It is basically a Deep Sea Survey vessel used for Oceanographic Research.
The task of survey vessels is to map the bottom, benthic zone, full water column, and surface for the purpose of:

• Hydrography
• General oceanography
• Marine habitats
• Salvage
• Dredging Planning
• Marine archaeology

PN operated Behr Paima since 1982, which was bought from Japan for the same job.
The ship, since its induction, has carried-out extensive survey of Pakistan's coastal areas on different scales. The ship partially surveyed the south-eastern sea-front of Pakistan that comprises Indus River Delta creeks. However, sea area west and south of Karachi has been thoroughly surveyed. The ship also provided valuable data for building of Jinnah Naval Base channel in Ormara. Pakistan’s deep water port at Gwadar was also planned based on data rendered by the ship. The corresponding series of charts on different scales have been published for the entire coast of Pakistan based on ships surveyed data. The ship has also conducted dredging surveys, wreck search, north markings, tidal data collections, and detached surveys etc.

It was n still is untill induction of Chinese Submarines , Type 054A/P frigates n Turkish Milgems e.t.c , technological / Capacity / Budget wise less modern or equipped as compared to Army , PAF .

Pakistan’s latest ship ‘Behr Masah’ to help find natural reserves in deep sea

Pak Navy's latest survey ship was built by China's Dajin Shipyard.

‘Behr Masah' is equipped with modern survey equipment that could help Pakistan develop its maritime sector.

Pakistan Navy commissioned on Monday survey ship ‘Behr Masah' in its naval fleet, enhancing the naval research and sailing capabilities of the Pakistan Navy.

Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi was the guest of honour for the commissioning of new survey ship 'Behr Masah' in an event held in Karachi.

As per the Navy spokesperson, the research ship is equipped with modern survey equipment that will play an important role in the search of natural reserves in the maritime territories of the country
