CM Punjab posing for picture while supervising water drainage !

There are provisions for drains in all major projects, but over time, these are all choked with garbage and plastic bags thrown about by the people themselves who then suffer when the rains come.

These projects were built a little over 6-12 months ago...can't expect them to get choked this quickly. Islamabad is still going strong.

Nevermind the inner city, main roads are breaking apart!

Have you ever read the well lets just say the planning pipelines of any of the projects? None even include drainage nor sewage provisions...You can say it happens in Corrupt situations!

He thinking of saying municipal drainage incharge you are fired, municipal incharge you are fired, flood water you are fired too
This incompetent idiot should fire himself first for being direct responsible for Minhaj Massacre.

The main culprit is plastic garbage that blocks flow. And the people who throw them. IBD is much cleaner than LHE.

Its not difficult to have a mechanism to create a cannal that can move the water out of areas of city to remote areas outside of city

Lahore and Karachi need a major underground sewer update, but that would be a huge undertaking.

1) Pakistan never had floods in it's history. This is first time we have floods. I am sure the holy men, the saviors of democracy and constitution whether in or out of the holy parliament will make sure this will not happen again. Teams will be sent to China, Japan, USA and many other countries to find the best solution and implement it and finish it within a year from now.

Which sentence fits best keeping in view our holy constitution and holiness of the parliament which we hear about a lot, which has always been used to fulfill and needs of the citizens and to delivery all their rights at their door steps and provide protection to them and their property from all sorts of calamities.

Oh you have no idea...for a ganja it is too difficult to even think about a penny going for the use of something good for Pakistan which will last long term enough so that people wont revote them for "development"

All major projects do include provisions for drainage. They are not maintained when people throw garbage everywhere, and rainwater carries them to the drains which then get blocked.

Government sent a delegation to Turkey last year to study Istanbul’s water and sanitation system. The team included the Lahore commissioner and some other officials who met the officials of Istanbul municipality and its subsidiary, ISKI. In September last, Turkish experts representing ISKI visited Lahore and studied Wasa infrastructure.
“In December, Wasa sent necessary maps and drawings and data on the water and sanitation system to Turkish experts to suggest improvement in the system,” the official added.

Another official said Turkish experts Mehmet Aygun, Fatih Yildiz and Dr Ibrahim Karali had suggested Wasa to specify nullahs to drain sewage and rainwater separately so that they did not choke during rains.

They had also suggested the construction of new nullahs as per needs besides urging Wasa not to rely on the decades-old combined sewerage system. They also asked Wasa to install water treatment plants in the city, saying wastewater in the developed countries was always treated and used for irrigation rather than diverting it to the rivers. They also stressed on educating people to dispose of domestic waste properly rather than letting it flow on roads and streets. The suggestions were never taken up for consideration, he said.

The official also quoted the Punjab government’s report submitted in the Supreme Court for its efforts in improving the city’s water and sanitation system.

The Supreme Court took suo moto notice over Wasa’s failure to drain out the rainwater from its Lahore registry in November 2013.

According to the report, the government stated a phased plan worth Rs9.2 billion for rehabilitation of the city drainage system had been devised. In phase-1, the government planned to rehabilitate Birdwood drain, Central drain and Cantonment drain from Multan Road to Babu Sabu.

He said despite visits by the Turkish experts and government’s tall claims, no measure was taken to implement the plan. The official said the government had also established Lahore Water and Sanitation Company but it had yet to start working. About the losses to roads due to rains, an official of the City District Government of Lahore (CDGL) said the engineering staff repaired the roads affected due to rains and the increasing traffic loads. Last year, the CDGL carried out patchwork of 20 roads which included Main Boulevard (Gulberg, Siddiq Trade Centre to Kalma Chowk), Park Lane Road, Centre Point to Cavalry Ground, Zahoor Elahi Road, GT Road (Ik Moria Pul to Daroghawala), Shalimar Link Road, Canal Bank to Shalamar Bagh, The Mall, PGM Office to Mian Mir Pul, Edgerton Road (Shimla Pahari to Punjab Assembly), GPO Chowk to Australia Building, Pajian to Sundar Road, Sundar to Manga Road, Link Road (Raiwind) leading to the Tableeghi Ijtima site, Sundar to Raiwind, Manga to Raiwind, Barki Road and Bhani Road.

He said similarly the LDA too repaired many roads in its controlled areas. The official said unless the government rehabilitated city’s sewerage and drainage systems, the road to a beautiful Lahore would remain incomplete.

How much garbage can one throw on a major road in 6 mths? and what kind of sewage system gets clogged in 6mths? Was it built for a village or a city?

I believe you didnt visit the thread where I was voicing out about water works, sewage and drainage capacities in Pakistan....someone posted the draft for the project and no where did I see drainage or sewage even stated...unless they build it on auto pilot it is not on paper! And if they do build it...they need to realize to maintain it!!

THAT IS IF they do build it...and for 7 yrs there has been alot of projects in Punjab...so according to you the drainage system should have been better now coz provisions for drainage with each project means a really good system by now....so why on earth is Lahore looking worse than 7 yrs ago?!

Did they make CLOSED UP DRAINS you know...forgot to dig some to make them look like drains coz the money was used up in remodeling the waistline to make the stomach look like a miniature mountain??!

Agree, then what policy did we have to improve the standard of living of the common man through education?

Also, if the authorities were sincere and pro active the blockages can be handled through timely and periodic inspections. What is the municipality for then?

Have you actually walked about the streets of Lahore and see what people throw around?

Maintenance is an important aspect that is routinely ignored.

All that will take many billions of dollars to make.

@Syed.Ali.Haider do you mean to tell me there was provision for drainage but yet the system they have been making for 7 yrs under SHABAZ SHARIFF still looks a decade old? Man what does he use to make those drains??

Wow...nov. 2013 they were told off and guess what 10 mths down the road still no one registered that something should be done!

So where did the money go? Buying cheap stuff or never ever implemented?

billion dollar question answered:

Do they mean to tell me that there has been no increase in traffic in America or any country in the West coz their roads dont expire in 6mths due to INCREASING TRAFFIC LOADS!

In UAE they treat the sewerage water for landscaping purposes. the water is used for irrigation of public gardens and parks and road side greenery and the sludge produced during the process is transformed into a sort of manure again used for irrigation purposes.

Only if the sewerage water goes abouve the handling capacity of the sewerage processing plants it is then flowed towards the sea through pipes.

Also before rains, all the municipality departments are put on alert days before it rains.
