NEW DELHI, INDIA, Feb. 10 (ChinaMil) -- The External Affairs Ministry of India recently gave notice to Wang Qi, a nearly 80-year-old Chinese veteran who has been stranded in India for 54 years, and his family to deal with their Indian passport formalities.

Wang Qi and his son planned to fly back to China on Feb 11, 2017. "The thing I missed most from my hometown is the handmade noodles," Wang said.

In 1963 after the Sino-Indian War, Wang Qi got lost in the woods and the Indian military caught and imprisoned him for seven years on the charge of "espionage". After he was released from prison, Wang was arranged to live in a remote area in India. There are several veterans from Wang’s division under the former PLA Lanzhou Military Area Command in 1963 are from China's Shaanxi Province. These veterans, aged 75 on average, gather together almost every year to recall their memorable years in the army.

Chen Qungeng, a 76-year-old Chinese veteran, used to serve in the same troop unit with Wang Qi. He recalled that their troop unit, stationed in Xining City, west China's Qinghai Province, was of a division level with several independent battalions under it. Wang Qi was in the No.2 Company of the Independent Engineer Battalion.

“The No.2 Company was also called the Road and Bridge Company because they were in charge of the bridge-building work during the march,” recalled Chen.

Chen remembered that the disappearance of soldier Wang Qi was a big event across the division at that time. They search all over the mountains, but it was in vain.

However, the Chinese embassy in India has been making unremitting efforts to help Wang Qi return to his hometown.

The Chinese embassy aired its opinion on the internet on Feb 1, 2017, saying that the embassy had been aware of this issue and maintained close contacts with Wang and his family, as well as competent departments of India.

The embassy showed sympathy for Wang’s sufferings and has always provided help. It is believed that under the joint efforts from both India and China, the issue will be brought to a satisfactory settlement on the precondition of showing respect for the wishes of Wang Qi, according to the embassy.

Reporter called the Chinese embassy in India on the afternoon of February 3 to get the latest information on the issue. The embassy staff said the statement made on February 1 was the latest announcement and currently they were coordinating.

The Pension and Preferential Treatment Office of the Department of Civil Affairs of China's Shaanxi Province said on February 3 that they have been noticing media coverage on this issue recently. The department said it will provide as much help as it can for the veteran.

A section chief surnamed Yang from the secretariat division of Bureau of Civil Affairs of Xianyang City in China's Shaanxi Province said they have arranged the proper departments to verify the information. If the information proves to be true after investigation, the bureau will grant pension and preferential treatment for Wang Qi based on national policies after his return to hometown.

Sun Chunlong, president of Shenzhen Longyue Charitable Foundation, told reporter on February 3 that the foundation convened a meeting that very day and decided the foundation will work to get Wang Qi back from India as soon as possible. All the costs will be covered by the foundation. The old man may return to his hometown as early as this spring.

Wang Qi was born in Xuezhainan Village, Xuelu Township, Qian County of Shaanxi Province. The village head said recently that they heard many years ago that Wang Qi was stranded in India.

If the Wang Qi comes back one day, the village will offer him the same treatment as the other villagers, and allot a homestead to ensure that the old man will live his remaining years comfortably in his hometown, added the village head.

Pleased to learn the eventual happy-ending arrangement for this octogenarian veteran. What a long journey of life. I think that I watched a CCTV coverage on this guy not long ago, perhaps within the last three months. Or some other Chinese veteran living in India !? Hmm, my memory ain't so faithful.

Reminds me of that soviet soldier who stayed in Afghanistan.

I wonder if there are any Pakistani soldiers in Bangladesh.

To my knowledge no Pakistani soldier dare to Stay back all return.

Why didn't the Indians just let him go back to China? 5 decades is a longtime.
Yes he should be return back to China by India. Humanity should stay first before any formalities /political difference.

He is not in captivity here. Rather he is settled here & has wife n children here. That was kept deliberately hidden in Chinese article for particular purpose. Perhaps free Google might help you in getting real information.

He is now part Indian himself having a well settled family here. Please search in Google, there is extensive details shared by India unlike the propaganda article written by CPC news site few days back. Thank you.

First of all, as the OP it is not my interest to play the blame game here. The humanity part is what caught my attention about this story. And to be fair CCTV just broadcast this veteran along with his Indian wife, camera showed his home in India, his family, thus viewers knew this guy is somehow settled in India. I got knowing this development from the broadcast, just managed to read the article later.

I simply have no interest to dig in the "dirty details" why the back-home-trip just happens now, what blocked him from getting the required traveling document (if he has no traveling doc he can't make a trip beyond India) or does he have financial constraint to afford such trip, which side has fault to deny him such trip much earlier: IND / CHN / both IND & CHN , was he stateless at some time and so on. I am aware that you replied to some rather intriguing questions here... but let us keep this article in the spirit of people reunion after over half a century (a time-span that I believe is longer than the most members here :)) as the article carries (and it does wrong no one: "...It is believed that under the joint efforts from both India and China, the issue will be brought to a satisfactory settlement...")... the humanity story! Thanks.

Spare us your dirty lie. He was not allowed to leave the India. His case was reported by Indian media and BBC.

"It's still not clear whether Mr Wang is a prisoner of war. But he has been denied official Indian documents or citizenship and also been denied permission to travel back. His family says Mr Wang needs a document to exit India."

No need to google. Chinese medias cover it pretty well, especially the fact he has settled in India, married an Indian woman and started his own family. The same subject is well discussed in Chinese online forums, too.

Not as per the news article posted by Global times which is the mouthpiece of CPC if you understand that. Most of non Chinese people don't Chinese local language, so we only know what your English media reports. Anyways a friend has requested for humanity story, so I will refrain from something which might hurt him. Thank you.

I see. However, I don't know how many English readers actually get English news from Chinese media. It is not like people in the rest of the world care what Chinese think. They don't, or they would have learned Chinese. Beside, Chinese media is not the only source of this story.

Sorry but you don't have access to free media. It was the BBC which first broke the news that mentioned ex military man wanted to meet his extended family in China but Chinese government had neglected till this news article, once it came in mainstream media, then only CPC requested Indian government to clear the visit which ?Indian government never rejected . I know its difficult for you people to get any non Chinese free news in side PRC but I hope you get it.

Might be true mate but BBC broke the story if you knew that already.

Chinese soldier Wang Qi will return to China sometime on Saturday, the Indian embassy informed on Friday.

This is not your dim-witted Indian forum, so spare us your BS. Indian media reported he was denied a permit to leave India.

Oh yes kindly go through the links I have posted of multiple links.

Indian government has done the arrangements within months, what took so long for CPC to get military person so many decades to reach Indian government?
