LAHORE: A Pakistani court has acquitted a Christian man who was sentenced to death for blasphemy six years ago in the country’s second largest city, lawyers said Thursday.

Younis Masih, 34, a labourer, was arrested in September 2005 in the low-income Qenchi Amar Siddhu neighbourhood of Lahore after local residents accused him of interrupting a gathering of Sufi singing to make blasphemous remarks.

Masih’s lawyer, Naeem Shakir, said his client was sentenced to death in May 2007 and fined 100,000 rupees ($1,000), but appealed to the high court in Lahore.

“The high court on Wednesday decided to overturn the death sentence and ordered that Masih be acquitted,” Shakir told AFP.

“I argued the case in February and put to the court that there is no direct evidence against Younis Masih and that the case was based on hearsay,” he said.

Blasphemy is a very sensitive issue in Pakistan, where 97 percent of the 180 million population are Muslims, and even unproven allegations can spark a violent public backlash.

Rights campaigners argue the blasphemy laws, for which the maximum penalty is death, are often abused to settle personal scores and should be reformed.

Shakir said his client would be freed “in a couple of days” after he obtained a written copy of the decision and a detailed judgement.

The deputy prosecutor general confirmed the acquittal.

Nadeem Anthony, a lawyer working for the independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan also confirmed the acquittal and hailed the high court decision.

Last month, more than 3,000 furious Muslims rampaged through the Joseph Colony area of Lahore, looting property and burning buildings after a Christian was accused of blasphemy.

Surrounding Punjab province was also the scene of one of the worst outbreaks of anti-Christian violence when a mob burned 77 houses and killed seven people in the town of Gojra in 2009 after rumours that a Quran had been desecrated.

We must take solid action to protect our minorities... that includes Christians and Hindus who need to be protected at each and every step. We must do everything in our power to ensure justice for our minorities.

The blasphemy law has claimed enough lives. We must ensure that it claims no other life. Innocent Christians and Hindus are falsely being accused and framed on charges of terrorism. We must ensure this law goes into the dustbin of history. Blasphemy law is the black law of Pakistan.

7 prime years in jail because of a weird law.

I guess lower courts must be pronouncing everyone guilt in such cases to please mobs and ensure personal safety?

This law is law of Islam and it is going no where Sir those who will commit blasphemy will be taken out what needed to be done is that add one more law to this law that the person who falsely accuses some one of committing Blasphemy will be killed that is the only addition needed to this law

The punishment is death doesn't matter how it is carried out

No he should be given lot of money and those who falsely accused him should be killed in public money will help him at least recover his life

Why money? What is the price of keeping you in jail for six years on death row? Tell me for how much money you would put yourself in that position?

And no one is say he was falsely accused. The court released him by saying his accusation could not be proven. The accusers are still saying he is guilty. It cannot also be proven that the accusers falsely accused him.

Now what?

No Sir either a person is guilty or not guilty we need some addition in laws their can be no grey area when it comes to laws Sir either you are guilty or not guilty and if guilty Islamic punishment is death and if not than those who falsely accused has to be taken out and people rot in our jails for several other crimes sir which are not proven

Sources pls. If no sources, we have to follow what was follwed back then eh?
No Sir ALLAH has ordered to kill not described the punishment but one ayat says about those who spread fitna on the land Islam describes different punishments which includes hanging and death by most horrible means so he or she becomes example but for death ALLAH says the punishment is death

Well put.

To me this whole Blasphemy Law is just a method to scare ppl and enforce the will of the majority whilst strengthing the hold of fundamentalists.

Not sure if this has a place in civilised society.

As an example...

Fateh comes in my private home, he starts abusing the Prophet. I take him to court and I say he abused the Prophet. They ask me for proof, I don't have proof other than me, myself.

In the whole process Fateh sits in jail for 2 years.

Now I MAY be lying too. But the court does not know.

who goes to jail after releasing Fateh?

I think on the ID card renewals we should make everyone sign who is in support of Blasphemy laws. In such cases where a person's valuable years are wasted and no guilty party is determined, by means of a draw we should send one of you supporters of Blasphemy laws to equivalent number of years in jail. Now that's fair.

What,ALLAH is a murderer???If you wanna kill somebody, why drag God in to it.Why use God for the Justification for committing murder??God Doesn't kill people,People kill people. Why drag God's name to justify your bad deeds.

Hey @Zarvan; how much money will you take to be locked up in jail for 6 years on false charges?

Most of all; the guy is lucky that some Mumtaz Quadri type Hero did not get to him. Otherwise he'd not even get a chance to get acquitted and hope to get the money that Zarvan is offering!

So Zarvan; how much money are you offering?

Sir you will be judged by your past records and if any suspicion proven than your will not be accepted and at first both should be let go but if a person ends up in jail and later its found he was not guilty than the accused should be taken out Sir if you will not have this law than people will take law in their own hands and according to retired police officer who was in favour of changing this law said since creation of Pakistan to the day this law was made part of Pakistani constitution in 470 above murder cases when Police caught the culprit and asked him why he or she killed they told the reason for Blasphemy Sir and these are those cases in which murdered was caught and don't know how many are those who are not caught

.
All those in that sufi gathering should be charged with blasphemy!
