Bangladesh, in a major breakthrough in overseas job market, has sent 230,000 workers abroad so far this year, officials said yesterday.

Officials said that with new countries, such as Russia, Brunei, and Eastern Europe opening their market, Bangladesh aims to send on average over 62,000 workers abroad every month.

“I expect that some 50,000 workers will go to Russia this year after an assurance from Russian employers,” Mosharraf Hossain, labour and expatriates welfare and overseas employment minister, said yesterday.

He said the recipient countries preferred Bangladeshi manpower as they have experience to work in agriculture, construction and plantation fields.

Hossain, who recently visited Brunei to canvass for recruitment of Bangladeshi workers there, said the unrest in the Middle East and global financial crisis had not impacted country’s manpower export. “We are expecting a robust growth in manpower export this year,” the minister said.

Hossain said a significant development has been made to reopen now-stalled labour market in Malaysia, with the legalisation of nearly 300,000 undocumented Bangladeshi workers there being in the final stage of completion.

The minister will visit Malaysia next month to see for himself the legalisation matters and discuss with his counterpart the next round of recruitment.

According to the ministry officials, Bangladesh is desperately trying to explore new destinations to export its manpower by reducing migration costs and providing necessary training.

The steps taken to create new labour markets have started giving positive result and the government has taken initiative to export manpower to Poland, Papua New Guinea, Algeria, South Africa, Angola and Congo, they said.

Bangladesh sent abroad a total of 568,062 job-seekers to different countries last year.

The minister said Bangladesh is implementing various programmes, including courses on language, to turn the huge population into human resource.

Some female interns have already been sent to Japan and over 250 garment workers are expected to be sent shortly, he said.

More than 7.6mn Bangladeshi workers are working in 143 countries.

I thought Bangladeshis had a bad rep in the Middle East.

Didn't Qatar or Bahrain ban Bangladeshi workers because of high crime rate?
