RAWALPINDI: The District Bar Association (DBA), Rawalpindi, on Wednesday unanimously approved a resolution moved by a Rawalpindi lawyer regarding recovery of looted money from corrupt officers, including military personnel, by carrying out strict accountability and awarding of severe punishment.

The Bar held a protest and demanded arrest of corrupt officials, including the army generals. The resolution was moved by Muhammad Anwar Dar, Advocate, in the general body meeting of the Bar which was chaired by Lahore High Court Bar Association, Rawalpindi Bench, President Sheikh Ahsanuddin and DBA President Sajid Ilyas Bhatti.

The resolution was presented for debate. It was said that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani had violated the law and Constitution of the country by giving threatening statements against the judiciary and media on exposing corruption of generals. The lawyers also condemned the COAS’ statement.

The lawyers, during the meeting, demanded that an inquiry should be held in the contracts awarded to General Kayani’s brother in defence institutions.They said the Army instead of carrying out accountability of its corrupt officers, was defending them.

It was said in the resolution that the Supreme Court had started taking action against all institutions and corrupt persons, and all institutions were being questioned on performing their duties. This will hold the supremacy of law and Constitution, it added.

The lawyers’ community seems to up in arms again, this time against Pakistan’s armed forces. The resolution of Rawalpindi Bar to condemn the statement of army chief and IHC’s recent admission of a petition by a disgruntled ex-army petitioner give very serious indications. Not only the Taliban or US or India, even Pakistan’s legal community is out to discredit the armed forces when these forces are engaged in a serious war. While the anti-Pakistan media was very skillfully using Pakistan’s judicial system against the armed forces, the lawyers have, in a very crude manner, assumed the role of foot soldiers of the CJ. They are doing no service to rule of law or Pakistan’s national interest. They are doing no service even to the most controversial CJ of Pakistan’s history who is accused of many for playing to the gallery and getting the popularity through the obliging media. The masses at the grass-root level will remain deprived of justice and no amount of populist decision-making can alleviate their pain inflicted by the corrupt and insensitive executive and lower judiciary. I do not deny that army has been involved in unconstitutional moves previously and some generals are / were involved in corruption too and these bad apples should be dragged into the courts. But this current onslaught on the army by our media and some think tanks when we are engaged in 4th generation war and battling for our survival is something we all Pakistanis should be worried about. This is not normal and I can sense something fishy about it.

Exactly, Army should come out clean and set the precedence right - if Aslam Baig and Durrani are the culprits punish them along with those politicians.

But again, if I look at the history of my country, I see Army complicit in brining the country to this state. I've yet to see a general punished for his crimes - infact everyone walks away free from Pakistan with their crimes.

Why did you miss General Yehya's role in 1971 war who was the third President of Pakistan, and the military dictator from 1969 until the dissolution of East-Pakistan, in 16 December 1971... anyway it does tell how much you know about the history of your country. Never-mind.
