You don't know much about the history of China and Southeast Asian countries, so you don't understand the trust of Southeast Asian people (except Vietnamese) in China.

China and Southeast Asian countries have been neighbors for thousands of years, and China has almost always been the stronger side. But China has never invaded Southeast Asia (except Vietnam, a subsidiary of China), even in the 15th century when the Chinese Navy ruled the world's oceans.

As for western countries, do you know what western countries have done since they contacted Southeast Asian countries? colonization. This is a bad behavior that the Chinese people have been unwilling to do for thousands of years.

Although there is the South China Sea issue, people in Southeast Asia generally believe that China will not solve the issue through war. Moreover, countries in the South China Sea are generally hostile to Vietnam, not China.
