Royal Danish Navy frigate HDMS Niels Juel got underway from Naval Base Korsør en route to the Mediterranean Sea port of Toulon where it will join French aircraft carrier FS Charles de Gaulle for almost two months of training and operations.

Denmark’s defense ministry expressed its interest in sending a warship to join the French carrier in August 2018.

The Iver Huitfeldt-class frigate will operate with France’s sole aircraft from March 4 to April 27, providing air defense for the carrier and other ships from the task group.

FS Charles de Gaulle is deploying after completing an 18-month mid-life refit in November 2018 and wrapping up the final pre-deployment exercise – FANAL 19 – earlier this month. The carrier’s area of operations is scheduled to include the eastern Mediterranean, the Gulf of Aden, the northern Indian Ocean, and the Persian Gulf.

HDMS Niels Juel is deploying with a complement of 160 sailors and an embarked EH101 medium-lift helicopter.

FS Charles de Gaulle will be joined by French escort ships, a submarine and a supply tanker. In addition, a Royal Navy British destroyer and a Portuguese frigate are expected to join the carrier during the deployment

@Vergennes

Those 30 Rafales will provide some serious firepower that is not far off the USN supercarriers.

But do you not think that maybe you need to reduce the Rafales and add some extra Search and Rescue, anti submarine warfare helicopters to have a more balanced air group?

That's usually the number of helicopters deployed on the CDG. Do not forget the helicopters of the escort that can also provide similar capabilities. Both the "Forbin" (air defence frigate,Horizon class) and the "Provence" (anti submarine frigate,FREMM class) can deploy NH90s.

The naval group will be later reinforced by the FREMM "Languedoc",which deploys a NH90 and the anti submarine frigate "Latouche-Tréville" (Georges-Leygues class) that can deploy two Lynx helicopters.

Not to add those of allied nations who regularly integrate the carrier strike group. (This time the Danish,US,Portuguese and British)

Yes I understand that you can also count the helicopters that the escorts would carry as well. In a "hot-war" scenario. CDG would have maybe 4 escorts with at least 4 helicopters on them.
Still it seems like no other Navy with aircraft carriers has such a reliance on basing the bulk of the helicopters on the escorts rather than the carrier itself. Kind of makes sense now why France built 48 Rafale-Ms for only it's single aircraft carrier.

It's a good thing the Norwegians won't be coming :sarcastic:

30 Rafale,two E-2C Hawkeyes 1 dolphin and 1 NH90. :yahoo:
30 Rafales is quite impressive with those hawkeyes added, certainly considering the displacement of the carrier is only like 40.000-45.000. Above that it also has 32 VLS for anti-air missiles and 12 mistral missiles launchers, so it can defend itself against missile attacks. It has 8 Giat f2 20mm autocannons, I am not sure how effective it would be against incoming missiles.

If you compare it to the Us supercarriers, it doesn't come out badly. Individually it has better air defences.

Also, France since recently has started adding AESA radars to their Rafales, I wonder if the naval variant already has them or would soon get them?

The first AESA radar equipped Rafale M,the "M39" was delivered to the navy in october 2013 and operational by june 2014. The Rafale(s) Marine from "M39" to "M48" were delivered equipped with AESA radars.

The rest will be equipped with AESA radars when they'll be upgraded to the most recent standard(s) of the Rafale. The navy will receive several upgraded Rafale to the standard F3R by the end of the year. (4 aircrafts if I'm not wrong)

Could've used the money to buy world-class players for Marseille and win the Champions League....! :(
