Isro starts countdown for GSLV-F05 launch

The countdown for the launch of Isro's advanced weather satellite INSAT-3DR on-board GSLV-F05 commenced at 11.10 hours on Wednesday, the space agency said.

Earlier, the Mission Readiness Review committee and Launch Authorisation Board cleared the countdown.

"The 29 hour countdown operation of GSLV-F05/INSAT-3DR Mission has started at 11.10 hrs on September 7," Isro said.

GSLV-F05 is the flight in which the indigenously developed Cryogenic Upper Stage (CUS) will be carried on-board for the fourth time during a GSLV flight.

GSLV-F05 is significant since it is the first operational flight of GSLV carrying Cryogenic Upper Stage.

Besides offering a host of services, INSAT-3DR would join the operational Search and Rescue service provided by INSAT-3D to various users, including Coast Guard, Airport Authority of India, Shipping and Defense Services.

The designed mission life of INSAT-3DR is 10

INSAT-3DR

1. A
dvanced meteorological satellite with an imaging System and an Atmospheric Sounder.

2. INSAT-3D, launched in 2013, provides vertical profiles of temperature (40 levels from surface to - 70 km), humidity (21 levels from surface to - 15 km) and integrated ozone from surface to top of the atmosphere. INSAT-3DR, the latest meteorological satellite built by ISRO, is similar to INSAT-3D.

3. The significant improvements incorporated in INSAT-3DR

Imaging in Middle Infrared band to provide night time pictures of low clouds and fog
  • Imaging in two Thermal Infrared bands for estimation of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) with better accuracy
  • Higher Spatial Resolution in the Visible and Thermal Infrared bands
4. INSAT-3DR also carries a Data Relay Transponder as well as a Search and Rescue Transponder.

5. INSAT-3DR has a lift-off mass of 2211 kg.

6. INSAT-3DR is based on ISRO's two Tonne Class platform (I-2K bus) employing light-weight structural elements like Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP).

7.The satellite has a solar array generating 1700 Watts of power.
