A court here on Wednesday sent 15 Indian fishermen detained by Bangladesh Navy to jail on charges of illegal fishing after intruding into Bangladesh maritime territory.

The detainees are Babul Sarkar, 42, Kartik Das, 45, Sonaram Das, 51, Rajesh Das, 33, Bholanath Das, 60, Basudev Das, 30, Pilton Das, 23, Uttam Das, 35, Mintu Das, 25, Bimol Das, 48, Kiron Das, 64, Surjo Das, 25, Nepal Das, 29, Uttam Das, 26 and Ananda Das, 50. According to police, they all hail from different villages in Kakdwip thana of West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district.

After the detainees were produced at the Judicial Magistrate Court, the judge sent them to the district jail.


Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Mongla police station said BNS Nishan seized a fishing trawler called Ma Laxmi from the Fair Buoy area of the Bay of Bengal on Monday evening during a routine patrol.

The 15 Indian fishermen were caught fishing 90 nautical miles from the Mongla Port.

Abul Manzur, Petty Officer of Bangladesh Navy, filed a case against the Indian fishermen.

The detained fishermen were transferred to the Mongla police station on Tuesday evening, the OC added.

What kind of reporting is this? Is it not that the fishermen have been sent to the district jail on remand for further questioning? But, after reading the news, people may think they were charged by the Public Prosecutor and the Judge sentenced them to some punishment. But, I believe they are on remand and have been sent to Jail Hajat during the time of their trial.

But, why punish them for seeking a little source of money in the BoB. They are poor people. Indian govt should seek their immediate release/repatriation and the GoB should agree to it after they sign promissory notes.

We should not follow Indian examples. They are basically a Be-Raham type of people. These fishermen must be sent back to look after their poor families in India.

23 Indian fishermen held for intrusion into Bangladesh

Members of Bangladesh Navy have arrested 23 Indian fishermen and seized two trawlers for fishing illegally inside Bangladeshi maritime boundary in Bagerhat.

A team of navy spotted the fishing boats -- Swarna Dweep and Amrichha -- in Bangladesh bordering area in the Bay of Bengal yesterday evening and arrested the 23 Indian fishermen, said Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Mongla Police Station.

The navy team also seized the two fishing trawlers, our Bagerhat correspondent reports quoting the OC.

SM Bhuiyan, an official of Bangladesh Navy, filed a case against the arrestees with the local police station today, our Bagerhat correspondent reports quoting the OC.

All of the arrestees hailed from South 24 Parganas and Bijoy Nagar in India's West Bengal state. They were handed over to Mongla police around 4:00pm today, said OC Iqbal.

These indians are fisherman in name only.

What they actually especialise is piracy. They are often armed & attacks fishing vessels & fisherman from BD to loot the catch.

They also steals mooring ropes & other valuables from merchant ships traveling to mongla. These rats were a big reason for Mongla & CTG ports were marked by IMO as piracy prone.

Unchecked these bharti's are great threat to our marine resources, trade, economy & our reputation as a trading nation.
