Delhi Metro gets the First Driver-less Train in the Country

Is there no one who can take control in case of emergency`?

.
A train runs on a fixed line and stops at pre-fixed places, so it can be automated safely.

Besides, even a train driver can have, say, a heart attack while driving the train!

Only if he has blocked artery , any ways.

I feel that it should be some how be under direct supervision via visuals and etc of some one in the control room. Like a drone pilot. Who can stop or accelerate from the room.

Let's call our resident railway experts.... @anant_s @gslv mk3

And also @AndrewJin , though he is a Chinese, he generally doesn't troll in railway pages! :P

Guys, how safe is the driver-less system?

. .
Congrats!
Sorry...I am not familiar with this sector. As far as I know, we don't have or will have that in my city Wuhan where three lines are in operation and ten lines are in construction. In fact, in most modern metro system, trains are operated with ATO, mostly ATO with a driver to supervise. So basically, their role is not real driving. Drivers simply press the start button, their role, at least in Wuhan is to monitor and most importantly check if all passengers have all boarded the train safely and then with everything in control press the button or push the joystick. In Japan, a train needs two staff, one is the driver, the other is called 車掌(conductor) who has similar duties as Chinese metro drivers have.

. . .
isn't that risky?
On the contrary its safer than a Human driver. London tube system had conducted a study many years back and on analysis of various accidents that took place, they found that a major chunk of accidents are directly attributable to mistakes of driver or section controllers (the person which controls the movement of trains on a segment or section). While a lot of research and engineering solutions have already been developed for automatic track monitoring and signalling, Driver in the locomotive or drive cabin have still persisted.
If you analyse metro railway systems, you'll find that usually there are little or no turn outs (meaning the points where trains change tracks and hence the job of controlling becomes easy as to maintain gap between succeeding and preceding train.
Radio controls for such systems are reliable and commercially available, and while this would be unique in India, such examples are available around the world,

London underground tube system is already planning futuristic train sets which will be completely driverless.

@Abingdonboy

Its automated, there must be a supervisor/driver.
No Not required.

These are always in control of section controllers. At no point of time do these run unsupervised, in fact these are programmed never to jump a signal or over speed thanks to hard wired interlocks on control systems on-board.

For those who want to know technicalities

@AndrewJin Brother i believe some part of Beijing Metro network is slated to come under ATO (Automated train operation) system.

Only if he has blocked artery , any ways.

There is a feature in all rolling stocks (Locomotive, metro rakes etc) called a Dead Man's Pedal. It is present in all drive cabins and the person driving the train has to press the same every few minutes or so. It absence of the same the train brakes automatically. It is designed to take care of emergency in case the driver in indisposed (medical or other reasons).

Meanwhile in Pakistan, we have train less drivers:cry:
Any further development on front of Diesel Locomotives import recently.
Its really sad how Politicians and their apathy has ruined PR netwrok
