A gunman has opened fire in a town near the Philippine capital, Manila, killing at least seven people and wounding six before being shot dead by police. The gunman, reported to be a former local election candidate, ran through the streets of Kawit, 40km (25 miles) south of Manila, shooting at random. A seven-year-old girl and a pregnant woman were among the dead, police said.

They are searching for an accomplice who reportedly helped the gunman load his semi-automatic pistol.
Police named the gunman as Ronald Bae and said he had been drinking heavily on Thursday night.
Mr Bae had once unsuccessfully contested a local election for village chief, they said.

Police spokesman Arnulfo Lopez told Agence France-Presse news agency: "It was random. He would fire at anybody who crossed his path." No motive has yet been determined, but police are hunting a man said to be a caretaker at Mr Bae's home who was seen reloading the weapon during the attack.

One of Mr Bae's neighbours, Maita Lacorte, told AFP: "He was running swiftly and waving his gun. I told my children and grandchildren to run."

The gun attack reportedly started close to Mr Bae's home. The gunman then went to a nearby market, continuing to fire, before returning to his house.

Police surrounded the building and an exchange of fire ensued, during which the gunman was killed.

Police figures show there were 1.2 million registered firearms in the Philippines last year, and about half that number again in unlicensed weapons, AFP reports.

It's a normal thing in some third world democracy country. Philippine is a very corrupt country, some people want village chief position for a change to enriching themselves. The stupid one, spend all his wealth for the election campaign. When he lost, he went bankrupt and gone crazy like this.

Not so surprising........

The relationship between Philippine and China was very good and friendly, before Philippine played zero-sum game and took a side with US.

Just like Taiwan media, willingly to cooperate and to be used by US to promote anti-Chinese campaign. A lot of negative articles about China in Philippine media, very contrast to China media about Philippine. The article above published by BBC, not Xinhua.

Relax take a deep breath, ur having a meltdown. This isn't the first time this sort of thing happened. It happens everywhere. But it was headlines news because of the Connecticut massacre. I do hope the remaining suspect is dealt with swiftly. But based on the Philippines record of criminal prosecution, justice will probably take 50 years to take its course, if ever.

MANILA: Police in the Philippines killed 13 members of a criminal gang in a shootout on Sunday, the third violent incident within days amid widespread calls for stricter gun controls.

The battle erupted after the gunmen in two vehicles tried to smash through a police checkpoint near the town of Atimonan, according to the national police headquarters' operations centre.

A police statement said one senior police officer was wounded and taken to hospital. It said 10 firearms were recovered from the gang members, including an M16 assault rifle.

No other details of the incident in the town 173 km (108 miles) southeast of Manila were available.

The incident occurred two days after a drug-crazed former village official went on a shooting rampage, killing seven people and wounding 12 others, some of whom have life-treatening injuries.

Rolando Bae was himself killed in a subsequent shootout with police.

Also last week two children aged seven and four were killed by stray bullets fired during celebratory gunfire to welcome the New Year.

The incidents triggered public condemnation and calls for stricter controls on gun ownership, with official statistics estimating nearly 600,000 unlicensed guns across the Philippines.

Some 1.2 million licensed firearms were on the registry as of 2012.

Various civic groups as well as the influential Catholic church have called for a total ban on guns on the streets. President Benigno Aquino -- himself a gun aficionado -- has yet to respond to the demand.

Other groups called for the return of capital punishment, which the government banned in 2006.
