Delhi Metro gets the First Driver-less Train in the Country

Delhi Metro’s first driver-less train is equipped with additional features to make the journey more comfortable for the passengers. The six coach train can carry over 2,280 passengers at a time. Here’s all you need to know.
Delhi Metro received its first driver-less train on June 4 from Korea. The six coach train is equipped with advanced features and will run on sections of Phase-III of the network, set to be operational by the end of next year.

The train was ferried by sea to Gujarat’s Mundhra port and was then carried on specially made trailers by road to Delhi.
Manufactured at Changwan in South Korea, these trains have many technological and eco-friendly upgrades, along with additional features, to improve commuters’ comfort and experience of travelling in the metro. They are designed for a maximum speed of 95 kmph and operational speed of 85 kmph.
The trains will also be more energy efficient and have improved features like better regeneration of energy during braking, energy efficient sub-systems like LED lighting and air conditioning.
A total of 20 such driver-less trains will be manufactured in Changwan’s Hyundai Rotem by the end of this year. The remaining 61 are being manufactured at the Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) plant in Bengaluru.
These advanced trains will run on the upcoming Majlish Park-Shiv Vihar (Line 7 – 58.596 km) and Janakpuri West-Botanical Garden (Line 8 – 38.235 km) corridors of Phase 3 which are expected to be operational by next year end.
Though initially drivers will be deputed in the trains, they will be gradually withdrawn, making the trains run on Unattended Train Operation (UTO) mode.
Each coach of this cabin-less train can accommodate a maximum of 380 passengers. And an additional 40 commuters can be accommodated in the train as the driver’s cab will not be required here.
