KARACHI: Investigations began into the missing containers case on the orders of the Supreme Court on Monday, Express News reported.

The missing containers case, which saw the disappearance of over 19,000 containers allegedly carrying arms, ammunition, liquor and other goods will be investigated by commission led by Ramzan Bhatti.

“During the day-long investigation of the commission, access to certain floors of the Sarawan Custom House, Karachi was blocked,” said Ehtisham Mufti, Express News correspondent, who was reporting on the first day of the commission’s investigations.

“Sources said that officials present at Karachi Port Trust, Port Qasim, Terminal and other container terminals will be investigated and evidence will be collected,” reported Ehtisham.

As part of the investigation, DG Rangers will also be questioned.

It will also be determined that of the number of containers which went missing, how many were NATO containers.

Earlier, a bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had sought a report on the case.

The bench had summoned Customs chief collector Muhammad Yahya, who said he had no knowledge about the arms being smuggled into the country, and had insisted that the monitoring system had been made strict.
