LAHORE: Almost a year after riots in Joseph Colony of Lahore saw 100 Christian houses being burnt, a court on Thursday sentenced a Christian man at the heart of the controversy that triggered the riots to death for blasphemy, his lawyer said.

Sawan Masih was convicted of committing blasphemy during the course of a conversation with a Muslim friend in March last year.

After allegations against Masih emerged, more than 3,000 people had rampaged through Joseph Colony, torching some 100 Christian homes.

Naeem Shakir, one of Masih’s lawyers, told AFP that “the judge has announced the death sentence for Sawan Masih.”

“We will appeal the sentence in the Lahore High Court.”

The verdict and sentence were announced inside the jail where Masih was held, Shakir said.

Masih has maintained his innocence and argued that the real reason for the blasphemy allegation was a property dispute between him and his friend.

No one was killed in the rampage through Joseph Colony last year but the incident highlighted the sensitivity towards blasphemy.

A recent report from a US government advisory panel said Pakistan used blasphemy laws more than any other country in the world; listing 14 people on death row and 19 others serving life sentences.

In January 2014, an elderly Briton was sentenced to death for blasphemy, though his lawyers said the court failed to consider “overwhelming” evidence of his mental illness.

Isn't it a fact that you have tampered the thread title?

Still better than making mass murder a PM of your country.

He is acquitted of his charges...after a full blown investigation while he was in opposition....so your point? and anyway this is not about india this is about how insecure muslims in pakistan are that they need to sentece to death anybody who says even a little bit bad about islam while they badmouth other religions at will

And we all know India and its judiciary. A perfect judicial farce.

Some facts.

1 Most of the guys convicted in blasphemy law are Muslims
2 The lawyers of the convicted guy have said that they would appeal in high court. So if he is innocent then decision can be reverced
3 Modi's acquittals are a farce.

Enough said.

!. How many minorities do you have. What is the percentage of people from minorities convicted in blasphemy law to their percentage in total population. You will find your answers there

2. The question is not whether he said something bad about islam or not....the question is should he be sentenced to death over what he said.

3. Moving on....

1 So just because low number of minorities mean low number of convictions in blasphemy. Seems like a made in India. In other words no logic.

2 It is the law of the land. Applies to both muslims and non muslims. Respect it and follow it.

3 I hope you guys vote him as your PM. A country like India is worthy to be ruled by mass murderers.

wow....death sentence for talkilng ill for a religion...just wow...keep it up pakistan

If only such a strict law was present in india too, there would not have been any gujarat riots or recent muzaffarnagar riots against muslims. Snakes need to be killed before they bite you. The extremist hindutva snakes are groomed in india and then people ask why india have some riot every now and then.
