Commemoration of '75th Year of Establishment of Azad Hind Government'

The 75th anniversary of the formation of Azad Hind Government on 21st October, 2018, at the Red Fort, Delhi. The commemoration of this significant historical event would also see the presence of Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State for Culture(I/c),Shri Chandra Kumar Bose, nephew of Netaji, Shri Lalti Ram, INA Veteran and Brig. R.S. Chikkara.


The Azad Hind Government, founded on 21st October, 1943 was inspired by Neta ji Subhash Chandra Bose who was the leader of Azad Hind Government and also the Head of State of this Provisional Indian Government-in-exile. It was a part of the freedom movement, originating in 1940s outside India with a purpose of allying with Axis powers to free India from British rule. The existence of the Azad Hind Government gave a greater legitimacy to the independence struggle against the British. Pertinently, the role of Azad Hind Fauj or the Indian National Army (INA) had been crucial in bequeathing a much needed impetus to India’s struggle for Independence.

Red Fort to remain closed for Public for 3 days

Archaeological Survey of India(ASI), organisation under Ministry of Culture, Government of India, has ordered that the Red Fort, Delhi shall remain closed for the general public and visitors in view of VVIP movement in Ramleela and Redfort on 19th, 20th and 21st of October, till the function in over.

Formation of the Provisional Government of Azad Hind, mobilisation of the Indian communities for armed struggle was stepped up. Many Indian civilians from Malaya, Thailand and Burma responded enthusiastically. Others contributed money and gold generously to the INA Fund. The gold came mostly from women who readily gave up their jewellery while wealthy Indian families donated large sums of money after attending Bose’s rallies and meetings. Other forms of contributions included clothing, foodstuffs and other supplies that the INA could use.

By April 1944, the Azad Hind Bank was established in Rangoon to manage the overwhelming donations from the Indian communities.

On 21 October 1943, Bose announced the formation of the Provisional Government of Azad Hind (Free India), with himself as the Head of State, Prime Minister and Minister of War.

On 5 August 1943, Subhas Chandra Bose addressed the INA soldiers at the Padang. He questioned if they felt “Jai Hind” and “Chalo Dhili” as part of them as the slogans were part of himself. The response of the soldiers was overwhelming and electrifying.

The award will be announced on January 23, Netaji’s birthday.

A national award in the name of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose will be given every year to police personnel who do excellent work in rescue and relief operations during any kind of disaster.

The announcement came on the 75th anniversary of Bose’s declaration of the formation of India’s first independent government — the Azad Hind Government on October 21, 1943.

“From this year onwards, we will give an award in the name of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose to police personnel who do exemplary work while rescuing and providing relief to people during the time of any disaster,” after dedicating to the nation a police memorial and museum in New Delhi.

The award will be announced on January 23, Netaji’s birthday.

The country cannot forget the services rendered by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel in rescue and relief works during the time of any disaster.

“These NDRF and SDRF personnel are our brave policemen. They are from police forces. The country will not forget their bravery, dedication and sacrifice. Many people even do not know who they are, when they rescue people and provide relief during the collapse of a building, when there is a fire or when there is a train accident,” he said in a voice choked with emotions.

The NDRF and SDRF are constituted with personnel from the Central paramilitary forces and State police organisations respectively.

Sugata Bose has curated an exhibition in Kolkata to mark the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Azad Hind government

Netaji Bhavan in Kolkata is hosting an exhibition of more than 60 black-and-white photographs to mark the 75th anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose announcing the Azad Hind government.

The iconic two-storied house is the place from which Netaji gave the slip to the British during his “great escape” in a vintage Wanderer car, which is also on display. The exhibition titled 1943: One Year, One Man and a World at War, has been curated by Sugata Bose, Netaji’s grand-nephew and a professor of history at Harvard University.

It highlights significant events such as the setting up of the Indian National Army and, later, the Azad Hind government. “1943 was the most glorious year of Netaji’s life. In January, he was stuck in Europe and by December he was standing on Indian soil in Andaman having proclaimed the Azad Hind government on October 21 in Singapore,” Prof. Bose told The Hindu. The exhibition draws heavily from Sugata Bose’s father Sisir Kumar Bose’s diary of 1943.

Precious diary
It was Sisir Kumar Bose, Netaji’s nephew, who drove him during his great escape from Kolkata to Gomoh railway station between January 16-18, 1941.

Prof. Bose said that the photographs in the exhibition were painstakingly collected by his father from Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Burma [now Myanmar] over 50 years. The photograph where Netaji announces the Provisional Government of Free India at Singapore’s Cathay Theatre on October 21, 1943, is among the iconic pictures at the exhibition.

Photographs on display include those of the first Cabinet of the INA government; INA soldiers marching past Netaji and the leader reviewing troops including the Rani Lakshmi Bai regiment. The exhibition also has the last known photograph of Netaji at Saigon Airport, on August 17, 1945. Netaji’s visit to Japan in 1943 and his visit to the Cellular Jail in the Andamans are also recalled.

“It is good that we are celebrating 75 years of the Azad Hind government but it is important to note the significance of this house in Netaji’s life. Had the Mahaniskraman (great escape) not happened from this very house, there would have been no INA,” said Krishna Bose, chairperson of the Netaji Research Bureau that operates from the house.

She added that the Indian National Army may have suffered a military defeat but it was a political victory that paved the way to the end of the British empire.

“Those who do not have their own ideas and idols, and have zero contribution to the National Movement, are trying to attribute and appropriate the legacy of our Freedom Fighters, in an attempt to be perceived nationalist. Today, Modi desperately tried to do the same,” claimed Mr. Singhvi.

Referring to the old letters of Netaji, Mr. Singhvi claimed that he had referred to the Hindu Mahasabha as a national organisation.

“Today, the VHP and the BJP are praising Netaji for his military endeavours to liberate India, but their ideological ancestors had done the opposite. When Netaji was revamping the Azad Hind Fauj in Japan and Gandhi ji had given the ‘Quit India’ call, the Muslim Leauge was hand-in-glove with the British. The Hindu Mahasabha under Vinayak Savarkar’s leadership organised recruitment camps for the Azad Hind Fauj,” Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi also pointed out that Jawaharlal Nehru was one of the lawyers defending Netaji and members of the Indian National Army (INA) during the famous INA trials. “Was there any person from the RSS to support Netaji,” Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi asked.

“A desperate BJP is trying to rewrite history and create an imagined rivalry between Sardar Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru and between Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Nehru. It has used auspicious occasions for these cheap political tricks,” Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi alleged.
