Bangladesh and India on Wednesday decided to work together to enhance food production to face the possible food crisis due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Their pledge to work together came when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi phoned Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the afternoon.

During the 12-minute telephonic conversation that started at 5:50pm, both the leaders mentioned that their governments have taken initiatives to boost food production to face the possible food crisis due to the coronavirus pandemic.

PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim told UNB said that both the leaders agreed to work together to this end, if needed.

Sheikh Hasina said various international organisations, including the United Nations, have expressed apprehension that the situation may linger.

"So, all the countries of the region will have to work in unison to deal with the situation," she said.

The two leaders appreciated the steps taken by both the countries to combat the pandemic and reiterated their commitment to work together for this purpose.

Both the leaders also agreed to advance the initiatives that the SARRC countries took to fight the COVID-19 in a videoconference held last month in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

Sheikh Hasina extended thanks to Narendra Modi for sending medicines and other medical equipment to Bangladesh to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The Indian Prime Minister phoned Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina around 5:50 pm and extended Bangla Nabo Barsho and Ramadan greetings to her and the people of Bangladesh," Ihsanul Karim said.

"The Bangladesh prime minister also extended Ramadan greetings to Narendra Modi and the people of India," the press secretary said.

The Indian prime minister paid tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the occasion of his birth centenary, he added.

Actually this is sensible.

India has massive ability to manufacture vaccines that BD drug companies may not have.

India's Serum Institute to Make Millions of Potential Coronavirus Vaccine Doses

The Serum Institute of India said on Tuesday it plans this year to produce up to 60 million doses of a potential vaccine against the new coronavirus that is under clinical trial in Britain.

Serum, the world's largest maker of vaccines by volume, is mass-producing the vaccine candidate developed by the University of Oxford, which started testing it on humans last week, and is a leader in the global race to develop an antidote to the novel coronavirus.

Some 3.05 million people have been reported to be infected globally, and by a Reuters tally 211,376 have so far died from COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus.

While the Oxford vaccine, called "ChAdOx1 nCoV-19", is yet to be proven to protect against COVID-19 infection, Serum decided to start making it after it had shown pre-clinical promise and had progressed into human trials, Serum Chief Executive Adar Poonawalla said.

"They are a bunch of very qualified, great scientists (at Oxford)... That's why we said we will go with this and that's why we are confident," Poonawalla told Reuters in a phone interview.

"Being a private limited company, not accountable to public investors or bankers, I can take a little risk and sideline some of the other commercial products and projects that I had planned in my existing facility," Poonawalla said.

More than 100 potential COVID-19 candidate vaccines are now under development by biotech and research teams around the world, and at least six of these are in preliminary testing in people in what are known as Phase 1 clinical trials.

Charlie Weller, head of vaccines at the UK-based global health charity The Wellcome Trust - which is seeking to ensure that COVID-19 funding and research efforts are global - said an effective COVID-19 vaccine would "save countless lives".

Bangladesh should get into an agreement for manufacturing and sale of these vaccines.

India has bigger pharmaceutical industry than Bangladesh which is why I fear letting India tap into the business in Bangladesh might undermine Bangladeshi pharmaceuticals growth

Agree totally here.

But if it just a one-off and BD pharmaceutical companies just do not have the capability to manufactures in the numbers required, then no harm in getting it from Indian companies as finding a way out this pandemic is the most important thing.

The two leaders appreciated the steps taken by both the countries to combat the pandemic and reiterated their commitment to work together to this end.

Both the premiers also agreed to advance the initiatives that the SAARC countries took to fight the COVID-19 in a videoconference held last month in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

Sheikh Hasina extended her thanks to Narendra Modi for sending medicines and other medical equipment to Bangladesh to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Indian prime minister paid tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the occasion of his birth centenary, the press secretary said.

Meanwhile, BSS correspondent from New Delhi said minutes after his talks with the Bangladesh premier, Modi in a tweet message mentioned that he discussed with Sheikh Hasina about COVID-19 situation and the ways India and Bangladesh can collaborate in the fight against the pandemic.

“Spoke to PM Sheikh Hasina to greet her & the people of Bangladesh on the Holy Month of Ramzan…We discussed COVID-19 situation & ways India and Bangladesh can collaborate in the fight against it,” Modi said in the message.

The Indian premier added: “Our relationship with Bangladesh will continue to be one of our highest priorities.”

Meanwhile, an official statement issued in New Delhi said the two leaders discussed the regional situation in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and briefed each other about the steps being taken to mitigate its effects in their respective countries.

It added that both the leaders expressed happiness at the progress made in implementing the special arrangements agreed on March 15 between the leaders of the SAARC countries.

The Indian premier thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her contribution of USD 1.5 million to the SAARC COVID-19 Emergency Fund, the statement said.

“The Bangladesh premier thanked Prime Minister Modi for taking lead in coordinating efforts to combat COVID-19 in the region and for supplying aid to Bangladesh, both in terms of medical supplies and capacity building,” it said.

“Both the leaders expressed satisfaction at continuation of supply of essential items across the border through road, rail, inland waterways and air,” the statement reads.

During the discussion, it said, the Indian Prime Minister recalled the shared bonds of history, culture, language and fraternal ties and expressed satisfaction at the excellent state of bilateral relations between the two countries.

“The premier ensured India’s readiness to help Bangladesh in containing the spread of COVID-19 and in mitigating the health and economic impact of the pandemic,” the statement said.

Prime Minister Modi conveyed his best wishes for the good health and well-being of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and all the friendly people of Bangladesh, in this historic Mujib Barsho, the statement added.

The idea that Bangladeshi pharma companies will be stopped by Indian companies from making their own vaccine is utterly absurd.
It is fantasy paranoia that results in moronic stupidity killing thousands.
Indian companies have signed contracts to manufacture ANYONE's viable vaccine. So has signed with Oxford team and the Ausi team.
Indian companies are not worried in allowing these foreign companies to come and jointly manufacture a vaccine that hopefully will save lives of Millions in the sub-continent.
They will HAPPILY team with anyone that can help manufacture this vaccine and save millions.
Some fantasists would rather Bangladeshi's died than cooperate in saving lives

Lets just hope this is just a PDF phenomenon.

I think he has some bad intentions for Hasina, why he keep calling her and asking to work together for "production" even if it is food and then he calls her to fight together on COVID now I don't know what he thinks COVID is but its not a place to fight with a girl. Those thoughts that he lacked in early and middle manhood years (the reason his wife left) are now popping up in his head.
