Back in 2015 when Maldives’ former National Defence Force (MNDF) Chief of Defence Major General Mohamed Shiyam visited Khulna Shipyard (KSY) he informed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that his country is interested to purchase patrol boats from Bangladesh for its coastguards. That time KSY built only five Padma class OPVs with Chinese assistance.

On 5th April, 2021, Major General Abdulla Shamaal, current Chief of Maldives' National Defence Force also visited KSY. Now KSY can build large patrol craft (LPC), inshore patrol vessel (IPV), high speed patrol vessel (HSV) and various other vessels for coast guard and navy. The shipyard is currently constructing five improved Padma class (Batch II) OPV for the Bangladesh Navy. With KSY's current capability Bangladesh surely has the potential to export locally made patrol vessel to Maldives and other nations with small budget for defense.

Local company Ocean Electrical Limited is involved in engineering, supply of electrical equipment, commissioning onboard and electrical installation & workmanship on various types of vessel for Bangladesh army, navy and coast guard. The company built a low-cost control panel console for new inshore patrol vessel (IPV) of Bangladesh Coast Guard. Recently PM and MoD both declared that project will be taken to locally develop a naval gun or manufacture with ToT along with other projects. Hopefully Bangladesh will be able to export patrol vessel and warship with more indigenous components in future. Previously Western Marine Shipyard Ltd supplied offshore patrol vessel to Kenyan Coast Guard.
