Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has taken a move to set a new Guinness World Record through anawareness campaign with participation of the highest number of people in a sweeping programme on April 13.
DSCC Mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon declared the campaign 'Dettol Porichchonno Dhaka" powered by GTV and supported by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) at a press briefing at Nagar Bhaban in the capital today.

This initiative has been taken to create awareness among people that practicing hygiene should not be limited to personal life only, rather it should be practiced at a community level to build a clean city.

DSCC in collaboration with Reckitt Benckiser Bangladesh will arrange the programme to raise awareness among people to make the city a clean and a healthy one.

The programme will be held on April 13 (Friday) a day before Pahela Baishakh.

The registration for participants in the sweeping programme will start around 8:00am on the day at Nagar Bhaban.

The sweeping programme, led by the DSCC mayor, will start from Golapshah Mazar in Gulistan and end at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital.

Addressing the programme, DSCC Mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon said, "It is not possible to keep the city clean by few of us. This city is our home and it is the responsibility of all to keep it clean. We will enter 1425 through cleaning Dhaka city. I urge the city dwellers to participate in the two-hour cleanliness programme."

My home is under DSCC. Nice to see them beating DNCC in something. Hope they take steps to keep them clean and that this isn't just a one off thing for something irrelevant like Guinness book record. Lets hope it sets off domino effect into DNCC and other parts of the country. Probably won't since Rajshahi, one of the cleanest city hasn't have any effect on other divisions but here's to hoping for the best.

If only the city has enough waste management bins installed throughout. Things can be improve drastically.
First and foremost the remaining road side open dustbins need to rage to the ground. I find it astonishing that such a big public nuisance and health hazard things were put on road side in a first place totally disregarding the horrible bad smell, neighborhood public health hazards or sense of charm.

For Shonar Bangla people, it is nothing new that Japan ka maal Dariya pe daal. Some callous nations like BD cannot eat even when spoon fed. Note the news below. I have heard many of these trucks donated by Japan have not been put into work and many cannot now be used because these need repairing.

These Japanese garbage trucks have already hit the streets of Dhaka on trial giving hope to city dwellers that they one day would not see garbage trucks littering as they trundle along the streets of the capital. Photo: Star Photo: STAR

The Dhaka City Corporation will soon press into service 100 environmentally friendly garbage trucks to reduce pollution and carbon emission in the capital.
Of the vehicles, 35 are trash compactors with a capacity of up to five tonnes.
They also include 20 arm-roll carriers with a capacity of seven tonnes and 45 containers with a capacity of up to five tonnes.
Tariq Bin Yousuf, project director of DCC Landfill Improvement Project, said they received the vehicles from the Japan government last month under the project, Improvement of Solid Waste in Dhaka City towards Low Carbon Society.
"We have started using three compactors and three arm-roll carriers in parts of the city on a trial basis. We will use all the vehicles gradually," he said.
He said the environmentally friendly vehicles could help reduce emission of one tonne of carbon dioxide a day in Dhaka.
"The Dhaka City Corporation now has around 300 garbage trucks including the open ones and other equipment. We will replace those gradually," he said.
Open trucks are not good environmentally as they leave garbage and liquid waste on the streets while carrying those to dumping sites. But trash compactors and arm-roll carriers are free of this limitation, he said.
Compactors have a mechanism to coagulate solid waste. It can also separate liquid and solid waste, he said.
The compactors will collect waste directly from secondary collectors in the city. There are about 2,000 points, where secondary collectors dump household waste, Tariq said.
The high-up said they are training drivers to run the new vehicles. The DCC also submitted a proposal to the LGRD and cooperatives ministry for appointing 50 more drivers on daily payment.
The vehicles will be used in the city's 20 wards, he added.
Tariq said nearly 4,000 tonnes of solid waste is generated a day in the city. Of that, 2,208 tonnes are collected and dumped into two DCC dumping grounds -- one at Matuail and the other at Aminbazar.
The rest get dumped into rivers, canals and other water bodies, open spaces and low-lying areas, he said.

Yeah like every other equipment that needs repairing. I still see these trucks around in Dhaka. So IDK wtf you are on about. You have to remember Dhaka is the most populated city in the world. DNCC with it's limited resources cannot change it overnight

So, why do not you clearly say that people in BD cannot eat ,even if they are spoon fed? Why do you talk about shortage of DNCC money when the GoB should allocate sufficient amount of fund? Thing is, we love to remain dirty, but love to send tons of high rise building photographs in this forum.

It is disgusting to see the lowest quality of living condition in Dhaka. You are just one of those in BD who love to make excuses for the uncleanliness of Dhaka. Your kind of people are sitting in the government. That is why the country is an unclean Hell on this Earth.
