Apparently, when the prophet went on the miraj, the first thing he was told was to tell his ummah to perform the cupping. In traditional Islamic medicine, it was a bedrock of treatment.
Again, not an expert, just passing on what I've been told.
I use it as a body maintenance, preventative measure. It is not for everyone, the guys I deal with say they turn away around 10% of applicants, in some cases it can be harmful. They gave me a medical before proceeding.
Also, blood is extremely contagious. I have heard horror stories of practitioners using the same blade, or the same cup, for different patients. Be careful.
