Continue trade with Pakistan: Chidambaram- Hindustan Times

Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Saturday said that India should continue its trade ties with Pakistan and other neighbouring countries.

Speaking to reporters here after laying the foundation stone of the integrated check post (ICP) at the international border with Pakistan, Chidambaram said that even though Pakistan had not reciprocated the most favoured nation (MFN) status India had given it, this did not mean that India should stop trade with Pakistan.

Chidambaram laid the foundation stone for the construction of an ICP at Attari, 25 km from Amritsar.

The ICP is located close to the India-Pakistan international border. The Attari ICP is the first one among 13 such to be constructed to boost trade with Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Nepal.

Addressing a gathering after the ceremony, the home minister said that the 21st century would be one of trade and commerce.

India is very cheaky. Canceling trade with Pakistan would hurt India a lot more. Pakistan SHOULD cancel the trade the next time India pisses us off, especially the transit rights.

Oh man you always get the topic of transit rights... You have to acknowledge one thing that if cutting off transit rights was so simple and easy it would have been done before..

Nope, it would not. Pakistan only provides one way transit rights to countries sending their goods to India and not vice versa. You would be hurting those countries like Afghanistan, CAR's etc apart from losing your revenue from that transit.

Cutting off your nose to spite the other!

This is called strategy ! Bravo ! I am always in favour of trade with Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal as they understand the potential. Pakistan will continue to remain poor and cripple its economy with such a mindset. India before Kargil started a bus journey to show the proximity to the world but unfortunately the message was lost. I would like my dear friend to patiently watch this video from (2010 World Economic Forum Davos)

If you have a limited attention span, watch from 17 mins and forward.

Please listen to the Banker from Pakistan and what he suggests India should do more to help Pakistan in trade to act a multipler to economic growth. You are suggesting the exact contradiction. Bravo!

Thats the decades old stance of India that doers trade and forget issues.. and this is what has been asserted by India yet again.. Pakistan wanted meaningful dialog that would lead towards the settlement of Kashmir Issue and India always turned away by saying, we need to have confidence building measures before going for settlement. I see India is gaining the ground it wanted and our forum members are appreciating as if our stand on Kashmir has been heard.
