What's new

Cox’s Bazar airport runway expansion works to begin Sunday

Is there any particular reason why they didn't extend the runway from the other side? I checked on google maps and there is more than 3000ft available for extension of the runway.

Also it's strange that the government is spending so much in a relatively low traffic airport and just 100km away from a major airport.

Good point. For everyone's benefit let me state the reasons for extending CXB runway into the water:

a) The feasibility report provided by the consultant.
b) Aircraft at CXB typically climb out over the ocean and also lands on an approach from the ocean side. Just like any other beach-adjacent airports.
c) Extending runway also depends on the existing runway direction.
d) The water depth on beach end is rather shallow in any case and is feasible. Such beach airports exist everywhere.
e) Probably the lowest cost option and finally, most importantly,
f) The landside territory may also be unavailable.

Traffic at CXB (due to tourism) is projected to increase if larger capacity aircraft are allowed to land, due to runway length extension. B773 and B748 aircraft cannot land at CXB at this time.

There is also significant cargo/logistics potential as there is a huge deep sea container port and large powerplant being built a few KM's North of the airport. The area will see significant growth in real estate and commerce activity due to the deep seas port, besides tourism.

Chittagong which is a major city with humongous amount of export trade logistics and manufacturing activity (100 KM North of CXB) is already more than halfway air traffic saturated, well served and has quite high land prices, so little scope there for expansion due to geographic limitation. Chittagong may also have problems with runway extension beyond a certain length as there are rivers/sea-beaches on both sides of the runway.

By the way, CXB will be one of the first regional airports in Bangladesh to have a 10,700 ft. runway. Dhaka does have a 11,500 ft. single runway now (very well served and traffic saturated) but the regional airports (Sylhet and Chittagong among others) have shorter runways (under 9600 ft.) even though they serve 777-300 sometimes.

So - the govt. has plans to upgrade runways and VOR/DME facilities for Sylhet and Chittagong at least in the short term, to 10,700 feet, as well as conduct Terminal capacity expansion at Sylhet which is ongoing at this time. Dhaka Airport is currently building a third terminal but there will be a replacement airport completed outside Dhaka within a decade which will have at least two 12,500 ft. runways. That airport is in feasibility/design stage.

Here is final form of Sylhet Airport as designed by Heerim Korea

I am not sure about your first point.

As to the second, it makes sense as the government is planning to turn the whole area into a massive tourist hub centred on the world's longest natural beach(100kms) Cox's Bazaar. 10s of billions of US dollars will eventually be spent in the area to make this part of BD attractive to international tourists.

The first and last time I rode a plane from Cox's Bazaar was a propeller plane. I did not see any foreign tourists on the plane.

Now, you are thinking millions of tourists will visit that long Sea Desert only because a few wide-bodied flights will land there or the runway is longer than now.

How stupid you and Hasina are and what a waste of public money!!

Our Dear Leader was talking about cordoning off parts of the beach for use by foreigners only, to increase revenue for private resorts. Kind of like what Jamaica does. So foreign tourists can be comfortable without the presence of non-paying locals. We don't need these foreigners' friendship and bonhomie, just their dollars in exchange for a few days' stay in restricted quarters and pristine beaches. Like Thailand.

No more free-for-all for local tourists who have turned Cox Bazaar into a horrible actual bazaar atmosphere because beach access is free.....they need to start charging people for beach access in the prime spots all the way down to Himchhori.

Quite disappointing that we have to go to the extent of charging them, there should be respect for the motherland. Little country like Montenegro I visited 6 years ago I witnessed a foreigner throw an ice cream wrapper on the floor 3 taxis stopped in their path demanding the man to pick it up and put it in the bin.

These people need to be taught to throw things in the bin. One word for them. Biyaakhol

Biyaakhol will be biyaakhol.

Low class people in our country need enforcement of rules and stiff discipline.

In other words 'danda'. Mairer uporey oshudh nai.

So - until biyaakhol learns civilized behavior, you have to charge people to access services.

No, it is not just about building a longer runway but the whole package of upgrading the infrastructure in the whole region - like roads, railways and hotels etc. All this is ongoing and the total spending(public + private) will run into 10s of billions of US dollars as this is a serious commitment by BD government.

There is plenty of potential for lots of tourists to visit from nearby countries with large Muslim populations like India, Malaysia, Indonesia and even as far away as Gulf region.

Anyway, apart from the airport expansion, the rest of it will be needed for BD purposes and having excellent infrastructure will entice more BD upper middle-class people to holiday in BD rather than abroad.

সাত মণ তেলও জুটবেনা আর রাধাও নাঁচবেনা। Do not please expect too many things will be done by the govt or even if it does, things will change. The beach will be continuously invaded by our uncultured but moneyed local tourists.

As for the govt people, they will be earning two pice from this extravagant and unnecessary project.

CXB airport as it used to look in 2019, the runway extension will be added to the foreground, beyond where the breakwater barrier is, meaning INTO the water further, another 4000 feet. On the right hand of the runway, the work ongoing can be seen for apron and other facilities (even this early).

Agreed. Can you believe some Thadki Europeans even have a problem with women dressing modestly like this?

I guess you cannot please everyone under the sun....
Europeans have their rules and laws. When we are there we must obey their laws and vice versa. We better don't go to European countries to earn a living if we have such a disliking of their laws and should live in our respective Muslim countries, and obey our own Burkini rules set by Mullahs.

I have no personal objection to the expansion of Cox's Bazaar Airport. The only objection I have is the non-presence of any BD design and construction company in this project.

Only once I used this airport to fly back to Dhaka from a visit to Teknaf.
The biggest local construction experience of the country was hatirzheel but that was he army. Private sector, probably bashundhara mall and jamuna future park and that’s about it.
Rest of it, 90% flyover were local firms doing inefficient designs like the colossal moghbazar fly over with huge waste of space. Obsolete design practices basically
@bluesky bhai, there are Bangladeshi architects and civil engineers capable of designing airports and even building them (Abdul Monem and Maxx Group come to mind). The former group have no money to bribe the govt. and the latter are too busy in other mega projects. However a local construction company called MAHL (Mir Akhter Hussain Ltd.) is involved.

The CXB Airport is an effing disgrace. All airports in Bangladesh should be as sophisticated at a minimum like the Shahjalal 3rd terminal (not talking size but efficiency and appearance). CXB looks worse than some train stations in Bangladesh. And these low life Bangladesh tourism officials want to make CXB a tourist Mecca!

There is no weed, no booty to be scored, only watch overweight women dip in the water with Shalwar Kameez.

No burqini even...

Half of the world population are women. So, nothing to worry. But, one must choose before he crosses 28. Below are the photographs of a few Japanese beauties. These are the ones you love to catagorize as Baboon.
