Congress popular among students and youth: Pilot

JAIPUR: PCC chief Sachin Pilot on Wednesday said Congress might have lost elections but it has always remained popular among the country's students and youth. He urged the youngsters to understand the country's issues, to consider politics as a social service and to inculcate accountability so that they do not have to fall back on promises.

Pilot was speaking at the cultural function and office inauguration of Rajasthan University Students Union (RUSU), which gave a clean sweep to NSUI last December after a gap of 12 years. The function was attended by a battery of Congress leaders like Haryana's former chief minister Bhoopendra Singh Hooda, sitting MLA and former Haryana speaker Kuldeep Sharma, former RUSU presidents and ex-MLAs Raghu Sharma and Pratap Singh Khachariawas, ex-MLA Rita Chaudhary, ex-MP Harish Chaudhary and NSUI president Roji M John.

In a veiled attack on the ruling BJP, Pilot asked the elected RUSU leaders to fulfill their electoral promises and work for student issues. "The country needs politics that has accountability. RU students have reposed faith in NSUI, so build your credibility by delivering on your promises," Pilot said, pointing to RUSU president Anil Chopra and his teammates. He cautioned, "In today's technologically advanced world, transparency cannot be denied and people cannot be misled."

The PCC chief stressed that majority of the country's population today comprised youngsters and, as such, their responsibility was greater. "My team (PCC executive) has around 60% members who would be barely 5-10 years older than you," Pilot told the RU students to underline Congress's commitment to promote young leadership.

Ex-CM Hooda addressed the students saying their support for NSUI indicated better future for the country. "You have not just elected NSUI, but have decided the political future of Rajasthan," the former Haryana CM said. He also talked about his 'natural affinity' for Rajasthan recalling his forefathers who hailed from Bikaner. "Successful men have had a vibrant student life. These RU results, for which you had to fight in the courts, will prove to be a milestone in Rajasthan's politics," Hooda said.

Former Haryana assembly speaker Sharma said his political training happened in RU when he was student of law here. He urged the students to shun politics that divided people on lines of religion and caste. Ex-MLA Raghu Sharma said Congress provided ample opportunities to youngsters to grow. "The previous Rajasthan assembly had nine MLAs who were RU presidents during their student life. Former MPs Mahesh Joshi (Jaipur) and Harish Chaudhary (Barmer) were also student leaders," said Sharma, who was chief whip in the previous assembly.

Ex-MLA Khachariawas emphasised that RUSU elections played a vital role in deciding the state and the country's political course. "Students do not go by political ideologies, but by the performances of the governments," Khachariawas said, suggesting that NSUI's sweep in RUSU was a vote on Raje government's performance. NSUI president John said RU students voted rejecting political forces that divided people and practiced negative politics
