LAHORE - Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has approved Rs one billion funds for the establishment of an international standard information technology university in the provincial capital whose initial campus has been set up at Arfa Karim Software Technology Park.
Presiding over a meeting regarding establishment of IT university on Wednesday, the chief minister said the first IT university will enable the new generation to play role in the national development and progress by acquiring modern knowledge.
The promotion of information technology is also of paramount importance for the transparent utilisation of funds, elimination of corruption and good governance, the chief minister added.
While giving in principle approval to the funds of one billion rupees for the university, the chief minister said the future of the country was linked with information technology.
He said establishment of IT University at Dera Rakh Chahil in Lahore, in collaboration with Turkish university METU, will bring about a revolution in IT sector and lead to availability of modern educational facilities to students.
Setting up a committee comprising planning and development chairman, higher education and finance secretaries, the chief minister said the committee would look after the matters regarding funds of the IT university.
Earlier, Punjab Information Technology Board Chairman Dr Umar Saif gave a detailed briefing regarding the pace of progress on the project and its different affairs. He said the process of admission of the students in the initial campus of the university had been completed and the classes would soon be started.
He said an agreement had been reached with the Punjab Educational Endowment Fund for the provision of scholarships to the brilliant students.
Chairman Punjab IT Board Dr. Umar Saif, PML-N leader Ch. Jaffar Iqbal, Chairman Planning & Development, Secretaries of Higher Education and Finance and DG LDA attended the meeting.
