Srinagar: A major controversy erupted after the prestigious Delhi Public School (DPS) has allegedly asked a Muslim woman teacher in Kashmir not to wear the Abaya (the Islamic gown that covers the body from neck-to-toe).
The incident has created a major political storm in the Muslim-majority state.

Reacting sharply over the move, the Jammu and Kashmir government reportedly said that “Kashmir is not France”.

According to DNA, the Mehbooba Mufti-led government has sent a stern message to the school management saying J&K is not France where the government or any institute could decide the dress code for the people.

Protests rocked the school on Friday after a science teacher was barred from wearing Abaya, the report said.

Scores of students gathered in the main ground and protested against the administration for barring the teacher from wearing the Islamic dress.

The teacher had joined the school just three months ago.

The management has reportedly issued a notice to the teacher asking her to choose between job and Abaya.

The issue also rocked the state Assembly on Saturday with independent MLA from Langate Sheikh Abdul Rasheed raising the issue, the report said.

"Banning of Abaya by a Delhi-based educational trust in a Muslim state is condemnable and unacceptable. Banning the veil is a clear attempt to snatch religious rights and trespassing into one's faith," DNA quoted him as saying.

Responding to the concern, J&K Education Minister Naeem Akhtar reportedly said that J&K is a multi-cultural and multi-religious state.

"People in J&K have all the freedom to take decision about their private lives. Our state is not France where government or some institute decides what dress people should wear. People here have all the freedom to follow their culture, religion and can dress as per their own choice," DNA quoted Akhtar as saying. He assured the House to look into the issue.

I wonder whether going to a Public School where modern science is taught is necessary ?

Again going to a Co-education institute where girls are made to wear skirts and learn English is necessary ?

Never seen any teacher in religious dress in any Indian school so far, though its sensitive issue but if teacher is so particular about dress code then she might looks for schools which allow these veils

.
Does Indian constitution bars any member of particular faith to practise his or her religious or non religious requirements ?

Yes, the religious icons, attire or vestments should not be allowed in schools be it Muslim, Hindu or Christian. At least the children should grow up liberally without exposing to religion. For so many decades many Muslim women never wore these abayas or borqahs. This is particularly true with many north Indian Muslims. Why sudden realisation about religious dressing? Is Bedouin's influencing their religious view so as to bring this into a secular society?

I live in a very Muslim area. Is seeing teachers and students in burqahs in great numbers particularly to a Muslim school. The pupil cover their faces as well as hands and legs in black glouses, socks just like women from Saudi Arabia does. Luckily they are still a minority. This religious obsession is often high during the Roza days considering many of these Muslims are attending religious speeches possibly from radical Moulvi's and preachers who speaks about the importance of the life after death and how Someone in dreams saw a women burning alive (explanation in a gory manner) in jahannum for not covering her hair and such fairy tales so as to get the believers excited. (True story)

Yes, the incident they are using to force women to veil is this only: http://almightyallah01.blogspot.in/p/punishment-of-allah.html

discipline , and dress code is very important in any private school and DPS is the best education institution in india with schools in every major city i guess this episode was unesesary for the teachers cause if they were not satisfied with the rules they could leave the intitution and join a better one of there choice why break the rules ?

no they are not but its not encouraged in private intitutions to wear yourt rligion and its bilieves in publik as there are rules and dress codes which are same for every one why diffrent rules for a pertikular community ?

Proves India is as Islamophobic as France and Switzerland. I think serious efforts need to be made for acceptance of Abaya wearing women as there is acceptance of women in bikinis. It is a simple matter of equal freedoms. A girl should be allowed to wear whatever she wants without combative behavior from the rest of the countrymen. With one of the largest muslim populations this is surprising to see in Indian controlled parts.

No..But it's common sense for the person who is going to enter an educational institution..Uniform code is common for most civilized institutions & mostly in exam due to cheating things happen..

But doesn't Indian constitution already gives special rights to minorities?

The issue in this case seems to be the teacher is deliberately insisting on wearing a dress which do not seems to be common case in any of co educational private indian schools,If she is so particular abt her religious identity or beliefs then she should go to sh cools which allows these dress where teacher is teaching in a hizaab

since this case happened in J & K the issue can be handled with care

why is that pakistanies only concern is rights of muslims what about there duties ?

why should muslims get spcial dress code than other students this will send a wrong mesaage to other students so instead of creating more trouble they should abide by the rules of the institution or simply leave it for a better one

which school i have yet to see one such school please give me a link please

This is the reason acceptance of Muslims are decreasing worldwide day by day.No offense
If you can't hold your religion & minority madness for few hours then you really have issues.
It's not only Muslims who go to school or college..
