CPC shares destiny with nation and people
Global Times

Today is the 93rd birthday of the Communist Party of China (CPC). The leadership of the CPC over the past 65 years has brought China prosperity and gradually formed a development path that differs greatly from the West. However, the CPC, despite its long-term rule, also faces severe challenges in terms of its own improvement, the most prominent of which is corruption among officials. An objective evaluation of the CPC has become a significant topic in international politics.

The long-term rule of the CPC is a historical rarity. The most comparable example is the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) which ruled 74 years. From its establishment in 1898 to its dissolution in 1991 is exactly 93 years. However, the CPC and CPSU have become less comparable over time. The CPSU made remarkable achievements. But when it came to its 65th year of rule in 1982, the Soviet Union had sunk into serious stagnation and the party had become eroded by bureaucracy. It was the peak of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the US. The former was dragged into the confrontation with the West and failed to improve people's livelihoods and advance by facing reality.

The CPC has done better than the CPSU in connecting with people, unifying with the elite and increasing its capability to learn. The political task of the socialist system is tough, but the CPC was able to learn from the mistakes of its own and others. Constant reforms show the formation of an error-correction and innovation system by the CPC.

With China's rapid rise, grass-roots society has become source of the country's vitality and the market becomes core lever of national economy. Compared with the rigid system of the Soviet Union, China has achieved key social reforms and the leadership of the CPC has not been weakened.

From a global perspective, the CPC has passed the early stage when mistakes could easily be made during the process of building up the socialist system. The problems the CPC faces now are mostly within the framework of national governance. The international risks it faces are also controllable.

Admittedly, China's hard power is far from that of the Soviet Union at that time, and China's core technological capabilities cannot compete with that of the US. China faces many problems, but their emergence and the ways they are being dealt with are how the country advances.

Western countries, particularly the US, have taken a critical tone toward the CPC. These criticisms are based on their values and geopolitical interests and lack objectivity. By contrast, developing countries have attached great importance to the CPC's ruling experience.

The CPC has helped many people in the country escape poverty and built both the soft and hard basic infrastructure required by a modern society. But meanwhile, the CPC needs to solve some core issues such as curbing corruption. The CPC shares the same destiny with the country and its people.
