1. Deterrence---The simple fact is that most murderers don't think that they will be caught so they are not deterred from commiting their crimes.
2. Retribution--- Most times it could be seen that the reason for the death penalty has to do with revenge.
3. Innocence ---Can you always 100% garauntee guilt? even with fair and impartial courts errors are made frequently and the death penalty is irrevocable.
4. Fairness --- Ever noticed the people who get executed tend to be the poorer or badly represented elements of society?
5. I would want the person to rot slowly doing hard labour not to murder them.
1. There has been research into death penalty by some economists. It has been observed that from a situation of no death penalty, having small number of executions reduces murders. In fact from a situation of no death penalties, the first execution reduces muders by 11 (im not sure of the figures because i read it in economist magazine few months ago). But every successive death penalty reduces murders by a smaller number (which makes sense) because people scared of dying will not committ murder with small number of executions but as you increase number of executions you run up against the more irrational people you speak of who are not deterrred by dying.
3. You cant, which is why i support the death penalty but with a higher standard of proof required.
4. Rich people drive faster on roads on avg than poor people, is that any reason to remove fines for overspeeding? Its not a great idea that rich people can and will get away with murder more often than poor people, but the alternative is that both rich and poor will get away with murder and aggregate result will be that there will be far more murders in society overall.
If the death penalty is introduced in South Africa, 99% of it will be against Black poor people. Is that a bad thing? Well if the 1 for 11 thing holds at low levels, a 50 executions a year (49 black poor) will save around 500 lives (from being murdered). Now some white people may committ murder and get away with it, but from a society's point of view more lives are still being saved.
This reason for opposition to death penalty is the same as saying that no one should own property because rich people live in massive properties where a single family have a ten house bedroom with massive swimming pool and tennis court and this is not fair because poor people live in little shacks.
5. This also doesnt make sense, to keep a person rotting away in prison costs you and society tax dollars and the person's economic output is nil. Its totally pointless. It makes more sense to have a public naked beating of the person for a month and then let him go free to work and live freely. That way the person actually suffers for killing and society doesnt suffer from paying taxes to keep the person in prison.
