Oh thats great, really nice to see more tangible evidence of India's meteoric rise. Congrats to the people of Delhi. Been to Mumbai a couple of times, but don't remember seeing a system like this there; is there a time frame for one being developed there?

i have travelled in delhi metro and its really great..only problem was too many commuters making it too crowded, but i guess thats ok keeping in mind the population and will get beter with time.

In kolkata also the metro is going under a makeover. with lines being extended to almost entire city joning almost every corner.

Don't know how many years it would take to connect airport to new garia! :(

Why yes there is. Three metro lines (2 under construction) and one monorail line (almost complete) are being made.

It have been completed before commonwealth games...nut thanks 2 relience infra for such a great pace

^^It's hardly their fault. You know about our stupid babu culture and how one aggravated party can get a stay order and these projects get delayed by years

The problem is that these metro lines are extremely expensive to build. The revenues are nowhere near enough for them to give proper returns.

Let me give you an example of the Delhi Metro. It is financed with 70% debt and 30% equity (15% each from central and state governments). This is the first year that they would be able to service their interest obligations (around Rs. 300 crores)!!!

Delhi metro does not have enough money for 3rd and 4th phases of expansion. Without Viability Gap funding from multilateral institutions like the World Bank, all these project are bound to be a drain on the exchequer.

So, should we build more air conditioned metros or more roads? That's the question.

More Metro's definitely..you are just looking at the investment gone into the infrastructure. If you see the time saved in travel, saved fuel, less traffic congestion, safety, low travel expenses etc will help to boost Delhi's productivity & savings thus benefiting the city in longer run. On the other hand building more roads is not the answer to Delhi travel woes...roads are good but more vehicles on road will only add to travel & environmental problems. Besides where will you build the roads in Delhi??? Land acquisition in Delhi will not be easy task. Different travel modes are necessary for smooth functioning of the city.

Yes they are but they are essential for survival otherwise our cities will be dead. We can't run our country or grow our economy if it takes 2-3 hours to reach offices due to traffic jam.

First of all its Rs 567.63 crore which includes loan amount for Phase I and interest amounts for Phases I and II, to the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Delhi metro does not have enough money for 3rd and 4th phases of expansion.

From starting Delhi Metro doesn't have any money even Delhi Metro was not there but it all get arranged.

You need to understand Delhi Metro is not wall mart it don't have any money or any other metro in the world don't have any money they need funding.

But Delhi Metro is running efficiently and smoothly.

The money is not an issue. When we can build Metro in 10-12 cities of India how on earth you takes Delhi Metro having money as a problem.

1.) No its not like this

The existence of multilateral institutions are for these kinds of projects only otherwise they have no role.

2.) You need to know the economics better we any nation can't survive forget about development if it takes 2-3 hours to reach office.

3.) You are forgetting that because of the Delhi Metro some 5,00,000 vehicles are off the roads if you calculate these vehicles uses 10 liter of fuel diesel/petrol each that makes 50,00,000 Liters per day.

Now, 50,00,000 liters X Rs. 6 (Fuel subsidy provided by govt.) = Rs. 3 crore per day. Rs. 3 crore per day X 365 days = Rs. 1095

That means govt. is saving about Rs. 1100 crore per year by providing metro.

Its govt. which have to pay in the end if they provide fuel subsidy or Metro Train.

But by providing Metro train :

a.) There is very less pollution.

b.) There is no traffic jam.

c.) General Public is saving money, time and energy while traveling.

d.) Lesser accidents.

e.) Less wear and tear of roads.

f.) Thousands of new jobs and skilled manpower

g.) Evolution of new industry we can export also

h.) Boost to economy as bog economic activities provide a stimulus to economy

i.) Other industries like steel, cement, construction etc. are also benefiting

The list goes on and on.

In the end govt is there to provide solution and comfort to public its their job. They are chosen only for this reason.
