economic activities that only create incidents like Pilkhana. The Army's duty, he added, is not to annex political power but to protect the country.
Among others, language hero Abdul Matin; Shafiul Alam Pradhan, president of Jatiya Ganatantrik Party; Kalekuzzaman Bhuiyan, general secretary of Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal; Tipu Biswas, coordinator of Ganatantrik Bam Morcha; Abu Naser Mohammad Rahmatullah, secretary general of Bangladesh Jatiya Party; Dr Tareq Shamsur Rehman, professor of International Relations at Jahangirnagar University; Adovocate Abed Raja, president of Sylhet Division Development Students' Action Council; and MP Shammi Akhtar spoke on the occasion.
Shafiul Alam Pradhan said Farakka barrage and Tipaimukh dam were the result of a political decision. Stressing on people's unity, Pradhan exhorted the people of Bangladesh and those in northeastern states of India to jointly resist New Delhi's decision and solve the problem of Tipaimukh dam.
Tipu Biswas demanded removal of Farakka barrage, calling it the source of desertification of northern Bangladesh. Biswas said it is resulting in annual losses to the tune of Tk 35,000 crore.
Abu Naser Rahmatullah urged the two big parties in the greater interest of the country and address the issue.
Expressing concern on the desiccation of several rivers, Khalequzzaman Bhuiyan said Bangladesh was once a land of rivers but is now turning into a desert due to construction of dams and barrages on international rivers across the border. Dr Tareq Shamsur Rehman said Tipaimukh dam was an impediment to national security and urged people to prevent the politics of aggression of water. Advocate Abed Raja, who chaired the meeting, called for national unity on the issue.

No need of India telling everything to BD. We can use Brahmaputra at our will if it is not harming others. In fact BD should thanks India for building all dams as it can be use to control flood.

.
Bangladesh share 54 rivers with India. that it mean it has to take persmission for all 54 river construction.

.
let the BNP come to power, then GoB will troll GoI.
its a pity we phuck our bilateral relations due to inaction/idiotism of our administrators (of respective countries)

Everything is uncertain at this point. BAL will be ousted but I am afraid it would be bloody & chaotic. Our country has been kept divided over the last 41 years by BAL fagots and India being its master simply took advantage of this, naturally. Your administrators R not idiots but clever foxes IMO. Over the last 4 years U guys had rip off of BD and I don't know what any party can do to undo that. BNP is struggling too by BAL autocracy but I still believe they R a lesser evil. I still remain optimistic. After all asha nie-i to manush bese thakte chai.:)

For decent relations the ball is on the Indian court but being a large neighboor with regional ill ambition, I doubt they would ever take any initiative.

.
Tipaimukh Dam is a run of the river project just like the dams China planning to build in Tibet.BD cheerleaders were exact opposite things there. What a bunch of hypocrites.

your despise towards GoI is understandable and quite legitimate. but u should understand, they are equally, if not more, despised by the indian themselves. hence, cunning or watever u may say about them, they are simply mom-seller-for-money bigots who wont think of benefiting the indian public (hell, our money is being swindled everywhere n everytime). so do u really think these pathetic excuses of ppl are going to think abt the ppl of bangladesh ......????? NAAAAAAAA
abt Bdeshi govt, they are the mere reflection of the so called masters of her larger neighbor. it has also some similarities with the politics of west bengal today. we all know wat cpi-m did, now looking at the gross mismanagement of state affairs by mamta banerjee (farakka issue included), i cant determine which is the lesser evil - tomar deshe bolo baa aamar deshe, asha ke emon pod maara hoyechhe je ekhon bojha mushkil , ki cheyechhilaam aar ki pelaam.
this region (SA) is filled with ppl of high tolerance (not the religion bull crap, but in our day to day lives), which makes it easy for some of us to fool all other ppl into slavery in the name of nationalism, religion and what not.

I don't expect GOI to look after BD? Why should they? Rather hegemony from such a large neighboor should be expected norm under typical geo-political notion. Rather BD should look for ways to counter that hegemony and only then U can have decent bilateral relations (trade, commerce, tourism etc) ,not lovy dovy relations which doesn't make any sense between 2 countries of such vast disparity. Indians here give me doses of not believing in muslim brotherhood in opportune threads. They argue about believing in national interest. Even in terms of national interest does it make sense for BD & India to have equality unless BD becomes strong. 2 countries with such disparity can not ever have mutual interest , ever as per nationalism & national interest.

As for politicians , I agree with U in S.asian context. Its is natural phenomenon but it should be challenged and this is where BD stumbles. At least U have protest going on in India against corruption & rape. None of your parties rig ballots, your police don't act as agents of ruling regime, your media is free, U don't have foreign dalals etc . 2 of your major parties have many common platforms unlike ours. The best thing is that U guys don't have a party like BAL and being a large country your political scenario is simply not comparable with ours. Large countries don't have dalal parties but have the luxury to back proxies.

cant agree more with u on the bold part. lovy dovey should be put to the care of celluloid.
well about muslim brotherhood, if that can help u then u must. case closed. dont care abt india or china or usa. ppl have the habit of name calling....remember rogue nations ???
believing on national interest on the other hand, is much important. although national interest seems too ideal in a world where nothing is perfect .
take it from me....u guys can never match india militarily or otherwise, so being strong can help u with myanmar only. however, a good economy, rather than a good military, can yield you more cards while dealing with india. again, muslim brotehrhood or chin/US, nobody will back u up if u urself arent ready for it....hard and soft power, together is what u need.

As for politicians , I agree with U in S.asian context. Its is natural phenomenon but it should be challenged and this is where BD stumbles.
lol. catch us up in this (ur natural phenomenon).....if u dare. we were "there" from 1947 with a renewed zeal.
At least U have protest going on in India against corruption & rape.
and what are the results ???? more rape and more corruption. we need education and a ban on saas bahu serials.
None of your parties rig ballots,
its good if true.
your police don't act as agents of ruling regime,
now now...who told you that?
your media is free, U don't have foreign dalals etc .
dont get started me on our media... even in the days of propaganda back in 80s, the media had much more ethics and standards.
2 of your major parties have many common platforms unlike ours. The best thing is that U guys don't have a party like BAL and being a large country your political scenario is simply not comparable with ours. Large countries don't have dalal parties but have the luxury to back proxies.
that i agree with u wholeheartedly ....again.

indian leaders are swindlers and after preying on indians to their heart's content they have turned their attention to the neighbors. to deal with these swindlers u have got to have ur own swindlers. but then, homegrown swindlers will try to swindle ur own wealth.
unless, the new educated middle class rise up to the occasion and rule themselves. but that would require at least two generations of wealth and security in the hands of collective middle class to attain that confidence. until then slog on and work for the educated middle class to grow and hope that our children have the guts to stand upto corruption and mismanagement. that shall be the actual democracy that we strive for, not the present one that we have now ( i dunno why they call india a shining model of democracy....althoh with pak, nepal , sri lanka, you n burma with political craze and looming commie china and war torn afghanistan in the region we r somewhat of a shining example)

With a strong economy , a strong military with partial conventional parity is very much possible. We don't need to have fire power to invade India but only capability of giving it a bloodynose. In such a scenario India will have more to loose and will give us respect. S.korea is shining eg. Its not that the chinese can't flatten them to dust in a hypothetical war , but they won't as they know that they will have more to loose in every way imaginable. Currently we lack that kind of power and mired with awami dalals, ideological division & political instability we have a long way to go before that.

As for India as a model, as I said before India being so large is fundamentally dissimilar from the rest of her neighboors except china. The rest of your points , I agree more or less.

To some points, yes. At least U admit India's regional ambitions & the clash of interest it will always have with its smaller nighboors. Also U admit that your country is not a saint , something many of your countrymen don't. :)

But we will truly agree when U will agree to fight for akhand bangladesh .

if u still have suspicions over the bold part, then i am sorry to say that we dont think alike. :azn:

as for the indian fanboys, i am a fanboy too and so are you. so at the end of the day its safe to say we share the chukles.

myself being a bengali in assam, i didnt know much abt bangladesh until when i was 8 when my grandad suddenly yelled " i love bangladesh" ....i say wats with the lunacy , grandad ???..... he shrugged and said i wouldnt understand. today when he is long gone, i am dawning to what he would have meant at that time.
during no net age, there was almost no contact between ppl like us. but now i m commenting on ur posts. I got to know here what you guys actually feel about us. believe me !!!! it had been a humbling experience :undecided: and these are important so that u can see thru the govts' propaganda machines.

aar bhai tumar jokhon otoi suspicions tai le ei neo : joi akhand bangladesh ...(claps):P

1. The current government in New Delhi is acting irresponsibly and unfairly.

They cannot deny access to water flow to the government of 150 million people on the spurious pretext of "security".

This is a clear lie by Manmohan Singh's regime, and such behaviour frustrates us Bangladeshis.

2. The Tipumaikh dam can never be built, we Sylhetis (I am a real Sylheti from Sylhet district of Sylhet division) will never allow our Sylhet a.k.a Jalalabad (Jalalabad is the classical name for Sylhet) to be starved to death and our water and ecology destroyed.

I cannot elaborate on what we can do, but suffice to say we will never allow it to happen.

wait till BJP comes into power. its even better :agree:

@baajey , I was being sarcastic. I know U people R die hard Indians & I consider U as such rather than bengalis. I am not a apar bangla opar bangla believing idiot so no need to force yourself. :D
