KYIV, June 2 /Ukrinform/. The EU should not respond to Russia's attempts to bring the Crimean issue out of discussions of the overall situation in Ukraine, continuing the policy of non-recognition of the annexation of the peninsula. Such approach will not help Ukraine, and everyone can just forget about Crimea.

MEP from Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis said this in an interview with DW website.

"This can lead to the situation when everyone will forget about Crimea, as it happened with South Ossetia and Georgia. I think that the issue on Crimea should be discussed at the United Nations level. I would fully support the idea to bring this issue to the General Assembly meeting. Ukraine would get support there and would ask the International Court to evaluate the Crimean annexation," he said.

According to the MEP, the legal assessment of the Crimean situation at the UN level will help Ukraine demand compensation from Russia.

This is a internal matter of Russian federation & should be treated as one

What does it matter? Israel annexed Jerusalem even when the US opposes it. Jerusalem is a holy city of Christians, Muslims, Jews.

.
Even if the do go To UN nothing is going to happen.

You mean Russian Federation will use VETO similar like it did during the Georgia conflict.

Israel annexation of East Jerusalem is not accepted by International community.

Once the case of Crimea is being debated in UN General Assembly then only it will be forwarded to UNSC.

The UNSC is powerless. The UN was created to stop the senseless killing, 55 million in WW2. The younger generation does not know the horror of WW2 so the UN is effectively scrapped.

I did not mention the term "VETO" deliberately because I know the UN General Assembly would be termed as "Sham". Because they would be biased against Russia.

Moreover this is a classic example of how the world is using United Nations.

There are sayings:
1) If the conflict is between two Powerful countries UN is no where to be seen.
2) If the conflict is between One Powerful country and a smaller country then UN is with the Powerful.
3) If the conflict is between two members only then UN is never going to solve the conflict because there is going to be a split decision.

It would never going to reach the security council, if it does then Veto will be exercised.

All the above saying can be googled and examples can be found.

Dumbo that was not UN... That was League of Nations.

Google League of Nations and its reasons for failing. UNSC is an exclusive club for the victorious nothing more.

League of Nations was before WW2. UN was set up in 1945 just before end of WW2.

UN Security Council to hold emergency meeting over Ukraine| Ukrinform
KYIV, June 5 /Ukrinform/. On Friday, June 5, the UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting because of the deterioration of situation in the east of Ukraine.

According to Radio Liberty, non-permanent member of the Security Council Lithuania called to hold the meeting after the aggravation of situation in Donbas, in particular, near Mariyinka.

Earlier, Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Yuriy Serheyev wrote on Twitter that Ukraine initiated a meeting of the UN Security Council.

League of Nations was before WW2. UN was set up in 1945 just before end of WW2.
During the Second World War, US President Franklin D. Roosevelt initiated talks on a successor agency to the League of Nations, and the United Nations Charter was drafted at a conference in April–June 1945; this charter took effect 24 October 1945, and the UN began operation.

In 1954, by an internal political action by Communist Party General Secretary Nikita Khrushchev, it became a territory of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic within the Soviet Union
In January 1991, a referendum was held in the Crimean Oblast, and voters approved restoring the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.
However, after the dissolution of the Soviet Union less than a year later, the Autonomous Republic of Crimea was formed as a constituent entity of independent Ukraine, with a majority of Crimean voters approving Ukrainian independence in a December referendum.
On 5 May 1992, the Crimean legislature declared conditional independence, but a referendum to confirm the decision was never held amid opposition from Kiev. The Verkhovna Rada voted to grant Crimea "extensive home rule" during the dispute.

Ukraine after the disintregration of USSR become member of UN with Crimea .Isnt it ?

It's a bit more complicated...

  • The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was an original Member of the United Nations from 24 October 1945.
  • The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, like the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, joined the UN in 1945 separate from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics as a whole.
  • On 24 August 1991, the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic changed its name to Ukraine.
  • On 19 September 1991, the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic informed the United Nations that it had changed its name to Belarus.
  • In a letter dated 24 December 1991, Boris Yeltsin, the President of the Russian Federation, informed the Secretary-General that the membership of the Soviet Union in the Security Council and all other United Nations organs was being continued by the Russian Federation with the support of the 11 member countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

  • After the Second World War, the Crimean ASSR (Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic) was stripped of its autonomy in 1946 and was downgraded to the status of an oblast (memberstate or province) of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic.
  • In 1954, the Crimean Oblast was transferred from the Russian SFSR to the Ukraininan Soviet Socialist Republic by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union. However, it was unclear whether the transfer affected the peninsula's largest city of Sevastopol, which enjoyed a special status in the postwar Soviet Union.
  • In 1990, the Crimean Oblast Soviet proposed the restoration of the Crimean ASSR. The oblast conducted a referendum in 1991, which asked whether Crimea should be elevated into a signatory of the New Union Treaty (that is, became a Union republic on its own). By that time, though, the dissolution of the SU was well underway. The Crimean ASSR was restored for less than a year as part of Soviet Ukraine before Ukrainian independence. Newly independent Ukrain maintained Crimea's autonomous status, while the Supreme Council of Crimea affirmed the peninsula's "state sovereignty".
  • On 21 May 1992, the Supreme Soviet of Russia adopted a resolution, which declared Crimea's 1954 transfer invalid and called for trilateral negotiations on the peninsula's status. Confrontation between the president and parliament of Russia, which later erupted into armed conflict in Moscow, prevented this declaration from having any actual effect in Crimea or Ukraine.
  • In 1993, the Supreme Soviet of Russia claimed Sevastopol was part of Russia, resulting in a territorial dispute with Ukraine.
  • From 1992 to 1994, various pro-Russian political movements attempted to separate Crimea from Ukraine. The 1994 regional elections represented a high point for pro-Russian political factions in Crimea. But the elections came at a difficult time for Crimeans who wanted to rejoin Russia, as the Russian government was engaged in a rapprochement with the West and the Ukrainian government was determined to safeguard its sovereignty. These factors enabled Ukrainian authorities to abolish the Crimean presidency and constitution by 1995, without any meaningful interference or protest from Ukraine's eastern neighbour. Afterwards, pro-Russian movements largely waned, and in 1998, the separatists lost the Crimean Supreme Council election.
