Clashes break out in Rajouri after India-Pakistan match

Rajouri, Sept 25: At least 35 people including some senior police officers were injured in the clashes which broke out between two communities in Rajouri district after India defeated Pakistan in the Twenty-20 cricket final in South Africa on Monday night. The authorities have ordered closure of all educational institutions in the district while troops have been kept on alert to prevent escalation of violence.

Eyewitnesses said the tension erupted in the town at around 8.45 pm when hundreds of activists belonging to a particular community took out a procession to celebrate India’s victory over Pakistan at Johannesburg in South Africa.

After marching in the market, the processionists gathered at the main gate of Jamia Masjid Rajouri near Town Hall and fired crackers, besides raising objectionable and provocative slogans. In the meantime, the people who were performing ‘Taravi’ prayers in the mosque came out and asked the processionists to move from there and let them perform the prayers.

“But they continued with the sloganeering and fired more crackers. This was objected by the other group, resulting in clashes between the two groups,” Shafqat Wani, one of the eyewitnesses, told Greater Kashmir.

In the initial round of clashes, about half a dozen people from both the sides got injured. However, police immediately swung into action and took over control of the town. The injured included Superintendent Police Rajouri Tej Ram Katoch, SHO Rajouri Tajinder Singh and one more officer.

Clashes again broke out on Tuesday morning between one group and police near Police Chowki Rajouri, causing injuries to 25 people including some policemen. Police used batons, lobbed teargas shells and fired some gun shots in the air to disperse the mob. The clashes took place despite the imposition of Section 144 in the town.

SP Rajouri, Tej Ram Katoch said, “When the procession was stopped by police near chowki they started throwing stones on our men. On this we used mild force to disperse the mob. The situation is under control and we have kept Army stand by to take over the town if needed. The police has also taken nearly half a dozen miscreants into custody after the fresh clashes.”
In a separate clash, five students were reportedly injured in the clashes between the two groups in Government Post Graduate College Rajouri. Soon after the incident, the District Magistrate ordered closure of all educational institutions in the town.

Reports reaching from Sunderbani and Nowshehra towns said the situation was tense but no untoward incident has been reported.

Speaking to Greater Kashmir, Deputy Commissioner Rajouri, Rafiq Ahmed Sheikh appealed both the communities to Maintain calm and harmony and defeat the designs of “some miscreants who have their agendas hidden under religious grabs.”

Meanwhile, reports from Reasi district said a group of people carried out a huge procession in front of a mosque where people were busy in offering ‘Taravi’ prayers soon after India defeated Pakistan in South Africa. Later some persons forced entry into the mosque, leading to a scuffle between the two groups, reports added.

According to DC Reasi, Sanjeev Verma the situation is under control. “There was some misunderstanding between two communities. The issue has now been sorted out,” Verma told Greater Kashmir over phone.

True! They simply don't admit that there are so many muslims that feel it is hard to be loyal to India because of the inacceptence and discrimination against them... even though every muslim in India that I know does not like the way muslims are treated. Many of my cousins and family members in Lucknow and Hyderabad were supporting Pakistan in the cricket match...

I wonder how many muslims would have been supporting Pakistan in Kashmir...

Yeah and then the police does not even protect the muslims from Hindu fanatics! When these people seek help from the government and police they are ignored and treated as second-class citizens and as if it does not matter what they say or believe...

Then the Indians come to this site and moan and make stupid comments like

"Why do the Kashmiris want independence? How stupid can they be? Don't they understand that they should be a part of India?"

...Yeah be a part of India and continue suffering the bias and the dscrimination that they have always been suffering!

I don't think its any wonder that so many Kashmiris find Pakistan as the only escape from Indian suppresion and poor treatment... and in the end those people who shift to Pakistan tend to be extremely loyal to their newly accepted nation and are ready to give anything to the nation that freed them! Its India thats losing out if they continue to treat muslims in this way... No One Else!

Yeah people shot off on a tangent about Pakistani "mentality" just because the Pakistani captain thanked obvious supporters. What do they have to say about the Hindu mentality which has to go to the mosque and taunt Muslims for winning against Pakistan...

Haha what they don't get is they are indirectly just saying "You are Pakistanis", to all the Muslim Kashmiris. Which is what WE are saying.

Cricket revelry takes an ugly turn, situation tense

At least 25 people were injured in communal clashes in Rajouri

Rajouri: As the rest of the country celebrated India’s victory in the Twenty20 World Cup, the revelry took an ugly turn here as communal riots broke out resulting in at least 25 people being injured.

The situation remained tensed but under control on Tuesday . There are conflicting versions of the reasons for the tension. Muslim community members allege that on Monday a group of people started bursting crackers outside the mosque near the bus stand in the heart of the town.

Repeated requests were made by devotees not to disturb them. As the requests fell on deaf ears, an argument started between the two communities triggering clashes.

Hindu community members allege that without any provocation members of their community were attacked. As both sides came to blows, the police intervened. Several police personnel including Superintendent of Police T R Katoch were injured in the process.

Rajouri-Poonch DIG, P.R. Minhas, told The Hindu that the police promulgated an order under Section 144, whereby, no group would be allowed to act in a manner which threatens the law and order of the place. Prohibitory orders have been imposed and CRPF and paramilitary forces have been deployed in the town .

Mr. Minhas said, “We have registered a case and investigations are going on. Our top priority is to maintain peace in the area and bring the situation to normality.”
