Yeah, there are 250 Million in our country who are dirt poor. But that is not being discussed sir.
@Imran Rashid - Me a patriot too. :enjoy: But we are still just a regional power. Nowhere near being a super power. :(

In 1971 was your army killing terrorists in BD?

The refugees were pouring into WB and other NE states of India. India could not feed them and hence had to take a decision to end the conflict going on near its borders.
So you are saying that india will do the same coz as we are nowadays fighting terrorists in our country again.
We have also seen how indians were trying to save their terrorists by repeatedly violating loc

Different times, this time our economy is much better. We may shelter them for some time but the question is why would common people of Pakistan come as refugees to India?

.
Look mate we are not interested in india at a moment, we are just securing our national interest. So our recent visit to China or newly build up ties with Russia is not for geopolitical parity, it's solely of our own interest. And by saying that we should cut off from whole world inorder to eradicate terrorists, is also not the wise thing to say its sheer stupidity.

We have purchased helicopters from Russia for our own need and to tackle terrorists from our NW sides of Pakistan, it's not because of some sort of military competition or something.

I hope you do realise the chart that u posted showing poverty uses dollar as a yardstick for measuring poverty.....and i hope that i need not tell you that 2 dollars a day in Pakistan buys you enough to not be considered a poor person..thus u need to consider PPP terms for providing a uniform yardstick for comparing countries vis a vis Poverty....

I wish the competition could have been who produces good doctors and professionals, who has more schools, universities, hospitals, who cares more for its people, the region and helps others. But world is not run by my wishes.

You have every right to be a patriot (did you doubt it?) o_O

Look bro my intention is not to degrade any one or bash india, I am just trying to imply that poverty is there in every country. Poor people are living in every country so by taking it as an excuse to point fingers at some ones foreign affairs or its defence budget which is solely its internal matter, is completely not wise thing to do.
From the very start of this thread many indians were claiming that we should be more worried about terrorists instead of growing ties with other countries. Just tell me bro how can you tackle terrorists when you are totally isolated and don't have anything in hand to fight them with.

The writer is an economist and a former adviser to the Sindh chief minister on planning and development

US President Barack Obama’s visit to India as chief guest for the country’s Republic Day celebrations has evoked amusing reactions in Pakistan. Of course, there is peeve at the fact that the US president has chosen to visit India and bypass Pakistan. However, gone are the days when the world treated India and Pakistan on a par and foreign dignitaries considered it a diplomatic necessity to visit Islamabad when visiting New Delhi and vice versa.

Islamabad has accepted the situation as a fait accompli; however, American presidential visits remain an exception. Earlier, when former president Clinton visited India, Pakistani diplomats moved heaven and earth to implore him to add Pakistan to his itinerary; and he obliged with a four-hour visit.

Currently, the Pakistan Foreign Office has adopted a responsible position and refrained from any comment. A section of the media has, however, gone overboard with hysteria and exaggerated pique, particularly by overnight-born experts — ex-generals, stand-alone politicians, news analysts, etc. — who are smarting the most on account of President Obama’s India visit sans Pakistan.

Pakistan has to realise that world affairs are not carried out according to the figments of imagination of the country’s officially-sponsored intelligentsia. The nations of the world are engaged in serious relationships based on trade and security. No world leader will visit Pakistan if there is nothing substantial to talk about. No one has the time to add a day to their route merely to pander to Islamabad’s pretensions about parity with India.

Pakistan will have to accept hard facts and introspect the actual situation. And the fact is that Pakistan has little weight in the international arena, politically and economically. Politically, it is viewed as a nuisance at best and a threat to international security at worst. Economically, it is considered a basket case and a seemingly eternal candidate for bailouts. And it has little international sympathy for its claims of terrorism victimhood, as it is viewed as being bitten by the snakes it has itself bred in its backyard.

If Pakistan is desirous of being taken seriously by the world community, it will have to move on two fronts. One, it will have to be honest and serious about eliminating all forms of terrorism, including the mindset that considers terrorism legitimate. Pakistan cannot expect to be respected when murderers, a la Mumtaz Qadri, are treated as heroes and government prosecution lawyers are reluctant to proceed against him. Pakistan will also have to produce a new narrative on Kashmir, as the only audience for the old narrative is Pakistan itself.

Pakistan’s knee-jerk response to the emerging India-US strategic partnership is to adopt China as an alternative patron-saint. This move is abjectly unwise. Firstly, no one respects camp-followers of one power or the other. And secondly, reliance on Chinese shoulders to lean on may prove to be unstable as, after all, China, too, is cognisant of India’s rise and will not construct its regional foreign policy to suit the needs of a declining entity that is incessantly in a state of political and economic crisis.

The second front on which Pakistan will need to effect changes is to adopt economic and social development as the primary agenda of the state and second grade the external security agenda. It has to be accepted and incorporated — in belief and policymaking — in all policy corridors — that Pakistan’s security essentially lies in its economic strength and not in its nuclear arsenal or in military posturing. This reassessment will require significant restructuring of economic policy.

Pakistan can never compete with India in terms of its size, population and national income. If Pakistan’s per capita income is twice that of India and the poverty rate is half, a resultantly strong purchasing power will create a proportionately larger market size and the world will take the country seriously and treat it with respect. Pakistan’s balance of payments — sans foreign aid — will also have to generate the surpluses to be able to assist smaller neighbours like Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. These are achievable objectives if the necessary political will is mobilised.

Finally some sense full clean review from Pakistani writers. My stand is vindicated. Pakistan will be respected only if Pakistanis are prosperous with substantial income and stable government at the centre which really works for the people of Pakistan than towing PA lines. Still its not too late. Leave this failed idea of using proxies. Nations use these kind of proxies in secrecy. Once it's it's been exposed it will be counter productive .Defame the state. Better loss it. Move on from Kashmir. Which was not urs. Anyway when you become stronger you can wage war and try it in the future. That's should be the way forward.

World won't listen to your victim card anymore. All the super powers will have common sense to get rid of friendship which will rupture their integrity too. So time to act wise.

Leave today. Just think about the difference between India and Pakistan in 10 years .It will be like comparing Nuclear power north Korea and Super power China. Just my thoughts on this articles which deserves claps and positive rating . :)

A very nice article. But liberal sentiments wont get him the kind of support which is the need of the hour for pakistan. The growth and prosperity angle is definitely not so enthusiastic. May be a technocrat with majority backing may try and do some good change. poverty is not a challenge to one nation alone especially as now the world is more of multipolar nature. Ppl should not forget whats happening atm with greece and probable catastrophic impact to all economies of this planet. So its for best interest that diversified economic interests with impetus on sustainable and economical energy needs dominate the agenda of elective representatives. No one says dont spend on defence but spend as per your needs not react with neighbor bought a new TV syndrome

I do expect almost max PDF ppl not accepting authors views. But believe me for future to be glorious, we got to accept the bitter reality..

@Norwegian : Bro nice articles you post.. thanks a ton.. you definitely deserve much more than a +1 positive rating for this.

Absolutely illogical reason. So indian army created mukti bahini for feeding refugees???Didnt seem like it.

Its not Military its corruption which is eating it up and yes economy has to and will improve but these liberals are only good at eating shit of their daddy USA and INDIA
If you think political corruption is less than corruption in Armed Forces ! WELL U ARE COMPLETELY WRONG . Arms deals are more prong for corruptions , kick backs , local authorities corruption etc . You need to view it in a wider angle . Than thinking narrowly

It's not India, it's Pakistan. We know our army very well sir, so don't need to tell us what's wrong or what's right.
Honestly you don't have any idea about how corrupt our politicians really are

Too much to digest aint it, not surprised by another Pakistani who does not know why their country got split.

What? Is IT industry a failure in India?
he can only dream of it failing, there was a flat growth due to the economic depression but things have already picked up in here.

What? Is IT industry a failure in India?

That is something new to me too....going by all indicators available as released by NASSCOMM and also the annual profits of the IT behemoths and taking into account the sheer number of successful startups i would disagree with him...but if he is talking about the longevity of IT boom then he might be right in about 20 years time....
