All eyes are now focused on the Supreme Court after it issued notices to the quarters concerned on the status of the incumbent chief election commissioner (CEC) and four election commission members (ECMs) with regard to Dr Tahirul Qadris petition, questioning their mode of appointment.
Another politician, having belated reservations about the appointment of ECMs and also wants their removal, is Imran Khan of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI), whose party could win hardly one seat in 2002 general election. Presently, both PTI and Dr Qadris Pakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT) are neither represented in Parliament nor provincial legislatures.
Political observers say, PTI which gained massive popularity after its historic rally in Lahore on October 30, 2011, is struggling to maintain it. Even some party insiders concede and this has also been reflected in recent two IRI surveys that Imrans party has witnessed a popularity dip.
On their part, PPP, which after the 2008 polls emerged the largest party in Parliament followed by PML-N and both are opposed to touching the electoral body with elections a few weeks away. But Dr Qadri and Imran, both accused of having the blessing of some unseen forces, are bent on the reconstitution of the ECP, which means a certain delay in elections. These two leaders deny having any support of the invisible forces.
Dr Qadri left Pakistan about five years back. Prior to the completion of term of the National Assembly, elected in 2002, he resigned as MNA. Since then PAT has been dormant.
Interestingly, he is not sure whether or not PAT will take part in the general elections. But he wants certain things to be done for which he staged a sit-in near Parliament last month. Needless to say, he wanted to bring his own brand of revolution through the acceptance of his demands. And, now his revolution has been reduced further: he wants reconstitution of the ECP that was constituted after due deliberations, and as the Law Minister Farooq H Naek claimed, the CEC and ECMs were appointed at per law, following the laid down procedure in 2011.
Demanding new ECP, Dr Tahirul Qadri has only added to confusion - thenews.com.pk
