UN calls on India to 'act urgently' to protect women - The Irish Times - Sun, Dec 30, 2012

The United Nations secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, has called on the Indian government to take urgent action to protect women following the death this weekend of a 23-year-old Delhi student of injuries sustained during a brutal gang rape in the city.

“Every girl and woman has the right to be respected, valued and protected,” Ban said in a statement in which he welcomed current efforts by the government but called for “further steps and reforms to deter such crimes and bring perpetrators to justice”.

The intervention of the UN takes the fall-out from the incident two weeks ago to a new level and underlines the damage it has done to India’s international image, already battered by repeated corruption scandals, a huge power failure earlier this year and slowing economic growth.

The body of the still unnamed victim was cremated according to Hindu rites in the Indian capital shortly after dawn this morning.

More details have emerged about her: the eldest of three children, she was reportedly a bright and funny independent woman from a humble background who impressed her tutors at medical college and taught schoolchildren in the family home, a one-bedroom flat, to help with finances.

Her father is reported to be a loader at Delhi’s airport.

According to friends quoted by local media, she was planning to marry the 28-year-old male friend she was with when the attack took place.

The prime minister, Manmohan Singh, and Sonia Gandhi, the president of the ruling Congress party, met the plane carrying her remains from Singapore, where doctors made a last effort to save her life following 10 days of treatment in India.

Both Mr Singh and Ms Gandhi, along with other senior Indian politicians, have been heavily criticised for their slow and high-handed response to the incident, which has generated outrage, grief and anger across the country.

“It’s been a huge challenge to all them. They have seen the whole affair as basically a law and order problem. There has been no conversation. But that style of top-down politics is not going to work any more, particularly with young, aspirational urban people,” Swapan DasGupta, a Delhi-based analyst, said.

New figures published today revealed that despite 635 reported cases of rape and 745 arrests in Delhi this year, there has been only one conviction.

A total of 572 rapes were reported to Delhi Police in 2011, up from 507 in 2010, 469 in 2009 and 466 in 2008. The government has said it will bring in fast-track courts to accelerate the legal process.

Private funeral

The funeral was conducted in secrecy and under heavy police guard, with the media abiding by a collective decision to stay away.

Demonstrations calling for reforms as well as the execution of the six men detained for the attack continued in Delhi and in other major cities, as they have done every day for nearly two weeks.

Despite a major security operation that has kept mourners and protesters away from the centre of the capital, there were some clashes this afternoon.

Local newspapers said more than 18,000 police had been deployed, nearly a quarter of Delhi police force’s total strength.

India has been plunged into an extraordinary bout of self-analysis following the woman’s death. The media has given blanket coverage of the attack, which took place on a moving bus on the streets of south Delhi on December 16th.

All of today’s front pages and news bulletins were devoted to the incident and its aftermath. High profile new year parties in the capital and elsewhere have been cancelled. Major Bollywood stars have lined up to express their shame and anger.

One of the biggest, Shahrukh Khan, posted on Twitter: “Rape embodies sexuality as our culture and society has defined it. I am so sorry that I am a part of this society and culture.”

Bollywood itself has been under fire. One columnist spoke of how plots of often classic films “sanctify pestering and stalking of women”.

The new interest in sexual crimes has led to a series of reports that would have struggled to make it on air or into newspapers in the normal frenzied India news cycle, where often sensationalist TV channels compete ruthlessly.

One major newspaper ran a list of sexual crimes against women that have taken place in the course of the ongoing battle between security forces and Maoist guerillas in the centre of the country.

Headlined “Women suffer big in India’s state vs rebels war”, it held both sides responsible.

Over the last 24 hours other reported incidents have included a number of cases of women attempting to take their own lives after being gang-raped, the attempted murder of a rape victim in Rajasthan and an infant dying after a rape in Gujerat.

In West Bengal a woman was reportedly raped by three hospital workers after seeking treatment for her baby. A woman was also allegedly assaulted on a bus in Delhi. One man was arrested.

India’s courts have a backlog of hundreds of thousands of cases, which would take decades to clear if all were heard. Facilities for forensic analysis are few and poorly-equipped.

Healthcare in many of the rural areas where assaults are endemic is often rudimentary.

The UN has offered to help India “strengthen critical services for rape victims” with technical expertise and other support as required,” Ban said.

The problem is, however, enormously complex. For example, women in rural India are rendered more vulnerable because a lack of sanitation facilities forces them to defecate in woods or fields after dark.

Mr DasGupta said the affair had laid bare the gulf between India’s political elite and younger voters. “There’s a big demographic factor that we are beginning to see. How parties react to it will determine their political future,” he said.

India's hall of shame: 25 rapes in a week while nation protested against Delhi gangrape INDIA, Updated Dec 31, 2012 at 09:23am IST

New Delhi: Gangraped, tortured, harassed by the accused and the police, a 17-year-old girl in Patiala, Punjab, was driven to suicide by an uncaring criminal justice system. She was repeatedly summoned by policemen and asked to describe details of the rape. "They repeatedly insulted us and asked uncomfortable questions," said victim's mother.

Shaken by the brutality of the crime and apathy of the police, the Punjab and Haryana High Court took suo motu cognisance and issued notice to the IG asking for a report by January 8. An embarrassed Punjab Police itself admitted lapses.

The questions is, why does it take a suicide or a brutal rape like the one in Delhi for the administration to sit up and take note? As protests were raging in the national capital against the rape of the 23-year-old, more than 25 such cases were reported during the same week.

Delhi: The husband of a playschool owner in the national capital raped a three-year-old after sedating her.

Uttar Pradesh: In Faizabad, an investigating officer raped a rape victim.

Gujarat: In Ahmedabad, a man raped his two-and-a-half-year-old relative and dumped her in a field. She died in hospital on Christmas.

Andhra Pradesh: In Hyderabad, a man raped his five-year-old neighbour.

Maharashtra: In Trombay, a man raped a 15-year-old differently-abled girl.

Maharashtra: In Mumbai, three men raped a Nepalese woman in different locations on the same day.

Jammu and Kashmir: In Srinagar, a few men dragged a woman into a jungle, gagged her and then gangraped her.

Tripura: In Agartala, a mob allegedly stripped, gangraped and battered a woman in full public view.

Manipur: In Imphal, a political leader molested a film actress leading to violence on the streets.

Madhya Pradesh: In Sagar, three workers of a government hospital raped a woman who had come to get her daughter treated for burn injuries.

These, however, are just a few blips on the rape map of India. There are many others who don't even find a mention in police records.

Google lights a candle to remember Delhi gangrape victim | Firstpost

Google too has joined India in mourning for the 23-year-old rape victim who succumbed to her injuries on 29 December. Google India had shared an image of a candle yesterday on their official Google plus page. You can view the post here.

The message on the Google Plus post reads, Saluting the courage and fortitude of the Delhi brave heart. Our humble tribute.

And Google search today has a candle at the bottom of the search bar. When you scroll over the candle, a text box reads, In memory of the Delhi braveheart.

Google is known for celebrating anniversaries and birthdays with interactive doodles, but this is perhaps the first time that the search engine has honoured a victim.

The attack has shocked the nation and caused a wave of protests with citizens demanding the government take note of the sexual violence that women in India are subjected to on a daily basis and frame tougher laws to tackle them.

Speaking in context to India out of every 10 lakh people there happens to be "2" raped women whereas in Sweden out of every 10 lakh people there happens to be an exagerating "63" rapes .

Now India might be the first country to generate anti rape rallies and huge protests at every corner of the country . This just goes to show eventhough we have the minimum amount of people to rape ratio ; we further want to reduce it .
My point to my fellow Indian brothers is do not fall into the trap of these Pakisatanis and be disheartened. Their country is already in a very big mess .

Can you contact me Sir? I need to tell you something about Cricket. You can PM me.

I quite like all the noise being made. You have a problem not unlike many of your neighbors- but are lucky that your people and press bring it out into the public view and world stage. never be ashamed to get better and do not shy away because you think your neighbors don't have free press or people that show them in the same or worse rut.

As nation mourns Delhi braveheart, attacks on women continue

New Delhi, December 31, 2012

Indians are protesting the brutal gangrape of the 23-year-old girl and demanding strict anti-rape laws, but these protests have failed to deter the rapists, as more crimes against women come to light across the country.

Uttar Pradesh: Two women were seriously injured when a youth threw acid on them in Muzaffarnagar on Monday. The accused, Pawan Kumar, and the victim Usha, who is married, were involved in a relationship. However, Pawan was planning to get married to another girl which had upset Usha.

Bengal: A 45-year-old woman was murdered Saturday after being allegedly raped in Barasat, 20 km from Kolkata, and her husband was assaulted and is critical after the rapists forced him to drink acid. After raping the woman, the rapists bludgeoned her to death.

Ahmedabad: a 13-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped by her brother-in-law and his friend over a period of four days in Ahmedabad. The victim attempted suicide by consuming poison, following which she was admitted to a hospital. Since then, she has been battling for her life.

Haryana: A B Tech student was arrested in Kurukshetra for allegedly raping his Dalit classmate. The victim told the police that she was going for her tuition class on Friday when the accused came in his car and pulled her inside. She said the accused drove to an isolated area and raped her.

Bihar: Incidents of violence against women in Bihar emerged as a minor and a mentally retarded woman were among three raped in the state, while the nation was revolting against the gangrape of a 23-year-old paramedical student in Delhi, who died. Last week, a 12-year-old girl was gang-raped by three youths in a village in Patna district.

New Delhi: Even as the Capital is angered over the brutal gangrape of the 23-year-old who died, a teenaged girl was molested in a city bus by an off-duty conductor on Sunday. The attacker was arrested, and has been dismissed from service along with two other bus staff.

Hyderabad: Four incidents of sexual assault come to light in Andhra, including two involving policemen, were reported in Andhra Pradesh. Among the victims are two minor girls.

Police in Krishna district of coastal Andhra region booked a constable, D Venkat Rao, on charges of raping a woman.

A woman, deserted by her husband, said the policeman raped her after befriending her when she lodged a complaint against her family.

In another incident in the same district, a village revenue officer (VRO) was booked on charges of raping a woman. The complainant alleged that Boyina Pandu raped the woman after offering her a soft drink laced with sedatives.

In the third incident that took place in Nalgonda district, a constable was arrested for trying to exually assault a minor girl. The girl was rescued by passers-by who heard her cries.

The passers-by also caught the constable and handed him over to the police.

In yet another incident in Prakasam district, a six-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by a man. The girl's family on Sunday lodged a complaint with police in Markapuram that a 40-year-old man lured her with money and committed the crime.

A man is a man who is not afraid of death. Actually rapists are those who get scared when they face death. Let me a see a brave rapist who goes to the protesting crowd in Delhi and loudly declares himself as a rapist. I think it is time to kill not only the rapists but also all his family members. Just eliminate all the poisonous genes that may spread further and poison the society. Kill the rapist's mother, father, children, wife, brothers and everyone. That needs to be done.

The irony of your post is that our leader is black, and before you talk about rape and murder how many women were raped in 1984 during the Delhi riots, and in Kashmir/North East and how many people were murdered/raped?
