Dazzling start to Pongal festival - 15th January

Pongal is a harvest festival that marks the start of spring, is celebrated by Tamils. It is a thanksgiving celebration for a year of bountiful harvest. They also cook Pongal, a traditional sweet rice pudding cooked with cow's milk, which is served to relatives and friends.

Pongal holidays are no more compulsory. Central government lists Pongal holidays as ‘restricted’

Pongal, the popular Tamil harvest festival is no longer a compulsory holiday. The central government has changed the status of the holidays to restricted from compulsory. Right up until this year, Pongal was a compulsory day off. With the change in status, the Pongal holiday cannot be availed of by everyone. As part of the restricted holidays list, the Pongal holiday can only be taken by people who celebrate the festival. The reason behind the decision has not been revealed.

Joined Bukit Panjang residents at their 13th Pongal Festival celebrations this morning.

Pongal is a traditional Tamil harvest festival of thanksgiving. Milk and rice is set aboil in an earthen pot, and the overflowing milk symbolises abundance and prosperity.
