The coronavirus outbreak has brought tourism and other sectors to a standstill and the Assam tourism industry has also been hit by the deadly novel coronavirus pandemic.

According to the Assam tourism department, the northeastern state has faced a loss of over Rs 500 crore revenue collection during this period.

The tourism industry of the state has been hit by the coronavirus outbreak with many prospective domestic and foreign tourists cancelling their plans to visit Assam and other parts of the North-East.

The Union government on March 11 suspended all visas, except a few categories such as diplomatic and employment-based, till April 15 to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Assam Tourism Development Corporation chairman Jayanta Malla Baruah said that the state tourism industry has faced huge loss due to the coronavirus outbreak.

"Last year, around 42,000 foreign tourists had visited Assam and this year, we are expecting more than 60,000 foreign tourists to visit the state. But this number will decrease. From December to April is the main tourism season in Assam but many domestic and foreign tourists have cancelled their bookings due to the coronavirus outbreak. The state tourism sector has been badly affected," Jayanta Malla Baruah said.

He also said that no positive cases of coronavirus have been found in Assam so far but the tourism department has taken preventive measures in all tourist spots in the state.

Greater Guwahati Tour Operator Drivers Association president Ratul Das also said that the tour operators in Guwahati and other parts of the state have been badly affected due to the pandemic.

"All the people are now scared. The drivers of the tourist taxies are not ready to take any foreign tourists. No medical check-up centre has set up at the tourist taxi counters. We appeal the government to take appropriate measures to set up medical check-up centres," Ratul Das said.

Not only tourism, trade between India and Bangladesh has also been affected due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

According to reports, the average trade loss is approximately Rs 200 crore per day at the Sutarkandi border checkpoint in Assam's Karimganj district.

Thousand of trucks loaded with perishable and non-perishable items as well as coal have been stranded at the check post at the Sutarkandi border. Karimganj Exporter and Importer Association president Amaresh Roy said that movement of all passengers, tourists and goods-laden truck has been stopped from both sides.

"The trade between India and Bangladesh has also affected due to coronavirus. Now, importers are not interested in buying any item coming from Bangladesh and the same thing is being witnessed across the border. The entire trade between India and Bangladesh is now totally collapsed," Amaresh Roy said.
