Chinese Urban Workers' Pay Soared 11% to USD12,000 Last Year

(Yicai Global) May 14 -- Urban workers at non-private companies in China, including
collective and foreign-owned businesses, saw an annual wage gain of 11 percent last year to an average CNY82,461 (USD12,000), official figures show, with the information technology field remaining the best paid.

The rate of increase was 1 percentage point faster than in 2017, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. For staff in private firms, the increase was 8.3 percent, 1.5 point more than the previous year, to an average CNY49,575. The rate was 6.1 percent after taking inflation into account.

The highest pay went to IT workers in non-private firms who earned an average CNY147,678 each, a 10.9 percent increase, and CNY76,326 at private firms, which was an 8.4 percent gain. Finance and scientific research and technical services ranked second and third.

Emerging industries have seen swift wage growth. Research and experimental development expenses jumped 11.6 percent nationwide in 2018, contributing to wage growth in scientific research, said Meng Canwen, deputy director of the NBS' Department of Population and Employment Statistics.

New business models represented by e-commerce continue to expand at a rapid pace. Online sales of retail goods exceeded CNY7 trillion (USD1 trillion) last year, an increase of 25.4 percent, driving wage hikes in the wholesale, retail and telecoms sectors, Meng said.

People demand a higher quality of life when their wages rise, which further promotes development of the culture, sports, healthcare and recreation sectors, he added.

The NBS survey samples included 1.68 million non-private and 739,000 private employers.

Nuclear deal between China, Russia worth $1.7b

Chinese and Russian nuclear companies will sign a deal worth more than $1.7 billion for the No.3 and No.4 reactors at the Xudapu Nuclear Plant using Russian technology, accelerating Sino-Russian cooperation on nuclear energy.

Construction of two reactors at the Xudapu Nuclear Plant in Huludao, Northeast China's Liaoning Province, is scheduled to start in October 2021 and August 2022, China National Nuclear Corp (CNNC) said Monday in an announcement. It did not specify when the contract will be signed.

Under the deal, Russia will have overall responsibility for design, while China will handle the design of specific details including the general layout, conventional island and balance of plant.

Both reactors will use the Russian-designed VVER-1200 / V491 reactor device, with a thermal power of 3,212 megawatts. The power station is set to operate for 60 years.

"The China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination has pushed bilateral cooperation in various fields. The cooperation helps China gain experience while helping Russia improve its technology in building third-generation nuclear plants, which benefits both countries," Han Xiaoping, chief information officer at China5e.com, a website of an energy information and consulting service, told the Global Times on Tuesday.

Lin Boqiang, director of the China Center for Energy Economics Research at Xiamen University, told the Global Times on Tuesday that the application of the VVER-1200 technology will add to China's status as a testing ground for the world's third-generation nuclear technologies, and put the Russian technology in competition with China's third-generation Hualong One technology.

Cooperation with Russia on nuclear energy will provide guidelines to China. "It's more efficient to learn from others and develop our own third-generation nuclear plant simultaneously, while at the same time reducing costs," he added.

The Xudapu Nuclear Plant, together with the Tianwan Nuclear Plant in East China's Jiangsu Province, are part of a 20-billion-yuan ($2.9 billion) nuclear deal signed in June between CNNC and Rosatom State Corp Engineering Division, the Russian state nuclear company. The deal is the biggest bilateral cooperation project involving nuclear energy, according to CNNC.

Under the deal, the two parties will jointly build four VVER-1200 nuclear reactors.

As of November 1, 2017, the number of nuclear power units in operation in the Chinese mainland reached 37, ranking third globally, according to data from the Chinese National Energy Administration.

China also has 19 nuclear power units under construction.

China's urbanites experienced faster income growth for 2018: report

Source:Global Times Published: 2019/5/14

The National Bureau of Statistic (NBS) released a report on the average yearly incomes of Chinese jobholders in 2018. The data revealed that salaries grew faster than 2017 despite the economic slowdown.

In the public sector, the average annual salary for urban employees rose by 11 percent to 82,461 yuan ($12,061), representing a faster growth rate of 1 percentage point than 2017.

In private sectors, the annual average salary stood at 49,575 yuan, up 8.3 percent year-on-year and 1.5 percentage points faster than the previous year.

"The average salary of China's urban employees grew faster in 2018 due to better corporate profitability and solid performance in the Chinese economy," said Meng Canwen, deputy chief of the population and employment statistics bureau, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

Meng attributed the accelerated salary increases to the 2017 measures the country had taken amid complex situations at home and abroad to stabilize growth, advance reform, adjust structure, benefit people, and safeguard against economic risks.

The positive effects of the measures continue to unfold as the national economy expands with overall stable employment and rising corporate profits, which created a foundation for the wage increases, Meng said.

The NBS report also revealed the highest-paying sectors which include IT (147,678 yuan), finance (129,837 yuan), and scientific research and technological services (123,343 yuan) in the non-private sectors.

For staff in private firms, the increase was 8.3 percent, 1.5 point more than the previous year, to an average CNY49,575.

So workers in the public sector earns almost twice of that in the private sector? o_O

Every single year over 10% salary increase, really hate it. Give us a break, a big chunk of earnings just go to the wages.

That's true. The average income of people working in state-owned enterprises has been twice that of people working in private enterprises for many years.

And employees working in state-owned enterprises generally do not work overtime.

So many people still prefer to work in state-owned enterprises. But state-owned enterprises lack high-paying jobs.

Yep. This is the real increase... unlike in the jungle, it costs $80,000 to buy a junk car...
I bet this @Viva_Viet does not have a car, and have to walk everyday to find a computer and spread garbage to earn his million dung/month:rofl: ..

There are many companies in China that pay this salary.
My father is working in a state-owned enterprise and earns far more than that.
But for Vietnamese, maybe you haven't seen so much money in your lifetime.:disagree:

$4000-8000/month for a special talent is not a high salary.

Take a casual example. Alibaba has enrolled many talented students with a million yuan($146k)/year salary in university.o_O
That's 阿里星.

It is no longer news that Chinese enterprises attract talented people with high salaries.

That's weird. Generally the private sector is more efficient than the public sector and I believe that should be true in China as well. The private sector is exposed to more competition, less bureaucracy, less red-tape than the public sector, but of course it has lesser 'connections' and 'access to contracts' if you know what I mean. Still, the discrepancy shouldn't be twice as large.

At the end of the day, it's taxpayers working in the private sector who are paying the public sector.

Two main reasons, 1.) the private sector contains a lot of low end jobs. 2.) the data of salaries in private sectors are difficult to collect, for example, some construction workers are paid day by day. No one knows how much they earn per month or per year on average.
