Creation of Hazara Province

The government has tasked the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Azam Khan Swati, with initiating the process of creating a new Hazara province.

At present, Hazara is a region in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, consisting of seven districts: Abbottabad, Battagram, Haripur, Mansehra, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan, and Torghar.

I think this step reflects an increasing realization among Pakistanis that there is a need to divide the existing provinces into smaller, more manageable provinces.

Definitely a need, but splitting them based on ethnic lines is going down a bad road.

Why? And what is the alternative? If there is a strong enough national identity (which I think exists), then having provinces reflecting the ethnic and linguistic characteristics of the population makes sense.

Besides, once you have more of these provinces, the ethnic aspect of these provinces will become less politically relevant, and more a matter of identity.

They are dragging their feet, so that it only happens just before the next election. If they do it now, they will lose Punjab.

In addition to AJK and GB, there seems to be little disagreement on Punjab, South Punjab, Sindh, Baluchistan, KPK, and Hazara. That would mean 6 provinces and 2 territories.

ISLAMABAD, Nov 13 (APP):Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Azam Khan Swati Wednesday said the government was working to create Hazara province and the people would soon get a good news.

Presiding over a meeting here, he said a mechanism had been developed for the creation of the province.

All stakeholders had agreed on establishing the new province, he said adding the demands of the people would be met and their problems would be resolved.

He said Pakistan Tehreek i Insaf would fulfill the promises made in its manifesto.

Where will the money come from to make more provinces???

Any new provinces already have existing economic activities. So the provincial government should be self sustaining.

No ethnic lines, only administration lines.

This will solve so many problems politically and help people by giving them more democratic control of their area.

Why waist money by giving big salaries and perks to MPAs. Revoke provincial status, and make Divisions as the second layer of Government. Make Divisional Commissioner as the administrative head of a division which is appointed by the government. In big cities, publicly elected Mayor as the head of city administrations and in rural areas publicly elect deputy commissioner and district Council for each district of the Division.
National finance commission award should go to each Division.

Turkey has 7 Regions and 81 provinces.
