Dhaka, Dec 17 (IANS) India’s role in the formation of Bangladesh and the two nation theory is under the spotlight here with the Jamaat-e-Islami chief saying that Indians have always been “hostile” towards Bangladeshis and historians dismissing his views as “seditious”.”The Indians do not like us Bangladeshis because we are Muslims,” Motiur Rahman Nizami, chief of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, said Tuesday in a discussion being held in the run-up to the Dec 29 parliamentary poll.

Nizami also appealed to the voters to elect the alliance led by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chief Khaleda Zia, with whom he and the Islamists shared power during 2001-06.

“Indian soldiers plundered our country indiscriminately during the War of Independence,” he said, referring to India’s role in Bangladesh’s emergence in December 1971.

A war with Pakistan on both fronts in December that year led to 5,000 Indian soldiers and numerous Bangladeshis being killed before 93,000 Pakistani officers and men surrendered to the Indian forces.

“[They] took away not only the arms and ammunition abandoned by the Pakistani troops, but also stripped our factories down to the nuts and bolts and robbed educational institutions of their laboratory equipment and decamped with even bags of blood from the blood banks,” Nizami was quoted as saying in the New Age newspaper.

He justified Pakistan founding father Mohammed Ali Jinnah’s two-nation theory that projected the Muslims and Hindus of undivided India as two separate nations.

“The hostile attitude demonstrated by India towards Bangladesh through the past 37 years also proves that the two-nation theory was absolutely right,” said Nizami, whose party was banned along with several Islamist outfits in the years immediately after independence for their “collaboration” with the Pakistani authorities in killing unarmed civilians.

The Islamists returned to the political mainstream was during the military regime of slain president Ziaur Rahman, who founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Nizami’s questioning of India’s role and reiteration of the two nation theory was lambasted as “seditious” and “a trick to get media coverage ahead of the elections”, The Daily Star said, quoting the views of four historians.

Historians Serajul Islam Choudhury, Anwar Hossain, Imtiaz Ahmed and B.K. Jahangir told the paper that Nizami was trying to “rewrite” the history of South Asia and of Bangladesh and hoped that this would be rejected by the electorate on Dec 29.

They termed Nizami’s remarks an “audacious” and a “tendentiously wrong reading of history” because Bangladesh was “not liberated based on the two-nation theory but Bengali nationalism”.

Historian Anwar Hossain said: “I am inclined to believe that Mr Nizami is trying to retrieve a theory that has long lost its logical, political and historical basis.”

Another historian Serajul Islam Choudhury described Nizami’s statement as amounting to an act of sedition.

“Had the two-nation theory been right, Bangladesh would not have been founded. Foundation of Bangladesh buried the two-nation theory back in 1971,” he said, adding that Jinnah had himself categorically cancelled his own theory.

I am glad that there are people like Nizami still around. The world still has hope against Indian domination and destruction. South Asia has to understand Indias horrific intentions of destroying us. If Pakistan is destroyed bangladesh will be the next target because Akhand Bharat is the goal of India which not only took kashmir but also hyderabad from the muslims and subjegated us to severe persecution.

We have to stand united against the Indian threat

.
I wish the BNP leaders would say something about Akhand Bharat and Indian hegemony and domination.

it's because they are too obsessed with their race/ethnicity/culture or otherwise known as "Bengali nationalism". we, as muslims, need to leave this thinking. ethnic/racial nationalism is what led to the fall of the khilafa, and bloody feud of hatred in 1971. my mother's family lived there, they know first-hand about indian influence and involvement.

Bangladesh discarded Bengali nationalism in 1975 and adopted Bangladeshi nationalism which is the official policy and ideology of the BNP. Bangladeshis nationalism is based on territory and not on ethnic/racial nationalism.

Guys,
Let me ask you a question. If pakistan and bangla decide to be unite does anyone can stop it? May be India or china or who ever it is?
Stop blaming other countries....Today is not the end of the world. Try to bring up the relations..improve it...again dont focus on defence...defence are the ppl who doesnt bring the relations..just brings the more enimity and finally kills its own...
Encorage other sectors ..mainly business and education, welfare of islamic community...

India not scared of military dominence if these countries become one...both countries facing lot of economical problems...try to address it for ur own benifit

This thread has nothing to do with making Bangladesh and Pakistan one country again. Your post distracts from the real issues of the thread.

Tell me one thing.....why wud India want a peice of land that always floods(almst evry year),is one of the most poorest & the most illiterate parts ,i.e Bangladesh..............

The Indians are upset wid dem because of the constant illegal migration of poor Bangladeshis to Indian cities.........Well Pak-Bngla can unite become one country............India doesn't need such lands.........one a hub of terrorist(or an International migraine as it is known in the western media).......& the other a land full of poor, illiterate ppl........

India doesn't give a damn abt these two countries...........it's competition is wid China..................

Are you really Pakistani??????

The thread has very much to do over spliting of country as per your own Title post. Let mods decide if you do not agree.

He justified Pakistan founding father Mohammed Ali Jinnah’s two-nation theory that projected the Muslims and Hindus of undivided India as two separate nations.

But India has same number of Muslims as Pakistan so Jinnah dream does not hold good, If Bangladesh is aggrieved then who stops it from Uniting with Pakistan. Jinnah did not imagine Pakistan be split he did not foresee it.

.
Jinnah did see it but hoped it wont happen. this was during partition when minto morley discussed this with him. he said it will be hard for east pak and west pak to stay together as one country due to more than 1000km of indian territory bw them. on top of this some of our leaders added fuel to the fire by not givin the then banglis their full rights hence creatin an enviornment which made it easier for indians to panetrate

Some people can’t come out of identity crisis and in common practice of hiding behind Pakistani flag and Muslim names.

Language he used in post represents the same views by Indians against Bangladesh.

Do you think BNP can do it in such a situation when India has set the stage for bringing pro-India part if Hassina Wajid; BNP is in deep waters.

My post is a news report about the correctness of the Two Nation Theory. Nothing there on reunification.

Momentum is now behind BNP and Khaleda Zia is drawing the larger crowds. It is still possible that the AL will come to power but they will not get the much needed 2/3rds majority to implement India's blueprint. This will of course create more unrest and may be eventually bloodshed.

What is this man saying? Does he know that the two - nation theory did not envision a split up nation on either end of India? This idiot owes a lot to Jinnah.

As you said he is an idiot. This guy is an anti islamic figure(musrik). Unfortunatly he use an islamic name with malaun mentality. He should realize without Jinnah's leadership there would be no pakistan, therefore no Bangladesh. Ignorant scum...

The subject of this thread does not really deserve a value for comments. But for some informational purposes.. I respect the comments made by mr. Head of Jamaat as it is his own opinion which could be shared by others as well. But this particular person may have to face serious criminal charges within a few days for crime against humanity.

Also I need to remind the person who commented that Bangladesh is the most illeterate country and with floods and so on!!! this comment does not really have any merits and which again just indicate the emptyness(may you call that illeterate) within the commentator himself. By only having the capability of writing does not automatically make anybody literate..
